With Expectations Far Too High

With expectations far too high,
And ignorance to darkened sky,
I walked, if there was not a care,
With beauty drowning everywhere.
The trail brought forth a steady stride,
I stopped, my worried thoughts to hide,
Could not escape the plains before,
The rain began to pour...
Said I, "To whom I owe this fate?
In distance, see the city gates,
Beyond, I have no enemies,"
But then a voice called out to me:
"Your judgement day has come," it said,
"All those who you, in past, misled,
Turned them back, away from me,
No pity for this will come to thee."
Conviction never stabbed my heart,
For I had spent many years apart,
The only thing I held inside,
Was bitter, selfish pride.
Never thought to plead for grace,
Tears did not light upon my face,
The voice's owner struck me down,
As I bled, I made no frightening sound,
I laid there tired, until I died,
With expectations far too high.
