man.)
How to eat ice cream
"C'mon Billy! Shoot it!" The crowd erupted as Billy Lamb scored another
goal for the Loy Norrix hockey team. In true Billy Lamb fashion, he
waved his stick in the air as his teammates gave him pats on the back
for another wonderful play.
In the beige bleachers adjacent to the ice rink, a man in his
mid-forties named Tom sat in the second row, watching his son on the
rink play defense. Tom's wife was off somewhere-probably chatting with
the other hockey moms. Sitting next to him was a boy, no more than six.
The kid clutched a soft serve chocolate ice cream cone. Every now and
then, he'd take a bite-not a lick, but a full-fledged bite- of the
chocolate ice cream. A teenaged girl, most likely his sister, sat next
to the boy. Tom smiled to himself as he turned to the boy.
"Hey, kid." He whispered. The boy turned his attention away from the
game and toward Tom. "You know how to make that ice cream taste really
good? Go like this." Tom held an imaginary ice cream cone in his left
hand, and thrust the imaginary chocolate ice cream onto his
forehead.
The boy seemed apprehensive. He looked at the game, then his ice
cream, back at the game, at Tom, then once more at his ice cream before
cowering over to his sister. Tom smiled, stood up, and walked to the
snack bar to buy a cup of hot chocolate.
As he walked back with a steaming Styrofoam cup of cocoa in hand, a
shrill scream resonated in the arena.
"Ohmigod! Johnny, what did you do?" No sooner did Tom hear this then
the same boy he'd sat next to run up to him. His name must've been
Johnny, as his ice cream looked flatter and a large smudge of chocolate
ice cream was located on his forehead, centered above a huge smile. The
boy's sister soon appeared as well, grabbing the boy by his hand and
taking him back to his seat while she muttered something along the line
of "how am I supposed to impress Billy now?"
Tom smiled as the words of his wife echoed in his head-"I can't take
you anywhere."
