On the Brink.
Light and darkness lay around. Light so intense that it seemed to
creep into every dark place and insensate corner with intent to murder
every patch of cooling shade and loving shadow. Darkness, cold yet
welcoming, with promise of absolute calm within its icy breast.
Adam stood between, the dark in front and the light behind. Snatches of
speech emerged from the ether, half-heard exclamations of phrases
unfamiliar.
The voices stopped, their chatter silenced. Falling agonisingly slowly
into the dark, Adam caught three final words that he understood before
the silence engulfed him with its quiet melodies:
"Time of death?"
