Like A Story

She’d said no
But he didn’t stop
Everything had been in place
Like a story almost
Full Miami moon, palm fronds
Swaying gently in the breeze
Blowing from the south where small
But lovely Key West lay
That perfect March temperature
Which is neither warm nor cool but
Deliciously makes one’s skin
Breathe, maybe smile
Freshly mowed grass in the public
Park with stones painted white
The awesome sound of waves
God’s rhythm
Hitting the sandy beach that night
About half a block from where they’d
Made love in the car
Not for the first time
Her soft body desiring what her voice
Had said it didn’t
They’d married in the terrible heat
Of August
Welcomed a baby son into the world
That December
Proud parents they had become
The son would one day achieve fame in sports
Alongside his many colleagues whose
Last names were Aaron, Campanella,
Cobb, Gehrig, Mantle, and Robinson—
Just to name a few.
