Strong Old Oak
Come.
Step into the pages of my mind.
Please.
Take the time to read.
What is etched on the trunk of
My Family Tree.
Sense
The freedom in the sun of
Our ancestral homelands, and
The good earth where I trod.
With disdain,
Feel the weight of
The manacles and shackles I 've bore.
Flinch
From the whip,
I've felt.
Wrap yourself
within the desire and the yearning for
A land and family.
You'll never see, again.
Search
with me for
The friendly face and warm eyes.
I could never find.
Work
with me in the sun scorched fields.
From dusk to dawn on land
I could never own.
Run,
with me in the mid of night.
In fear, but with
Courage to be my own person.
Watch me,
Grow like a sapling tree, standing tall,
and spreading my branches.
Times have changed,
So, when you see me, and
my children, and their children,
Know that they came from
A Strong Old Oak.
