City Airport
This island surrounded by manufactured lagoons.
Was a place where employment and commerce boomed.
Warehouses on this mile long strip were so grand,
The most thriving and industrial port in the land.
The South side part of the King George V mooring selection.
North-side part of the Royal Albert Dock collection.
When the docks closed buildings became monthly rented.
By business people who were so very inventive.
However, the day came and a decision had been made
To bulldoze down all buildings and clear the way.
An airport had been decided to take people across seas.
For work or holidays for people just like you and me.
This great airport lies upon old foundations.
Where ships were moored, from many nations.
Dry docks now filled in, where airport terminal is erected.
Many people fought to have those plans rejected.
So, this special piece of land has not yet died.
For this new industry has helped the locals to survive.
And now again, this area has gained world respect.
For you can now fly to foreign places, direct.
When the foundation stone was laid by Prince Charles.
It brought with it happiness, joy and smiles.
In addition, the Dockland Development Board should be praised
For once more the importance of this area has been raised.
