Habitual Intruder

the soul was eager
but his flesh was so weak
tragedy was unfolding in his life
that of which he didn't speak
he kept to himself...
to the habit he would retreat
he was only a temporary resident
living with the beast...he couldn't defeat
his soul was waning
as he felt the burning in his veins...
"this is how i choose to live" he thinks
as he sits and feels this joyous pain...
lurking in the shadows
the intruder smiles an evil grin
it sits and waits patiently
knowing it's a battle he cannot win
he didn't want to admit it...
he'd seen his best days pass him by
remembering all the good times he had
now he only sees them in his mind's eye
we never left him, no
we were always there,
but alone he would sit
and alone he would stare
yes, eyes open and fixed
at the walls in his home...
they were the only thing that would
listen to him when he felt alone
he seemed to win the battles
but he could never win the war,
this evil seemed to stay with him
it was the only thing he ever adored
his face is so empty
now his flesh is very weak
the enemy has overtaken him...
of his memory we can only speak
