Carp
The main type of carp that are found around Britain are called common
carp. The other main carp found in Britain are leather and mirror carp.
The most common carp have deep and broad bodies with brown backs. These
fish can reach high speeds and they are hard fighters. They also have
deep brown and yellow flanks.
There are other species of carp found in Britain like the grass carp
and the crucion carp. The grass carp originally came from eastern China
and Russia and was brought to Britain to control the weed growth in the
1970's. These don't grow as big as the other carp but they are still a
delightful fish to catch.
The adult carp are always rooting around the bottom of the water.
Snails, bloodworms, shrimps, crayfish and mussels are safe from the
digging of carp. Carp also feed in mid water and on the surface. They
have been known to eat other fish. The carp fry feed on plankton and
water flies.
