Of Infinite Years To Me

I am watching you now as you lie there
breathing and dreaming your wise years away.
I am but a fraction of your life
and yet a whole lifetime in your eyes.
I remember how you cradled me as a child.
I remember the arguements,
the days of slamming doors and the yelling
and the crying.
I tried and tried to knock you down
with my feeble childish behaviour
and yet you remained as always
a tower of strength.
I never tell you this, but I often think of you
lying there sleeping.
I wonder what you are thinking.
Perhaps in your dreams you are watching me,
knowing of what I have yet to come,
the things you cannot shield.
I sit and admire you,
content upon each breath you take,
tracing your laughter lines with my eyes.
I cannot challenge you for who you are,
criticise your mistakes or mock your achievements,
I cannot question the way you love me,
Because you are of infinite years to me.
