"The Autumn of a Life"
Everyday, he walked by the playground.
He loved the sights and sounds of the children at play;
the running, jumping, swinging and laughter.
Oh! The sweet crispness of their laughter.
They called him Pumpkinhead.
And, he supposed he did sort of look like a pumpkin,
with hollows about his eyes,
and a smile of corn kernel teeth.
And, like the trees shedding their leaves,
he was losing what was left of his hair now.
He laughed to himself along with their laughter,
as he shuffled along;
the November wind swirling colorful leaves about his feet.
He clutched his coat closer about his frame,
feeling his joints ache from the damp air.
And, he knew that winter was not far off.
