There are so many uses for construction paper and it would be almost
impossible to list all of them. Here are a few of the easier activities
to do.
Placemats are fun to make and will last a long time. Take a piece of
construction paper and on one side let your child draw a colorful
picture. On the other side, let your child paste some of his/her
favorite pictures that they have previously cut out of a magazine. When
it's completely dry, laminate with clear self-adhesive shelf paper. The
end result is something that can be used all year round. Placemats also
make great gifts for those out of state loved ones.
Puzzles are a fun way to spend a rainy afternoon indoors. Take a sheet
of construction paper and glue it to a thin piece of cardboard. Let
your child draw a colorful picture on it. Then, let your child cut into
simple shapes. You can also have your child draw the divisions on the
back and then you can cut it out for them. A manilla envelope makes a
great storage item for the completed puzzle. The puzzle can also be
mailed to someone for a wonderful surprise.
Construction paper can be used instead of newspaper for paper mache'
items also. It adds a colorful touch, especially for those too young to
paint.
Cards made from construction paper last for a long time and are very
easy to make. Fold a piece of construction paper in half and then
decorate. You child can glue little pieces of yarn or any kind of
decorations on the outside. Then they can write the message on the
inside. Much better than store bought cards.
Snowflakes are beautiful all year round. Just fold the paper a few
times and cut out some small shapes. Open it and voila! A beautiful
decoration for any holiday. Try spring colors for Easter or bold colors
for a birthday party. Your child will be thrilled that they are helping
to prepare for a special event where everyone will admire their
handiwork.
A few pieces of construction paper folded and stapled on the crease
will make for a wonderful book base. Let your child fill the pages with
a story they love or let them dictate one for you to write down. Then,
let them fill the pages with artwork. A scrapbook, storybook, or wish
book are great ways to spend time with your child.
