I lit up a cigarette and watched the amber highlight her features. I told her that everything is going to be okay but it didn’t seem to remedy her much. She’s still as tense in my arms, tenser than usual. I felt at loss on what to do, she’s just gonna have to live with this as much as I have to. Or at least for the moment.
I took a drag from my cigarette as she shook her head, “What’s wrong?” I asked.
“Nothing, it’s fine.” She said. She’s almost as good of a liar as I am.
“I told you I have everything under control.” I reaffirmed harshly. I wish she’d actually listened to me for once.
“You promise?” She asked in the sweetest tone, ringing through my ears.
My heart began to race, I hoped she wouldn’t notice. “I promise, sweetheart, just go to sleep. Okay? Did you take your meds?” She was quite the scatterbrain.
“Yes, I did. I took them about an hour ago.” She quietly mused.
