The Angel

An unlikely angel,
No wings of fire, no shining halo,
But an angel all the same.
Our heavenly guardian sent to protect,
And light the stormy path ahead
From a distance he watched, waiting for our cry.
And cry we did,
Pathetic temporal tears,
Enough to repel a mere man.
But an angel's wrath descended, and hence he decreed,
No more pearls shall be wasted and fall in vain,
Nor drops of blood or sweat.
He cloaked us in the stuff of clouds,
And protected us with an angel's watch
pouring unheralded blessings from above.
But then one day our angel took flight,
A shepherd deserting his loyal flock,
Celestial vision and protection gradually waned.
He was down-trodden and unappreciated,
Forever destined for higher things,
And us? - Mere mortals stepping on an angel's wings.
