SECRET JOURNEY
My distant love lies sleeping
Alone on a narrow bed:
Will he hear my soothing whispers,
Feel my fingers stroke his head?
He knows nothing of the journey
I make to him this night,
Soaring high over moonlit hillsides,
Dark woods, and rivers bright.
Should he wake he will not see me -
My form I must leave behind -
For I am as the night-breeze,
Or the shadow on the blind.
"Your love is come, my darling,
To take your pain away;
To kiss your restless eyes;
To banish the cares of today.
For tomorrow will find us together
Until the end of time,
Never again to be parted.
Then you will truly be mine..."
It is as if he hears me!
His face is tranquil now!
Soft, full mouth in quiet smile;
No more a furrowed brow...
I wrap my love around him,
Keeping his devils at bay,
'Til rose light at the window
Beckons yet another day.
A wave of desire sweeps through me -
How I long for my earthly form! -
But with a lingering kiss, a regretful sigh,
I melt into the dawn...
"Good morning, my darling, I love you!"
He calls me later to say,
"I dreamed of you last night,
And I feel so elated today!
My dream was so tender, so real -
I felt you inside my mind;
Your scent was upon the night-breeze,
And your shadow on the blind..."
