[Continuing the hymn-for-Sundays series]
Only Christ does not require
the earning of salvation.
Who could merit so acquire
to pay for their redemption?
Other creeds ways choose and name
and rituals suggest
to please, appease, atone – their aim:
vague hopes, so weak at best.
Nothing we could ever do
could pay and make us clean.
God, in love, to me and you
sent Jesus to redeem.
What He wants is we accept,
with gratitude receive,
own His Lordship and repent
and love His laws, believe.
Love, desire to please, obey
flows out from those forgiven.
Helped by Him, live more His way,
anticipating heaven.
