Message in a Bottle

I take it for granted that
you'll always be here
to wrap me in you love

you've been a rock in
times of distress
a crag during drought
a banquet in times of famine
a pillar during doubt

you were my mountain
a shield
protecting me
from harm

Whenever I wavered
nearly slipping
you would gently adjust
my step
not recalling my errors
keeping them
far from your thoughts

you took my hand
led me
through hazardous territory
keeping me safe
showing me I could go
as far
as high
for as long
as I wanted

now you have grown old
physically not the giant
you were from my
ant-like perspective
but you fill me with awe
admiration is what you inspire

Dad I love you
I have been blessed to know you
privileged to be educated
at your feet
and I hope I have brought
joy to your heart

If only I could
store you in a bottle
leaving a message for your progeny
but knowing that your love has spread
now to another generation
will suffice
it has never grown sparse
and will endure
for aeons
