Why did he do it?
Sure as hell, not for queen, or country.
He did it because his dad got rat-arsed every night;
came home drunk – hit his mum, him, and
his little brother, once too often.
Because he couldn’t wait to leave school.
Because he lived in a dead-end street
off Central Drive;
all of them smack-heads hanging around...
too many back alleyways reeking of ass.
Because his big brother had.
Because his nan died, and his old Staffie.
Because he’d split up with his girlfriend.
Because the ad looked cool on TV.
Because he was sixteen...
Because he didn’t know, the fuck, what else to do.
Because he never dreamed, he’d be telling his own kid,
one day, for Christ’s sake...Please, don’t you do it,
too.

I guess that's the reason

I guess that's the reason they've always done it and there's people all too willing and able to exploit that? It reminds me of people I've known and I can just imagine them with the last line too. It's different to your other poems I've read but just as well-written in a different way - all the becauses are like punches - and sadly true.

Good as ever Tina.
