"I Remember
the sun
caressing my body
the sensation of cane crushed under my feet
my senses alive
the fragrance of aromatic spices
making me dizzy with expectation
my mind, like the sea,
never at rest
I make plans
for life
I hear
the hum of the bees
the lullaby of crickets
the spirited songs of my people
driving me on to success
I see
the shimmer of the moon
on a sapphire ocean
she flinches
she is aware
of advancing age
autumn overtook the days of sun
to be sheathed by a wintry haze
the songs of my people are now subdued
her once vibrant body
knows summer is gone
she sits, exhausted
awaiting death
her memory who remains
her one true friend
will recreate summer
