Only Then

I sat watching over her. She was dazed, watching squirrels jump from tree to tree, and as they all passed, her gaze settles on the post-apocalyptic sun that shone through the obstruction of the cloud-filled sky.
She was so pretty, the slight orange glow in her tired eyes and the messy bun she always had her hair in.
It was cold but she only wore a t-shirt, idiot. She should know how easy it is for her to get ill, I’ve told her so many times but she never remembers.
The first time I saw her I fell for her, meeting was difficult, but we worked around it. So many adventures and discoveries we’d made together, but last night... we had an argument.
Maybe that’s why she hadn’t slept, I feel really guilty, I only wanted to protect her.
A strong burst of wind ran through her hair as she sat around the edge of the empty park, only occupied by the leaves rolling towards her.
She closed her eyes and lay back on the bench, opening them to look up through the trees. I’m sure she saw me, she must have!
I smiled, jumping down I walked towards her, her eyes fixed on the cover of trees above.
Her gazed moved... through me.
We’d been through so much, yet she ignores that I’m here. Standing right in front of her.
I guess it was only in her dreams that she saw me.
