"Good evening Mr. Miller," says the teacher.
"Er, hello," says Mr. Miller clearing his throat.
She sits down and pulls a file out of a box.
"OK Jake, lets see," says the teacher trying to address the child in a
friendly manner. "Jake has been progressing well with his math's," says
the teacher. Jake's father looks unsatisfied.
"How's his English?" Questions Jake's father. The teacher takes a deep
breath. She knows that a parent like Mr. Miller will dwell on what he
calls her faults and not for one minute consider that his sweet little
angel of a son was actually a problem child that couldn't spell the
word English if it hit him in the face.
"I don't think, Mr. Miller, that English is one of Jake's strongest
subjects," says the teacher.
"Well then it's your job to knock it into him, for goodness sakes
anyone would think us hard working citizens pay you for nothing,"
bellows Jake's father.
"Shush Dad," hisses Jake.
Mr. Miller shuffles in his chair. The legs creak uncomfortably.
"With all due respect Mr. Miller, Jake's behaviour problems don't help
us educate him," says the teacher.
"Behaviour problems?" screeches Jake's father. "What sort of a petty
excuse is that?"
Jake stares at his feet.
"I can see we are not getting anywhere Mr. Miller," says the teacher.
"If you want to take more interest in your son's education then you can
arrange to see me at a later date, Goodnight Mr. Miller."
