The Worm

She spotted him as she was waiting for the lights to change. He was carefree, non-chalant, spirited even, minding in his own business. Suddenly there was movement...a hump appeared on his back for a few seconds, and then he lay flat again. The brave invertibrate seemed to be planning to cross the road too, and the very thought made the girl smile.
'How cute.' She thought. 'He'll never make it across this busy road though.'
She was petrified of worms, but this little guy was a responsible creature, and if he were a man, she'd date him.
'He deserved to live.' She thought. 'Aaw.'
A neat line of motor vehicles came to a halt at the lights and the familiar beeping sound resounded through the summery air.
"Ice-cream and cake, ice-cream and cake, ice-cream..." She said repeatedly.
With sudden dexterity, the girl snatched up the worm and walked briskly to the other side of the street.
A truck driver who was had pulled up behind the first row of vehicles impatiently honked his horn and the girl jumped in fright.
Looking at the palm of her hand, she wished she'd minded her own business.
