DOWN WITH ABSOLUTE DEMOCRACY (different version)

Half the world has gone utterly mad,
forgetting reason and history,
to follow this new fangled fad
of giving every animal in the jungle equality

The lazy man who's never read a book
has the same say as the industrious scholar;
the foolish woman who's her children forsook
marks the same ballot as the devoted mother

Remembering the myriad crimes of tyrants,
so many embrace the opposite madness
escaping from eons of withering heat
to chatter in a freezing modern abyss

For as every schoolchild knows,
no-one applies themselves
where little profit or distinction follows:
the same meal given to giants and elves

But this applies not just to communism
(which was mostly veneer)
but equally in lands like here,
where the barbaric dollar is king
and from every hillside commercials ring

Do the poor benefit from absolute democracy?
Moguls and demagogues pull their votes
like puppets on strings,
playing to their superstitious ignorance
with great hypocrisy

But don't think I advocate
a return to rule by an oligarchic few,
a forsaking of all liberal progress,
or a return to the worldview
of some draconian date...
neither an authoritarian state
of "socialistic" bliss

No, the common folk should have a say,
every gas-pumper should some vote enjoy,
but I tell you:

tomorrow will be worse than today
should the reins of power
continue as Everyman's toy
