Dearly Beloved

Dearly beloved,
We are gathered here today to mourn the loss of a relationship of two people who were very much, at one time, in love.
The cause of death is uncertain, for it happened slowly, systemically, yet all at once.
In the beginning there was an undeniable connection. An unmistakeable chemistry.
They were devoted to each other. Addicted, even. They couldn't get enough of one another.
Every moment was precious. So much so, in fact, that even the promise of a new dawn was enough to sustain the fiery embers of passion in their hearts.
But then one day, one week, one month, something changed. And the fire started to die down.
And the lovers started to grow jealous, restless, careless. And soon the flame dwindled down to nothing but synthetic ash.
And the place they thought would bring new life
Was the place where their love went to die.
So I ask you, dearly beloved,
Did love truly exist in that place?
Or was it just an illusion
Made to mimic trust, time and space.
