DIARY SECRETS
That was where she would find Thomas. She was now certain.
She turned, thrust the diary into her pocket and with quick, determined
steps, hurried from the room, and the house in the same manner.
She walked down the street and to the riverbank. She knew it was
dangerous down there amongst the rocks, and one slip would be
sufficient for a serious accident.
He was supposed to be in school, but from reading the diary, she had
come to learn he hadn't been there for a few weeks and knew he had his
mother fooled.
Those friends he had mixed with were a bad influence. He was a good boy
before moving here. She was proud of him and thought nothing would
distract his concentration from school work.
How wrong she could have been.
By the river, she crossed the open-sided bridge as she looked over to
witness Thomas play froggy by jumping on the rocks which got futher
apart the more he continued. His mother heard his friends cheer.
Running across the bridge, she shouted, 'Thomas, get from there,'
Looking when he was about to jump, he remained on the stone.
His friends looked, 'Mammy dearest has come to take home Tommy.'
Running down the muddy side verge, she slipped and went the rest of the
way on her bum.
All the boys looked as Thomas shouted, 'Mam.' As he witnessed her
slide, he quickly jumped back across the stones to get to her.
She hit the water.
Thomas sprinted two stones before he slipped.
'Bloody hell,' one of the boys shouted as he stood. Taking off his
jumper, the boy made his way to the water to rescue Thomas.
'No, get my mother,' Thomas shouted. 'I am okay.' He flapped his arms
wildly around him, but was afloat.
His friend went under to see where his mother was.
A while under, he dragged his mother from the water, laying her on the
riverbank, starting to give her mouth to mouth.
'If I hadn't been so bloody stupid to skip school, mam would be
alright,' Thomas cried as he watched, helpless.
The boy continued with his lifesaving, but it was doing no use.
Thomas watched the third boy laugh as he pulled the cigarette from his
mouth. 'You think that is funny,' Thomas was annoyed. 'That stuff is
funny,' he pointed to the joint. 'That should have been me, not my
mother.'
'Have a drag,' the third boy didn't care.
'No! I don't want to touch that ever again.' He watched as his mother
coughed and opened her eyes. 'Mam, I am sorry,' he deeply
apologised.
'Don't worry about that, telephone for an ambulance,' the second boy
shouted.
Doing what was asked, he went.
