When Heaven Comes Calling

For Starters:
Sometimes I gaze up into the heavens over the city sky and imagine myself falling into the clouds. Up there it looks so warm and peaceful which is the complete opposite case where I'm from. I'm from the struggle. I have just enough money to be poor and am surrounded by evil in the flesh of humans. I've been told that when I die, I'm going to heaven. But when your name is me, you doubt that God will accept you. I know that I want to go to heaven when I pass away; but not knowing if God will accept me only strengthens my fear of dying.
-Mr. Nobody
Chapter 1
"Open em up! shouted the grungy-faced security guard from the watch tower. The electric gates to the John Morrison County Prison hissed loudly then slowly began to slide apart from each other.
"See ya soon, boy, spat a fat security guard, stepping out of his booth. Kyree paid the guard no mind as he walked through the prison gates and back into the free world. He took a moment to take a deep breath of fresh air and thank God for freeing him once again. Three straight years in a cage will make a nigga change his foolish ways indefinitely. With a bag in his hand and a wife beater on his back, Kyree began the long walk to the nearest bus stop. Kyree was a good-looking young man. He had vibrant dark skin and slim braids which hung down to his shoulders. His face strongly resembled his fathers, having shy dimples and thick lips. Niggas in the bricks often referred to Kyree as that pretty nigga because even on the inside he groomed himself from head to toe. Kyree didn't consider himself a pretty boy, he just wasn't with looking a good mess no matter what the circumstances were. What seemed to be an hour later, Kyree finally arrived at the 121 bust stop which would take him into the city. Sitting there for nearly half an hour, Kyree began to wonder if the bus even came to this stop anymore. It was fairly distant from everything but the prison so it normally wasn't busy at all. Several more minutes past and a bus hadn't made itself visual yet. Fuck it Kyree thought to himself. Just as he stood to start walking towards town, a green Honda came speeding down the long dirt road towards Kyree's direction. The driver smashed on the breaks and came to a screeching stop a few feet in front of him. When the driver side window dropped down, a warm feeling quickly took over Kyree's body.
"What's good, Kyree? asked a pretty light-skinned woman behind the steering wheel. Kyree didn't answer the young lady. He stood stiffly, staring at her with a dumb smile on his face. "Hellooo, can you here me? What, your name's not Kyree anymore? Who are you, Kyra now? That was definitely one thing Kyree missed about Roslyn; her wonderful silly side.
"You waited for me? Kyree asked.
"Why wouldn't I? Roslyn replied, hopping out of the car, "It was only three measly years, right? Kyree couldn't fight back the tears as he and Roslyn embraced in a long passionate hug. There probably wasn't a girl in the world that would wait three years for their man to get out of jail and be there to scoop him up when they let him out. Roslyn was definitely one of a kind.
"Did you miss me? Kyree asked, palming Roslyn's juicy round ass with both hands.
"You know I missed you, pa, she replied, kissing her man on the lips. "Come on, let's get you home. Kyree raised his eyebrow, staring at Roslyn like she was crazy.
"Roslyn, what home are you talkin' about? As far as I know, I'm homeless.
"Chill, daddy. I already talked to my mama about letting you stay with us for a while until you get back on your feet. It was a long shot but she finally agreed to it. Now come on. Kyree smiled to himself as he walked around the car and sunk into the passenger's seat. He really didn't like Roslyn's mother because she disapproved of her daughter dating a thug, but living in her house would have to do for now. Besides, he was a changed man. His days of hustling in the streets were over. Roslyn made a sharp U-turn and sped off back down the road. While she took her R.Kelly CD out and put in her Bobby Valentino, Kyree took a few moments to admire his better half. Roslyn had radiant olive-colored skin and long black hair which hung to the middle of her back. Though her body was athletic, Roslyn still had lady lumps where it mattered most. Roslyn wasn't gorgeous in the face, but she was still cute-as-hell. Most bitches in the hood secretly envied her for looking better than them.
"Why you lookin' at me like that, Ky? Roslyn asked, noticing her man's silly grin.
"You just look even better than you did before I went away, that's all. Roslyn blushed shyly.
"Thanks, papi. But speaking of you going away, that was your second strike, Kyree. If you start workin' these streets again then”
"Shhhh, Kyree whispered, placing a finger over Roslyn thick pink lips, "trust me, Roslyn, I did a lot of growing up while I was locked away. I hate prison but I must admit that it can change a nigga for the better. I'm twenty-four now, Roz. I ain't got time for the dumb shit anymore.
"I hope you're not just talkin' out of your ass, Kyree.
"I'm not, ma. God's dealt me a tough hand but I'm learning how to cope with it. No one ever said life's journey would be easy so I would be a fool to complain about it, right?
"Wow, said Roslyn, shocked. "I guess being locked up for a second time did change you. I haven't heard anything that smart come out of your mouth for as long as I've known you.
"Get the fuck outta here, Kyree joked, flipping down the sun visor to look at himself in the mirror. Roslyn laughed.
"You know I was just playing, baby. I'm just glad to see you, that's all.
"I'm glad to see you too, Kyree replied.
"But I swear, Kyree, if you leave me again¦
"I promise you that I wont, okay? It took a moment for Roslyn to reply.
"Okay, Ky. Roslyn kissed her man on the lips once more and the two continued to speed off towards the city.
"I know you ain't been fuckin' wit nobody while I was in the bricks, right? questioned Kyree out of nowhere. Roslyn was so excited about seeing her man that she forgot to prepare herself for that question. "Roslyn, I know you hear me? Have you been fuckin' wit somebody else?
"Not¦really, she answered, almost sounding unsure of herself.
"What the fuck does not really mean?
"Damn, Ky, we were just having a Kodak moment, why you always gotta fuck shit up?
"I ain't fuckin' up nothin', Roslyn, shot Kyree, "I'm just making sure you've been on your act-right. Now what the hell does not really mean? Roslyn just sighed. "You been fuckin' somebody, Roslyn?
"Look, Ky, I had been talkin' to this nigga named Maurice for a while but it wasn't anything serious. We were just cool peoples. But I let him know that I had a man and you were gettin' out today, okay?
"Did he fuck? Roslyn looked at Kyree as if she were shocked that he would ask her that. "Don't look at me like that! Did this nigga climb in yo pussy?
"Damn, Kyree! Why do you have to talk about me like that? I'm supposed to be your woman, not one of your little hoes.
"I can tell by how you're stalling that you let this nigga fuck so I'ma just dismiss you from my thoughts right now.
"Believe whatever you want, Roslyn said in a trembling voice. Kyree could see a tear sliding down her cheek out the corner of his eye. He knew he was probably in the wrong for calling her out like that but that's just how men were. Men are jealous creatures who can't stand the thought of some other nigga being inside of their girl. Even when a man fucks up he expects his woman to be behind him one-hundred percent like he never did anything wrong to begin with. Kyree just decided to let the situation go for now and slumped back in his seat to rest his eyes. He was tired and couldn't wait to take a hot shower and jump in bed. The car ride was quiet for a good ten minutes before Roslyn spoke up.
"I have something to tell you, Kyree.
"I'm sure it can wait, Roz.
"It's kind of important. I think you would want to know now.
"I don't want to hear about you fuckin' this Maurice nigga, Roz. We'll deal with that later.
"Kyree! Roslyn shouted in anger. "This ain't got shit to do with anybody but us!
"What the hell is it Roslyn?
"Why do you have to be so mean to me?
"Roslyn, what the hell is it!
"You have a son! Kyree's jaw dropped to the floor, his stomach right behind it. That was definitely not what he was expecting her to say. Kyree sat up in his seat and took a few seconds to gather himself.
"I have a what?
"You have a son, Ky.
"Roslyn I know you didn't want to come see me in prison because you didn't want to see me locked up like that, but damn! You couldn't come to tell me that? That's some serious shit!
"I know, Kyree. I'm sorry.
"You couldn't tell me in one of the letters you sent me? I mean, damn, Roslyn!
"I just didn't want you feeling even worse for being locked up then you already did. If you knew you had a son but couldn't see him, you would go crazy and you know it. Kyree didn't want to admit it, but Roslyn was right. Knowing he had a child but couldn't see it because of the stupid decisions he had made in life would've hurt him deeply. Kyree took a deep breath and ran his hand across his braids. Right then it struck him. He was no longer a boy, but a man with a family. Kyree didn't plan on settling down so soon, but fuck it. He couldn't say that he was unhappy about the situation. He had a loving girlfriend and a little him running around. He knew that God had a plan for him; a plan to rid him from the streets and give him a fresh start on life. "Well? said Roslyn, "Is that a bad thing?
"Bad? Kyree shouted, bewildered, "baby, we're a family! The worried look on Roslyn's face quickly turned into a smile when she saw that Kyree was cool with the situation. Kyree reached over and threw his arms around his boo, almost causing her to loose control of the car and run off the road in the process.
"Damn, Ky!
"My fault, ma. I'm just¦excited, you know? Roslyn smiled.
"Well I'm glad you took the news so well, baby.
"How did you expect me to take it? Roslyn just shrugged her shoulders.
"Roslyn, listen to me. I love you with all my heart and would do anything for you, okay? And nothing in this world would make me leave you. You hear me?
"I hear you, Kyree. But I must say that's it's hard to believe you.
"God! shouted Kyree, throwing his hands up in the air. "I swear I don't understand you women. A nigga tells you exactly what you want to hear yet you still want to continue with the drama. Do you like me being mad at you or something?
"Oh, so you only told me that because you knew I wanted to hear it? See, I knew you didn't give a fuck about me, Kyree.
"Oh, shut up! Just drive, woman, drive! Take me to my son! The two went on arguing back the fourth for the rest of the ride. One second they would be all in love with each other and the very next they would be trying to rip each other's head's off. That's just how their relationship was and had been for four years.
******
Roslyn pulled her Honda up in front of her mother's house in West County. Kyree jumped out of the car and stretched every single limb on his body. The ride had been long and agitating and all he wanted to do was see his son.
"Ky, please try to get along with my mother, okay? Roslyn begged, kissing her man on the lips.
"Ain't like I'ma try to piss her off. Hell, if she kicks me out I won't have any damn where to go. Roslyn giggled.
"Exactly, so be good. After sharing one more kiss, the two walked up the sidewalk and to Roslyn's front door. When they walked inside, Janice, Roslyn's mother, was sitting on the couch watching the people's court. Janice was an aging woman but she still looked good. She had yellow radiant skin just like Roslyn's and salt and pepper hair that she kept rolled up in a bun.
"Hey, mama, said Roslyn, tossing her keys on the mail table.
"Hey, baby, Janice replied, keeping her eyes on the television. "Is that Kyree you got with you?
"Yes, mama. I told you this morning I was goin' to pick him up.
"Mmhm mumbled Janice, "Come here, Kyree. Kyree shrugged his shoulders at Roslyn then walked over and stood beside Janice. For the first time, Janice took her eyes off the TV and scrolled them up and down Kyree's athletic frame. "I told my daughter it was fine if you stayed here for a while but understand that if you're gonna stay here then you're gonna work.
"Yes, ma'am, I intended too, Kyree replied.
"And once you make enough money then it's off you go. Kyree just nodded at Janice. He was thankful for her allowing him to stay in her house but damn, she could have hidden her hatred for him a little better. "And one more thing, Kyree.
"Ma'am?
"Don't bring any of that street shit around here, ya here? No drugs, no alcohol, none of your homies, none of that, ya here?
"Yes, ma'am. Janice flashed Kyree a half smile and dismissed him with her eyes. Kyree bit his bottom lip then turned around to face Roslyn who was motioning for him to follow her up the stairs. In Janice's eyes, Kyree was very lucky. If it wasn't for her granddaughter thinking highly of him, Kyree's black ass would be out on the streets again, poisoning the very minds that would soon be expected to run this country when the present generation was dead and gone. In a way, Janice felt sorry for the generation following hers. With all of the young polluted minds, corrupted by drugs, hip hop music, and sex, there was no way that the country would be run properly and in an orderly manner. There would be hell on earth soon and Janice was glad that she wouldn't be around to see it. Roslyn quietly led Kyree into her bedroom. The room was exactly how Kyree remembered it. The walls were a hot-pink and covered with posters of Ludacris, Ice Cube, Tizzle Fizz, and Twista. Kyree's heart melted when he noticed a little hump under Roslyn's bed covers. A lone tear fell from his eye as he walked over to the bed and slightly pulled back the sheets. Soundly asleep was his little man. Boy, was he tall for a two-year-old. Little Darent had a soft brown face just like his daddy. Kyree smiled like the proud father that he was. He thanked God for keeping his little man safe while he was locked down. Kyree gently ran a finger across Darent's cheek with tears in his eyes. Right then, he made a promise to himself that from now on, he would always be there for his son and would never let anyone or anything bring harm to him. Darent was now his responsibility and by all means he would take care of him. It was gonna be somethin' to hear a young'n call him daddy. Roslyn took a seat on the bed next to Kyree and held his hand. Kyree turned and kissed Roslyn softly on the lips, and thanked her silently for giving him a little boy. The two lovers held each other closely until they quietly fell asleep. This was the safest that Roslyn had felt for years.
Chapter 2
The glare of the sun through the window blinds played across Kyree's eyes until he awakened. His mouth was dry and his eyes burned like hell. It didn't take him long to realize that he had slept straight through all of yesterday and last night as well. Kyree sat up in the bed and noticed that he was in Roslyn's room alone. Where the hell did they go? He thought to himself, making his way into the hallway then to the bathroom. Kyree flopped down on the toilet seat and handled some well-overdue business. Taking a deep breath, he began to think about places he could go to apply for some jobs. He needed to make good money and he needed to make it fast, but as for right now, anything that paid would work. Kyree's one and only mission was to instill a well-paying job in order to give his family everything they needed. Roslyn had her job down at the record store, but she was trying to juggle school, work, and taking care of Darent all at the same time and Kyree knew that it was terribly stressful on her. Kyree was the man now and it was up to him to make sure that his family would never struggle to survive. Finishing up his business, Kyree jumped into the shower and scrubbed his tired body down to the bone. It felt good to shower and not have to worry about dropping the soap. When he was done, he wrapped himself in a towel and tiptoed back to Roslyn's room. Pushing the bedroom door open, Kyree spotted Roslyn standing in the back of the room ironing a pair of jeans.
"Good afternoon, sleepy head! she shouted, ecstatic to see her man.
"Hey, baby. Where were you? Kyree asked.
"I was at work. Right now I'm on my lunch break so I decided to drop by Big Mike's and pick you up somethin' to wear. Kyree smiled widely as he walked over to his woman. Already, she was looking out for him and that was just one of the many reasons that he loved her.
"Thanks, baby. I was surely about to come in here and put on a blouse and one of your thongs.
"You're so silly, Roslyn chuckled.
"Where's my little man?
"At daycare. When he woke up yesterday morning and saw you lying next to him, he almost went upside your head with a power ranger.
"A power ranger? Kyree asked.
"He's not used to you yet, duh. But don't worry, baby. Soon he'll be calling you daddy while you two toss around a football outside. Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday he goes to daycare. Every other day, mama watches him. Just so you know.
"That's coo, said Kyree, wrapping his arms around Roslyn's waist from behind.
"I like them jeans, Roslyn.
"I thought you would, she replied, ironing the last wrinkle out of Kyree's pants.
"No those jeans, ma he said looking down at her big booty, "I'm talkin' about the jeans you got on. With a sexy grin on her face, Roslyn spun around and wrapped her arms around Kyree's neck. .
"I missed you, baby, she said, planting several kisses on his lips.
"I missed you too, baby, Kyree whispered, "and I love you as well. Roslyn began to moan softly as her man caressed her ass and thighs. It had been three long years since she last felt his touch and she needed it badly. Roslyn loosened Kyree's towel and let It fall freely to the ground. His naked hard body turned her on to a point of no return as he pressed it against her and slid his tongue into her mouth. Seconds later, the two were sprawled out on the bed making passionate love. Roslyn wasn't even completely undressed yet when Kyree shoved himself inside of her. Roslyn was tight¦but not as tight as she should have been. This angered Kyree but he would deal with that later. Roslyn grinded her hips up and down while Kyree lay on top of her, matching her movements. She reached above her head and pulled on the bed sheets while Kyree took his stroke deeper and deeper.
"Do you like it? Kyree whispered into Roslyn's ear.
"Ooh, I love it baby, she whispered back, "but, baby, I have to go. I have to get back to work.
"No you don't, Kyree moaned, sliding his tongue across her lips.
"Yes I do, baby. I can't afford to loose this job. Roslyn began to moan even louder, grinding her hips harder to Kyree's rhythm. "Ooh, daddy, please let me go? The last thing Kyree wanted to do was stop fuckin' without bustin' his nut. It had been three years since he last felt pussy and he needed it badly. But Roslyn was right. She couldn't afford to loose her job. They couldn't afford her to loose her job. Kyree sighed angrily as he pulled out and rolled off of Roslyn.
"Shit! You done fucked up my jeans, Roslyn shouted, running to her dresser to grab a fresh pair.
"My fault, Kyree said half-heartedly. Roslyn kicked her foot out of the pair of jeans she had on then slipped into the fresh pair.
"Oh, Kyree, I forgot to tell you. When I pulled up, Riley was outside waiting for you. He told me to tell you to come out and see him when you got outta the shower.
"My nigga Riley's outside? Kyree asked, sitting up on the bed.
"That's what I just said, buddy.
"Well, damn, Roz, why didn't you tell me!? Kyree jumped out of the bed and slid into the Phat Farm shirt and pair of jeans that Roslyn picked up for him.
"Because he told me there was no rush. He was about to kick back and smoke a blunt anyways. Kyree darted down the steps and shot outside to greet his boy. Sitting in a white Chevy Blazer in front of the house was the man they called Riley. Kyree and Riley went back like a muthafucca. They had been close to best friends since the third grade. Riley was a young brown-skinned nigga with fresh curly hair. He had a slim build and stood about six-foot-two. His baby face gave off the impression that he was an innocent, nice young man. Little did most people know, Riley could be a demon in the flesh when he wanted to.
"Get the fuck out the car, pretty nigga! shouted Kyree, approaching Riley's window. Riley blew a ring of smoke out his mouth while flipping Kyree the finger.
"Yeah, right, said Kyree, "Fuck ya moms, potna!
Riley jumped out of the car and the two friends embraced in a manly hug.
"Wassup, Ky? How that free life be feelin'?
"It feels good, man. I can't complain at all. How you been, my nigga?
"Shit, just been chillin', said Riley, "chasing this paper like usual.
"That's all you do is chase paper. You still fuckin' wit Kingdom?
"What can I say? said Riley, shrugging his shoulders, "that nigga pays my bills. Kyree just shook his head. He would discuss that situation with his boy later. As of right now he just wanted to catch up on all the time they had missed together.
"So how are you and ya babymoms?
"Man, sighed, Riley, blowing smoke from his mouth, "Me and Tasha broke up about two months ago.
"Are you serious? What happened this time?
"Man, you know I got trust issues. Something was telling me that she was fuckin' around on me and I always trust my instincts.
"You one insecure muthafucca, Riley, Kyree said, shaking his head back and fourth.
"Hell, I know it. Anyways, what was your reaction when you found out that you had a little man? Kyree sprung forward and sucker punched Riley in his chest.
"You knew I had a kid and didn't tell me shit either!? Kyree shouted.
"Ease the fuck back, Ky. Me and Roslyn don't talk on a regular basis. I didn't even know that was your kid until a few months ago, Riley lied, "she made me solemnly swear not to tell you anything about it. You my man, but I respected her wishes. That was something you and ya boo needed to talk about together.
"Fuck all that moral shit, you should have told me, Kyree barked.
"Whateva, nigga, said Riley, waving Kyree off, "If shorty wanted to tell you face to face then that's what was gonna go down. Anyways, how does it feel to be a daddy?
"It feels good, man. I mean¦after I got over the initial shock that I wasn't just somebody's nigga anymore, but somebody's father, I was kind of excited about it.
"Yea, you got you a little family now, Ky. No more creepin' with them ho's after the club!
"Fuck you, Riley, spat Kyree, "I never crept on Roslyn. You know that's my boo.
"Whatever you say, Ky, Riley replied, "anyways, what you got planned for the day?
"Shit, I was just gonna go look for a job. I gotta get back on my feet, baby.
"Son, it's like 2:30 in the afternoon. You a little late to start job hunting, aren't you?
"Hell, I gotta try. Nigga, I'm broke as a joke.
"What about all that cash you stacked workin' for Kingdom? I know you ain't blow all that shit? Kyree sighed and just shook his head.
"I'll talk to you about that shit later.
"Take a ride wit me, Ky, said Riley walking back to the curb.
"Where are we goin'?
"Just take a ride wit me, baby. Kyree sighed and weighed his options. He could hop on the bus and go fill out applications which would take all day, or take a ride with his boy who he hadn't seen in years. Fuck it. Job hunting could wait until tomorrow. Like Riley said, it was a little late to start searching for anything anyways. Job hunting's something you're supposed to start doing early in the morning in order to be taken seriously. At least that's what Kyree told himself.
"Ight, Riley. Let me go tell my boo that I'm out.
"No need, said Roslyn, coming out of the house and locking the front door behind her, "you just be good, Ky, you hear me?
"Yes, baby, Kyree answered, wrapping his arms around her waist as she strolled into his body. Roslyn planted a few juicy kisses on her man's lips before breaking his grasp.
"That goes for you too Riley, she said, punching him in the arm as she walked past.
"I'm always good, Roz, he replied.
"That ain't what I heard.
"What did you here? Roslyn turned to smile at Riley then flopped down into her Honda. "Roz, what these ho's been telling you about me?
"Byeee, Rileyyy, sang Roslyn putting her car in drive, "and I'll see you later, boo!
"Be safe, ma, Kyree replied. The two watched Roslyn take off down the block then got inside of Riley's truck.
"Nigga, tell me where we're goin', Kyree demanded. Riley paid Kyree no attention as he cranked up the music and peeled off down the road.
******
Riley pulled up to the corner of 55th and Clayton and swung the car into a vacant parking lot behind an abandoned building.
"What the hell are we doing here? Kyree asked, unfamiliar with his surroundings.
"Just follow me, Riley replied.
"You better not be tryna get my in no bullshit, nigga.
"Kyree, I wouldn't do that. Just come on. Kyree shrugged his shoulders and followed Riley down a flight of steps and through a long dark corridor under the building. At the end of the corridor was a large medal door lit by a flickering light mounted to the left against the brick wall. When Kyree's vision came to focus, he saw the outline of a man holding a large weapon standing beside the metal door.
"Da fuck is that? Kyree asked, beginning to feel uncomfortable with the whole situation.
"That's just security, my nigga. Don't act like you forgot how the hood be.
"What's good, Ike? Riley asked the large man as he and Kyree approached the metal door.
"Sup, Riley, Ike said in a deep, thunderous voice, "who's this nigga you got with you?
"Nigga? Kyree questioned.
"Chill, Ky. Ike, this is my nigga Kyree; the man I was always talkin' about who just got out of prison.
"Oh, alright, Ike said letting down his guard. Ike dropped his shotgun down to his leg and entered a four-digit code on a small device mounted on the wall next to the door. Seconds later, the door hissed and unlocked itself. Riley motioned for Kyree to follow him inside. Ike grilled Kyree as he walked past him.
"What nigga? Kyree shot, "ain't nothin' Tina about me, muthafucca,
"Fuck you, nigga, Ike fired. When Kyree entered the room, he noticed a familiar face looking at him from behind a desk, but couldn't pinpoint a name.
"Well, don't act like you don't know a muthafucca, said the wide-bodied man, standing from his office chair. The face might have been unrecognizable at the moment, but those dark eyes could never be forgotten.
"Kingdom? Kyree asked in disbelief.
"In the muthafuccin' flesh, baby. Kingdom's appearance had changed dramatically. Before Kyree went to prison on his second strike, Kingdom was a tall hansom man with a cut body and long silky hair. Now he looked somewhat like a beast, having a monstrous frame and an ugly face. His head was bald and wrinkled and his face was riddled with scars. His chest and arms were bulging with muscles making him look like the world's strongest black muthafucca. "Well don't just stand there, Kyree. Come give a nigga some love.
"Why didn't you tell me you were taking me to see Kingdom? Kyree asked, shooting Riley an angry stare. Riley just shrugged his shoulders.
"Orders, homie, orders. I know you can respect that.
"What? said Kingdom acting as if he were hurt, "Are you not happy to see me, Ky? Kyree just chucked to himself.
"Look, Kingdom, I gotta lot of love for you and respect you highly. But if you wanted to see me so you can put me back in the streets, then I'm sorry, but that's not gonna happen.
"Oh, Kyree, Kingdom sighed, shaking his head, "you should know me better then that. Not only were we business partners, but we were family as well. After what you did for me, I would never try to force your hand to do anything else. Kyree looked at his feet and sighed deeply.
"My fault, Kingdom. My head's just been spinning lately. I'm under a lot of pressure, you know?
"Sit down, my boy, said Kingdom, motioning for Riley to get him a drink, "I just wanted to thank you personally for the favor.
"It was nothin', Kingdom. Like you said¦we were family. The streets needed you more than they needed me. Kingdom nodded his head.
"As a token of my appreciation, I would like to invite you to a party tonight. You know¦just a little something to celebrate your freedom.
"That sounds real coo, Kingdom, but¦I don't think I'll be able to make it.
"Why not, Ky? Kingdom asked, folding his hands on his desk.
"Well, I just found out that I had a son yesterday and I want to spend all the time that I can gettin' to know him. I'm sure you can understand? Kingdom sighed.
"Well I really planned on you being there, but I understand where you're coming from. But you were one of my best men, Ky. Don't you feel the least bit obligated to allow your former employees to acknowledge you at the party tonight?
"Not really, Kingdom. You know I got love for everybody in the Famz, but I did a lot of thinking in the bricks. The streets aren't for me anymore. I have two strikes and a close federal eye on me. I took a charge that could have put you in prison for the rest of you're life and all I'm asking in return is for you to allow me to drop out of the game without incident. Kingdom had to admit that he was shocked by Kyree's courage. Kyree was always a fearless man yet always showed respect where respect was due. That's one reason why he liked Kyree so much. After a few moments of awkward silence Kingdom finally ruled on the matter.
"Kyree, you have been a very loyal asset to me in the past. You did a great deed for me and for that I am highly appreciative. I see you want out the game completely and I would be a fool to prevent that. So go home. Go be with your family. As of right now, you're relieved from the Famz indefinitely. Kyree was shocked with how easily Kingdom freed him from the set. At first, he honestly thought that he wasn't going to make it out of Kingdom's office after he said what he had to say. Kingdom was a ruthless leader and ruled the streets by the power of fear. Never had Kyree seen him as kindhearted as he was appearing to be.
"Thank you for understanding, King, said Kyree. Kingdom did nothing but shake his head. Kyree grilled Riley as he turned to walk out of the office.
"Oh, Kyree, said Kingdom. Kyree turned around to look at him. "Tell Roslyn's fine ass I said hello. For some reason, Kingdom's words didn't sit well with Kyree. At all. He didn't know rather to take the statement as a compliment of his girl's beauty or an indirect threat of some sort. Only time would tell. Kyree nodded at Kingdom and dismissed himself from the room.
"I need to talk to you at the party tonight, Riley. Make sure that you're there.
"I got you, boss, Riley responded. Kingdom reclined back in his chair and twiddled his fingers as Riley left the room. Kingdom was grateful for what Kyree did for him but he was also appalled by the fact that Kyree tried to hold it over his head as leeway. Kingdom was his own man and didn't need anyone to do shit for him. But all bullshit aside, Kyree was one hell of a warrior. It seemed that once he got locked up, all hell broke loose on the streets. An assassination attempt on his life left Kingdom in a coma for three months, and his right-hand-man of ten years with six bullets in his head. The streets wouldn't be the same without Kyree on them and Kingdom knew it. Usually Kingdom would allow NO ONE to walk away from the game that easily. But fuck it. If Kyree wanted out the game then he was out. He was always loyal to his Famz and possibly took a fall for the entire empire by innocently doing three hard years, so he deserved to be free if that's what he wanted. Kingdom would just have to live with the fact that Kyree was no longer a young hoodlum, but a grown man. A free man.
******
"You a fuckin' asshole for that shit, Riley, spat Kyree walking around the car to open his door.
"Like I said, it was orders, my nigga. Besides, aren't you happy you don't have to worry about rather or not Kingdom would come lookin' for you?
"That shit ain't over with Kingdom, Kyree shot, cutting his eyes at Riley, "I could see it in his eyes. Kingdom still wants me to be down and won't stop trying until I am again.
"He said you were free from the Famz, Ky. Kingdom always keeps his word.
"That's what you silly-muthafuccas think.
"What the fuck is that supposed to mean, nigga? Kyree didn't answer Riley. He just climbed into the truck, slamming the door behind him. Riley shook his head and climbed into the car after him. "Yo, Ky, said Riley, pulling out onto the avenue, "You need to chill out, homeboy. You get out of prison and think you can talk to niggas however you want. You might've tricked niggas on the inside with that hardcore shit but don't try that shit out here on the streets. Shit will get you murked, cousin.
"Riley, Kyree sighed, "what the fuck are you talking about?
"Da fuck you mean what am I talking about? That was some ballsy shit you pulled with Kingdom. Niggas can't just talk to Kingdom however they want. What the fuck was you thinkin'?
"Man, fuck that shit, spat Kyree, "When I was locked up, my whole perception of life changed. My shit was goin' nowhere fast. Fuckin' wit Kingdom? Hell, that was gonna leave me dead or with three strikes. All I want to do is settle down with my future wife, take care of my child, and get a well-paying LEGIT job. Is that so much for a nigga to ask?
"Hell no, said Riley, "but you want an average life. Kyree, average people have average lives, and you ain't average nigga. You're practically a hood legend. Kyree chuckled to himself and gazed out of the window.
"That's the problem wit niggas today. Muthafuccas rather be remembered for all the coke they pushed or how many niggas they killed or how many cars they had instead of what matters most: how good of a person they were. None of that hood shit will matter when heaven comes calling. When your day comes and God takes you off this earth, the only thing that will matter is if you were a good enough person in life to pass through them pearly gates in the sky. Heaven or hell, nigga! Which one do you think you'll go to when you die? Kyree looked over at Riley and saw that he was really thinking hard about what he was saying. It almost looked as if he were going to cry so Kyree decided to continue. "I mean, I can understand a black man wanting to appear hard or gangsta. I can't fault you for that, you know why? Because that's what you're environment tells you is coo. And it's a fact that people will adapt to their environment just like all creatures do. For instance, bitches these days won't holla if they think a nigga is a square so what does a nigga do? He pulls down his pants, tucks a gun in his draws and calls himself a thug. Bitches don't holla at niggas who ain't got money so what do broke niggas like us do? Since we don't want to embarrass ourselves working at McDonalds, we hit the streets for that fast paper. Bitches are turned on by hustling-ass niggas so that's what we do. Do you realize that you wouldn't even do half the dumb-ass bullshit you do if it wasn't for bitches? Niggas is lettin' pussy that they aren't even gettin' control their lives and ultimately determine the future of their souls.
"Myyyy god, Kyree, said Riley, shaking his head, "you should have stayed in school. You a smart muthafucca. Like a ghetto Einstein or some shit.
"I was just enlightened in prison, Riley. I did some self-examining. Took time to think about the present, my future, and what I really wanted in life. We all behold this knowledge but only the wise will use it to their advantage. We have to do for us and not for them.
"You a deep nigga, Kyree, Riley said, making a left on Kenton Street, "but what about niggas who hustle just to survive? A lot of niggas don't hustle for a bitch's sake. Some hustle because they have no choice, right?
"I must admit that I feel some niggas have no choice but to hustle. The government sees the struggles goin' on in America's ghettos but do nothin' about it. That's because the black race is the last race anyone is worried about. I don't care where the hell you come from. If you're black then you're automatically cursed. So us niggas don't run to the government for help. We take it upon ourselves to do what we must to survive. It takes money to make money, that's a fact; I don't give a fuck what nobody says. But it doesn't take money to hustle. All it takes is a nigga witta' reason. And that's just the way the world is, you know?
"So, what about a nigga like me, Kyree? Do you think I have a choice?
"Everybody has a choice, Riley. I'm sure you got a nice little stash put away from your years of pushin', right?
"You could say that.
"Well do you know that hustlin' is not the end of the road? Take some of that money you got saved and invest it in something legit. Something positive. Something besides drugs!
"I feel you, Ky, mumbled Riley. "But it's not as easy as you're makin it sound.
"Nobody ever said life's journey would be easy, Riley. All I'm trying to say is this hood life isn't the end. What's more important to you: Temporary life on earth or eternal life after death? Heaven or hell? Is what you do now really gonna be worth it in the long run?
"I take it that you got on your spiritual while you were in the bricks? joked Riley. Kyree chuckled.
"You can say that. I actually picked up a bible. And I can honestly say that the stuff inside of it makes a lot more sense then the shit we see everyday in this world. Riley looked as if he were deep into thought. Just as Kyree thought he had done his boy some good, reality checked back in. Riley peered out the windshield and spotted a familiar face on the corner of 19th.
"That crack-bitch owes me some money! he shouted, cutting off a motorist as he floored the gas and slashed into the right lane. Kyree just shook his head and sighed, knowing some bullshit was about to pop off. A short brown-skinned lady with long squiggly hair and a curvy body noticed a white Blazer carelessly speeding in her direction. Her eyes grew wide in fear as she shoved her sugar daddy's hands off her butt and took off down Lexington Street. The tires to the Blazer screeched loudly as Riley swung the truck onto Lexington and quickly accelerated up the block.
"Is this really necessary! shouted Kyree over the loud revving of the engine. Riley didn't respond. His dark eyes were fully focused on the woman dashing through someone's front yard and into an alley. Riley pulled the truck up to the alley and hopped out to chase the young lady on foot. She dashed fast and hard over empty liquor bottles and trashcans making her way towards the tall metal fence in front of her. Out of all the alleys¦ she thought to herself. The young woman jumped onto the fence and began climbing to the top. She was able to get one leg over before Riley grabbed her by the back of her belt and pulled her straight off the fence to the pavement twelve feet below. Her body hit the ground with sickening thud, causing her to scream out in pain.
"Why the fuck you runnin' from me, Shawna? Riley scowled, removing his pistol from under his hoodie. "Why the fuck was you runnin' from me, bitch! Shawna tried to say something but there wasn't an ounce of wind left in her body. Her lips were moving but her words were on mute. "Where's my fucking money, Shawna! Riley shouted, viciously kicking her in the ribs. Shawna groaned loudly, spitting up a wad of blood in the process. "Shawna, shot Riley, cocking his nine, "does Riley Tulips have to smoke a bitch today? Shawna slowly rolled up onto her face and knees trying to pull herself to her feet. "Shawna!
"No, Riley, she whined with tears in her eyes.
"What?
"No!
"Then where the fuck is my money, bitch?!
"G¦G-Money has it.
"Who?
"G-Money!
"Da fuck is a G-Money? Riley asked, confused. Shawna was able to crawl to her hands and knees before Riley grabbed her by the hair and placed his gun against her temple. Her lip was bleeding wildly and her face was doused in sweat and tears.
"G-Money doesn't owe me money, Shawna. Do you have my shit or not?
"Riley, she cried in a trembling voice, "I can get you your money, boo. All I'll need is a couple of hours, baby and I swear” Riley flipped the gun around and bashed Shawna in the temple with the butt of it. Blood gushed freely from her head as she smacked into the ground. Riley viciously stomped Shawna's head into the pavement until her eyes rolled into the back of her head. When she finally stopped moving, he ripped the pockets off of her jeans and took the 400 dollars and dime bag of weed that he found. Checking the block for witnesses, he quickly concealed his weapon and trotted back to the car. Kyree sat shaking his head with a look of disgust on his face.
"What, nigga? spat Riley, climbing back into the truck.
"Nigga, that shit really wasn't necessary. Fuck is wrong wit you! Kyree snarled.
"When muthafuccas cross Riley, they get handled. No questions asked.
"She's a muthafuccin' female!
"I don't give a fuck, Riley spat. Ain't like I killed her. At least I don't think I did. But if she ain't got my Velveeta next time I see her, she's dead. Kyree just shook his head. "And for somebody who cared so much, you surely didn't do a damn thang about it.
"That's because I ain't tryna get caught up in any bullshit, dumb-ass! Nigga just take me home.
"But you didn't even give me no pussy yet, baby, Riley joked, rubbing the back of his fingers against Kyree's cheek.
"Fuck you, Riley, spat Kyree, shoving him upside his head. Riley busted out laughing as he put the truck in reverse and backed away from the alley.
"Stop whining like a bitch, Ky. Let's get yo sensitive-ass home before you have a "BF or somethin'.
Chapter 3
Riley pulled the truck up in front of Kyree's temporary place of residents and killed the engine.
"Open that glove box for me, Ky. Riley said.
"For what?
"Nigga, just do it. Kyree took the key from Riley and used it to open the glove box. Inside was a yellow envelope with his name on it.
"Fuck is this? Kyree asked.
"Open it up and find out. Kyree stared at Riley, confused for a moment and then opened the envelope. Inside was a fat stash of crisp 50 dollar bills.
"What's this for, Riley?
"You fresh out the joint, Ky. You have no friends so who the hell else was gonna toss you some paper to get on your toes?
"I got friends, Riley.
"Yeah, but all them niggas work for Kingdom. You ain't a part of the Famz anymore so I doubt they'll be lookin' out for yo ass. Just take the money man. I got plenty.
"I can't take this, homie. I'm a man of my own.
"Kyree! shouted Riley, "Just take it! Kyree didn't want to accept the money from his boy, but he needed it¦badly. I guess one freebee wouldn't hurt he thought to himself.
"Good lookin', Riley. I'll pay you back as soon as I get some cheese of my own.
"You fuckin' right you will, shot Riley, "now get the hell up out my shit. I got some business I need to go handle. Kyree hopped out the truck and gave his man daps. "You know to call me if you need me, right, Ky?
"I know, nigga, Kyree exaggerated.
"Ight, son. Be easy. Riley chucked a deuce and sped off down the block.
After banging on the door for ten minutes to get Janice to open the door, Kyree took a shower and jumped back in bed to take a quick nap. What was meant to be a quick nap turned into four hours. When he awakened, Roslyn was sitting over him smiling in his face.
"What da hell? Kyree shouted with a confused look on his face. Roslyn laughed.
"You look so sexy when you're sleeping, baby. How was your day? Kyree shook off the sleep and ran his hand down his face.
"It was coo. Unfortunately I didn't get anything productive done.
"Fuckin' wit Riley will do that for ya, said Roslyn, kissing her man on the lips.
"Aren't you supposed to be at school? Kyree asked.
"I didn't want to go tonight. I wanna spend some time with my man. Kyree smiled.
"Where's Darent?
"Downstairs, sleeping wit mama. I figured that we needed a little alone time.
"You were surely right. Kyree kissed his girl on the lips and pulled her on top of him. Before he could get her out her blouse, she jumped up from the bed and turned on the light.
"I gotta take a shower, baby. I'll be riiiight back.
"Fuck a shower, baby, I like it funky anways!
"It ain't funky I just need a shower! shouted Roslyn running into the hallway. Kyree sighed deeply and shook his head as he heard Roslyn close the bathroom door behind her. He still hadn't busted a nut since he was released and was thinking about just doing it himself. Just before Kyree dozed off again, the ringing of a cell phone caught his attention. Kyree looked to his left and saw Roslyn cell dancing around the bed. His vision then focused to the alarm clock on the nightstand which read 7:49 p.m. Kyree grabbed the cell phone and looked at the caller ID. The number didn't have a name but he decided to answer it anyways.
"Hello? he said in a deep sexy voice.
"Uh¦can I talk to Roslyn, surprisingly said another deep sexy voice on the other end.
"Who's this? Kyree asked, sitting up on the bed.
"Uh¦who is you? The mystery man replied.
"This Kyree. Roslyn's husband. Now who the hell is you?
"Husband? said the man on the phone, "Roslyn ain't got no husband. Just put her on the phone, man. Kyree tried to stay calm but his anger was quickly beginning to take over him.
"Look, nigga, he spat rudely, "I don't know who the fuck you is but don't call my girl's phone no more. The only man she allowed to talk to is me, you got me potna? The man on the line sighed.
"Obviously your on ya period, homeboy. I got shit to do so do me a favor and tell Roslyn that Maurice called, okay? The man on the other line disconnected the call leaving Kyree to ponder over his words. Tiny beads of sweat began to group on Kyree's forehead as his anger began to bubble inside of him. Roslyn said Maurice was a nobody, yet he was calling her out the blue like everything was lovely.
"Fuckin' bitch Kyree mumbled to himself, balling up his fists. If Roslyn was still fuckin' with Maurice, then she would regret coming home that night. Roslyn finished washing every crack and crevice on her body then hopped out the steamy shower. Wrapping herself in a towel, she wiped the steam from the bathroom mirror so she could admire herself. The next hour or so would be all about Kyree and she wanted to make sure that she looked her best. Roslyn picked up her comb and started combing her hair back. Kyree loved how she looked when her hair was wet so she decided to fuck her 'do' up just this once. I might just suck that nigga dick tonight she thought to herself, winking in the mirror then heading for her room. Roslyn walked into her bedroom and dropped her towel for Kyree's viewing pleasure. To her amazement, Kyree didn't seem the least bit interested in what she was offering. He was sitting on the edge of the bed with nothing but anger in his eyes.
"What the hell is wrong wit you? shot Roslyn, placing her hand on her hip.
"Why the fuck did this nigga Maurice just call you?
"What? Roslyn asked, confused.
"That nigga Maurice just called you. He was coo wit his like you and him are lovely like that. And this muthafucca had the audacity to disrespect me like he ain't know who the fuck I be? The fuck is up with you and him, Roslyn?
"I told you already, nothing! I told him a few days ago that you were coming home.
"Did you really think that would stop a nigga from calling? You better call that muthafucca right now and tell him what the deal really is. Let that nigga know not to call yo muthafuccin' ass no more, hear me?
"I'm not gonna be rude like that, Ky. Maurice hasn't done anything to me to deserve that. He's very respectful. Kyree had to crawl onto the floor and do some pushups to stop himself from punching Roslyn in the forehead for that ridiculous statement she just made. How dare this bitch side with Maurice over him!
"Kyree, what the hell are you doing?
"Roslyn, Kyree started, "obviously you didn't know that your life was just in danger. Your siding with this Maurice nigga over me and youz about to get that ass whooped for it.
"How am I siding with Maurice? All he did was call me. I can't put a gun to his head and tell him to stop.
"I can, mumbled Kyree under his breath.
"Look, Kyree, said Roslyn, kneeling down next to him on the floor, "You know the only man in the world that I love is you. Me and Maurice were just friends. I told him that I had a man who I loved and that I wasn't trying to deal with him like that. It's all about you, baby. Is it you or Maurice that's living with me? Baby, If I haven't left you by now then you should know that I never will. We have a son together, Ky. We're a family. And I didn't try to put our business on the streets because I wanted you to hear about Darent from me. Can't you see that the only men I'm worried about are you and our son? Kyree wanted to be mad at Roslyn but her words softened his heart and hardened his dick. He felt that Roslyn's love for him was official and that turned him on. Before he could debate her, Roslyn pushed him onto his back and climbed between his legs. Kyree began to moan and touch his chest as Roslyn unzipped his pants and pulled down his boxers. Roslyn put her lover's manhood in her mouth and sucked every inch of anger he felt towards her out of his penis. Kyree hadn't felt a woman's touch in over three years and it felt damn good. It felt so good that he only lasted forty-five seconds before he released himself. Roslyn swallowed her man accordingly then climbed on top of his dick. She ushered his rod into her love-well and pounced on his lap for twenty minutes straight. The two lovers came in unison then cuddled with each other right there on the floor. Kyree's love for Roslyn grew stronger every time they had sex. Roslyn was a down bitch and he couldn't blame other niggas for wanting her. But she was his and he was going to make sure that he provided all her wants and needs so it stayed that way. Kyree closed his eyes and dozed off, assured that Roslyn was his and Maurice was officially a thing of the past. Only if he knew that his ventures with this Maurice character were just beginning.
******
That night, Darent came upstairs after his nap and got a chance to get to know his father. At first, Darent was shy of Kyree but as time passed, the two began getting along great. They tossed stuffed footballs back and fourth at each other, knocking down all of Roslyn's pictures and a lamp, and wrestled with each other for another half an hour. Darent showed Kyree all of his drawings, which were nothing more then scribbles on paper, but Kyree reacted as if they were works of art by Leonardo Devinchi himself. Roslyn sat on the bed watching her man and their son interact with each other. She was sure glad that Darent seemed to like Kyree. The last thing Roslyn wanted was for her child to be shady of his own father. It wasn't until one-o'clock that morning that Darent finally tired himself out and fell back asleep. Since Darent was accustomed to sleeping in bed with his mother, Kyree accepted the fact that he wasn't gonna get anymore pussy that night. Kyree laid in bed with his woman and his son as happy as can be. When he first was released from prison, Kyree thought that Roslyn would be a thing of the past. Of course she mailed him letters every week but he thought she was only doing it so he wouldn't feel lonely. Roslyn didn't visit Kyree for the entire last year that he was locked up and that was another reason why he felt she was through with him. She always used the excuse that she couldn't stand seeing him locked up anymore and Kyree thought that was bullshit. He was also mad at the fact that she didn't tell him he had a son but the past was the past. Roslyn handled things her own way. That's just how she was. But all of that didn't matter now. The only thing that mattered to Kyree now was to make sure that he would be able to take care of his family and that he NEVER left their side again. Tomorrow, he would spend the entire day job hunting and would not return home until he covered as much ground as possible.
Chapter 4
The next day, Kyree was up bright and early. He had showered and left the house by 8:00 a.m. None of the clothing shops were open yet so his first stop was to see his boy Riley to barrow something educated to wear. After five minutes of negotiating, Riley finally allowed Kyree to barrow a cream sweater and a pair of black slacks. Kyree's next stop was to McDonald's to grab a bite for the long journey he had ahead of him. Public transportation took Kyree into the city where more than 90% of every venue was owned by a white person. The first company Kyree decided to apply for was Michelangelo's Towing Company. Sure it wouldn't be the best job in the world but it would be a start. The Hispanic manager gave him a three-page application and Kyree filled it out accordingly. The manager thanked him for applying and told him that they would contact him in a few days. The next spot Kyree decided to hit up was a Radio Shack down the block. He was good with electronics so Radio Shack wouldn't be a bad place to work. When Kyree walked inside, an uppity white man greeted him and asked what he could do for him. Unfortunately the white man said that they weren't hiring even though their ad in the paper clearly stated that they were. When Kyree asked him about this, he was told that the position had already been filled. Oh well. On to the next place. Kyree applied for a total of thirteen jobs that day, a few being Home Depot, Best Buy, a men's fashion store at the mall, Orange Julius, Kinko's, Footlocker and even McDonald's, the place he told himself that he would never be caught working at. It was now 5:00 in the evening and time to go home. Waiting at the bus stop on 15th and Claritin, Kyree noticed a familiar face, smiling, as it approached him. The short man wore a raggedy winter hat and a pair of holey gloves. His beard was long and nappy and had a few gray hairs sprinkled in with the black ones.
"Kyree, my man, how are you? the short man said in a raspy voice. Kyree still couldn't place a name, but he held his fist out as the homeless-looking man gave him daps. "Ah, don't tell me you don't remember me? We go back, man! As hard as Kyree was trying, he didn't remember the man at all. "It's me¦Snoopy.
"Snoopy? said Kyree in utter shock, "Snoopy what¦what happened to you, man? Snoopy just shook his head and peered down the avenue.
"Nothin' man. Just been a little stressed out, you know? Snoopy didn't look anything like Kyree remembered him to. Before Kyree went away on his second strike, Snoopy was the playa of all playas. He had looks, money, cars, girls, and most of all, self-pride. Snoopy was only 32 years old but looked more like he was in his fifties. His once-hansom face was now broken from the effects of shooting crack and his skin was rough and blistered. Kyree tried not to screw up his face when Snoopy's god-awful stench assaulted his nose. Back in the day, Snoopy was Kyree's mentor on the streets. The two were as tight as brothers all the way up to when Kyree got locked up. Now, Snoopy was totally unrecognizable.
"What do you mean a little stressed out, Snoopy? I'm sorry to say this man but you look like shit.
"Heeey, man be easy, Snoopy said backing off with his hands up in defense, "It's not polite to down talk others.
"I'm not meaning to down talk you, Snoopy. I mean¦before I went away, you was the man. Now¦I mean look at you? Kingdom ain't treating you right?
"Kingdom? said Snoopy, waving Kyree off, "Kingdom disowned me a long time ago man.
"What happened? I thought you and him were close like brothers?
"That was until I wanted out the game, Snoopy said, "When I told him that I had seen enough drugs, dirty money, and death, he told me I was a fool for even thinking about leaving the Famz. Talkin' about I still had responsibilities or some shit. I gave Kingdom my all for fifteen years, Kyree. He never had a problem out of me. But when he found out that I was leaving the game no matter what he said, he had a few guys put a few shells in me and throw me into a dumpster. Thank the Lord above that I survived. To his Knowledge, I'm not alive anymore.
"Damn, I'm so sorry to hear that, Snoopy, said Kyree with watery eyes. It took a few moments for Snoopy to realize that he didn't know if Kyree was still working for Kingdom or not.
"Wait a minute, Kyree, mumbled Snoopy backing away, "you're not gonna tell Kingdom about me, right?
"What? said Kyree, "Man, hell no! I don't fuck wit him anymore either. I'm done wit this street life bullshit. I'ma stays on the straight and narrow from now on. I gotta family to take care of.
"That's good, Kyree. That's real good. Can I just ask you one thing?
"Yeah, wassup?
"How come Kingdom wanted me dead but hasn't come for you? Doesn't he know that you're out? Kyree did feel bad that Kingdom let him go easily but had tried to murder one of his best friends for trying to leave the game. What was that all about?
"Honestly, I don't know, Snoopy. Maybe he just wanted me to believe that I was free. Maybe he'll still come for me, you know? Snoopy chugged his way towards Kyree and placed a dirty hand on his shoulder.
"Get out of here, Kyree. Take whatever you need and get the fuck out of this fucking city. The good Lord told me that I would run into somebody today who's life was in danger and desperately needed my help. That person is you, Kyree. Kyree didn't know what the fuck Snoopy was on, but for some reason his words sent a cold chill up his spine. Surprisingly, Snoopy said nothing more as he turned and walked away. Kyree almost broke down in tears watching the man who he once considered his big brother, walk out of his life without even saying goodbye. Kyree promised himself to keep Snoopy's words of wisdom fresh in his mind. For some strange, wildly-odd reason, Kyree felt that God was using Snoopy to warn him about something. Something of an incredible fate.

Darkness fell on West County which meant the goons of the night were just now awakening. Riley stood in the shadows on the corner of 45th and Madison, serving the fiends, when a black Lincoln pulled up to the curb. There was no reason to reach for the heat because Riley knew exactly whose car it was. Ike stepped out of the driver's seat and walked around the car to open the back door up for his boss. Kingdom arose from the backseat of the car and stretched his back. His body had stiffened from riding in the car all day running errands.
"What's good, Riley? Kingdom asked, approaching him.
"Ain't shit. Just out here serving these hypes.
"Is business proper?
"You know I keep these heads spending.
"That's what I like to here, Riley, said King, placing his back against the wall next to Riley.
"So what brings you my way, Kingdom? Riley asked.
"I wanted to talk to you about ya boy, Kyree.
"What about him?
"How do you feel about the decision I made to relieve him from the Famz? Riley shrugged his shoulders.
"I feel okay about it I guess. I mean, Kyree had been down for a long-ass time. I feel that he deserves his retirement. Especially after what he did for the Famz.
"Do you feel like I treated him differently from the other brothers on the Famz?
"What do you mean differently? Riley questioned.
"Don't play stupid, Riley, you know exactly what I'm talking about. A few niggas on the Hood feel like I let Kyree off too easily. Like I treated him better than I would have treated anyone else.
"Well, you're the boss, Kingdom, so if niggas gotta problem with how you run shit then that's too damn bad. Kingdom just laughed to himself.
"You know, Riley¦Kyree was one of the best men I've ever had work for me. He was one hell of a warrior out here on these streets. I miss him, Riley. Riley wasn't stupid. He knew what Kingdom was trying to say.
"Kingdom, Kyree has changed. He's no longer the boy who used to put in work on these streets. He did you a good deed by taking that drug charge for you. All he wants to do is settle down, get a good job, and take care of his family now.
"Family, huh? said Kingdom, blowing a ring of smoke from his mouth. "I remember when it was us he used to call family.
"Kingdom, you know that Kyree still has a great deal of respect for that Famz, and especially you. You can't fault a guy for wanting to get on the straight and narrow. Especially after he put in proper work.
"I guess you're right, Riley, said Kingdom, placing a hand on Riley's shoulder, "Just do me a favor?
"What is that, Kingdom?
"Keep a close eye on Kyree for me. Kyree is like a son to me. If anyone tries to bring him harm, I want to make sure that I can be there for him, you hear? Riley knew that Kingdom was up to no-good, but he couldn't place a finger on exactly what his angle was. Something about Kingdom's approach was odd.
"I got you, Kingdom. Kingdom patted Riley on the back and hauled his giant body back into the Lincoln. In the blink of an eye, the car sped off and disappeared into the night.
Chapter 5
A week and a half had passed and Kyree hadn't heard anything from any of the jobs he had applied for. He had applied for at least four jobs everyday and not a single person called him back like they promised to; not even to tell him that he didn't get the job. It was frustrating on Kyree, but he kept his head up. In the meantime, he was able to spend a lot of time catching up with all the time he missed out on with his son. Kyree spent some of the money that Riley let him hold to take Darent to the movies, Fun Zone, the mall, Toys R Us, and out to eat. Kyree even used some of the money to put groceries in the house, seeing how he was usually the one eating up all the food. A few more days had passed and Kyree had grown very frustrated with the working world. On Thursday afternoon, Kyree finally got a call from one of the places he applied at.
"Hello? Kyree said, answering the house phone.
"Hi! This is Carrie Wilson from Wal-Mart on 53rd and Federal! May I speak to a¦K¦Ky¦Kyrrr¦
"Kyree Warner? said Kyree, upset with the fact that the dumb bitch couldn't pronounce his name.
"Ah, yes, that's it. Kyree. Is he available?
"This is he.
"Hi, Kyree. I'm calling about the previous application you recently turned into us about a job?
"Did I get the job? Kyree asked, feeling a little more hopeful than he was five minutes ago.
"Well, unfortunately we have no openings for the position that you applied for at this time.
"What about any other openings? I can do more than count money, ma'am. I can be a stocker, I can drive pretty good, I'm pretty good with electronics too. I mean, I can practically do anything.
"Well that's great, Kyree, but the problem is your background.
"What about it? shot Kyree.
"You have a criminal record and we see that you have just recently been released from prison. Here at Wal-Mart, we believe in rewarding good people with good jobs. If Kyree could transport through the phone and break this woman's neck, then he most definitely would.
"What the fuck is that supposed to mean, lady! shouted Kyree, full of anger and rage, "Are you trying to say that because of the fact that I've made bad decisions in the past, I can't get a job?
"Sir, I don't make these rules, I just”
"Bullshit, bitch! Kyree lashed, "You think that just because a nigga was down and out for a while means that he can't change. Woman, I've made some bad decisions in my life but I'm a changed man now. How dare you sit up here and call me a bad person because I'm not perfect. Fuck makes you better than me?
"I did not call you a bad person! squeaked the Wal-Mart representative, defending herself.
"But you implied it, ho! Kyree shot back, "How is it that you muthafucca's will hire an illegal alien, who you know NOTHING at all about, before you hire a muthafuccin' black man who is a citizen of this shady-ass country?
"I do not have to sit here and take this lashing, said the young lady in a trembling voice.
"Ya damn right ya don't. Go suck some more cooperate dick, bitch!
"Young man, I'll have you know” Kyree slammed the receiver on the hook and tossed the entire phone at the wall, smashing it into pieces. Anger was boiling inside of him and it was about to lash out and kill something.
"Kyree, what the hell is wrong with you? said Janice, coming out of the kitchen. Kyree breathed deeply to calm himself down.
"I'm sorry, Janice. I just overreacted. I'll buy you a new phone.
"And do it now! she shot, looking at Kyree like he was a fucking lunatic. Kyree shook his head then ran a hand down his tired face. "Crazy muthafucca, Janice mumbled under her breath as she disappeared back into the kitchen. Darent came running down the stairs with his favorite toy in his hands.
"Kyree! Darent called. He hadn't grown accustomed to calling him father yet.
"Can I go with you t-to the store?
"Who told you I was goin' to the store, D? Kyree asked.
"You have to go buy phone. I heard it. Man, was Darent a bright kid. He was only two years old and was already breaking shit down. Kyree didn't really want to take Darent with him, but why the hell not? He wanted to spend as much time possible with his son until he heard the words "daddy come out of his mouth.
"Alright, little man. Go put your coat on. Darent ran back upstairs as fast as he could to get his coat. Before Kyree could follow him up the stairway to grab his money, the doorbell rang. On his way to the front door, Kyree could see a cherry 2006 Escalade sitting on 24 inch spinners parked out front. The whip was nice, he had to admit. Who the hell could this be? Kyree thought to himself as he unlocked the door. When the door flung open, a confused look spread across Kyree's face. A tall, milk-chocolate man with flawless skin and a fresh fade stood outside of the door, checking the time on his $30,000 Rolex.
"May I help you? Kyree asked, raising an eyebrow. The man looked up from his watch and saw Kyree staring at him with sharp eyes.
"Is Roslyn here? he asked in a smooth, familiar voice.
"Who is you, homie? Kyree shot. The man looked Kyree up and down then sucked his teeth.
"I'm Maurice. Roslyn should be expecting me, potna. Kyree's fist tightened so hard that his knuckles began to crack themselves.
"Fuck are you doin' here, nigga? Kyree spat, "I thought I told you to stay the fuck away from my girl? Maurice just laughed.
"I don't know who the fuck you is, nigga, said Maurice, appearing calm, "so you don't tell me what the fuck to do. All I do know is that Roslyn is expecting me. Can you get her for me, homeboy? Kyree had had it with this nigga. First he calls Roslyn's phone and shows no respect, then he shows up at his boo's house looking for her. Some niggas just had to learn the hard way.
"Potna, I'ma give you five seconds to be the fuck off my porch, Kyree scowled, stepping into Maurice's face. Maurice matched Kyree's stare, smirking in his face like he was a joke to him.
"And you got five seconds to go get Roslyn before I get angry, little nigga. Monte, Maurice's homeboy, saw the altercation unfolding from inside of the Escalade, and grabbed the desert from under the seat. He cocked it back and got out the truck to move on the situation. Kyree stood two seconds from breaking Maurice's jaw before Darent came running back down the stairs.
"Wassup, Maurice! Darent shouted, running towards the door. The evil look on Maurice's face quickly turned into a smile when he saw Darent running towards him.
"Wassup, D? Maurice replied. Confused, Kyree turned around and put his hand on Darent's chest to stop him from running out the door.
"Darent, go back upstairs, he ordered.
"But, I wanna see Maurice, Darent pouted.
"Darent! Go the fuck back upstairs, you hear me!? Don't make me have to ask yo muthafuccin' ass again! Kyree had never yelled at Darent before, and the look on little Darent's face made him never want do it again. Tears filled Darent's big brown eyes as he backed away from his father. The man he had been growing so close to, he was now scared of. Kyree almost broke down in tears himself, seeing the look in his son's eyes before realizing the situation that was still at hand. When Kyree turned to face Maurice, he was waving off his man who was reluctantly tucking the chrome into his pants.
"Look, Maurice, started Kyree with watery eyes, "Roslyn has a family now. She's no longer a single bird for you to get at whenever you feel like it. Please respect my shit and stay the fuck away from us. With that, Kyree slammed the door in Maurice's face. Kyree turned around and saw Janice grilling him with little Darent holding onto her leg. Janice screwed her face up and shook her head.
"Strike two, Kyree, she hissed. Kyree just shook his head and went upstairs. He didn't know who to be more mad at; Roslyn, Maurice, or himself. Maybe if he would have kept his act straight three years ago, Roslyn wouldn't of had to fuck with other niggas. But what hurt Kyree the most was seeing the look in his son's teary eyes as he backed away from him in fear.
******
Roslyn tiredly pushed her bedroom door opened and dropped all of her things on the floor. Flicking on the light, the first thing she saw was Kyree sitting on the edge of her bed, this time with hurt in his eyes.
"What's wrong, baby? she asked, rushing to his side to comfort him. Kyree didn't reply. He sat staring at the wall with his right hand cradling his left fist. "Baby, what happened? Kyree still didn't reply. His breathing grew heavier every second Roslyn sat next to him. "Kyree, will you please tell me what's wrong!
"Get the fuck away from me, Roslyn, said Kyree, nonchalantly.
"What? What the hell did I do this time, Kyree? she asked with much attitude.
"Maurice came through today. He said you were expecting him, Kyree said, turning his head to look at Roslyn.
"What? Roslyn asked, confused.
"Nothing, Roz. Just leave me alone, okay? Kyree got up and put on his coat.
"Where the hell are you going, Ky? Roslyn asked, standing from the bed. Kyree didn't respond. He grabbed his hat, and headed for the door.
"You are not walking away from me, Kyree. Not this time! Roslyn chased her man and pushed him towards the wall so she could block off the exit. Kyree forcefully grabbed Roslyn by her arms and shoved her into the wall next to the door. Roslyn had never before feared Kyree, but the dark look in his eyes truly scared her. Gradually tears flooded her eyes and eventually spilled over onto her cheeks. Kyree was breathing so hard that he was almost growling. Realizing what he was doing, Kyree freed Roslyn from his grasp and stormed out the room.
******
The sun slowly began to fade in the horizon, giving the city skies a beautiful orange glow. That evening, Riley decided to hit the block a little early to make a little extra cash for the weekend. No sooner than he landed on his spot, his cell went off.
"Hello? he answered.
"Yo, Riley, it's Kyree.
"Wassup, thug? Riley asked.
"Not shit. I need a favor, homie. Riley sighed.
"You always need favors, homie. I can't always leave what im doing to do something for you.
"Look nigga, Kyree shot feeling very impatient, "just do this last thing for me and I won't ask yo ass for shit else, alright?
"Damn, Ky Riley sang, "be easy, man. What you need?
"I need you to come pick me up on the corner of 54th and Downing. I'm at the payphone at the end of the road.
"What the hell you doin' at a payphone? Riley asked.
"Nigga, just get here.
"Alright, man, Riley sighed, "damn, man you fuckin' up my money.
"Whatever. Just be here. With that, Kyree hung up the phone.
"Gat damn bastard, Riley mumbled to himself, flipping his phone closed and stuffing it in his pocket. Riley sighed and jogged to the parking lot up the road to his Blazer. Guess there wouldn't be any money made tonight.
******
"What's wrong wit you, man? Riley asked as Kyree climbed into the passenger seat.
"I just need to go somewhere and clear my mind, man. Shit's been stressful lately.
"I feel it, said Riley, puttin the Blazer in drive. "But what do you want me to do about it?
"You're the only person I could call to get away. Please believe if I had anyone else's number, I wouldn't have called you.
"Fuck you, Ky, said Riley, slowing down for a stoplight. Kyree laughed.
"Naw, but fareal, the city's changed drastically since I've been locked up. Can't you take off tonight and get me into somethin'?
"Somethin' like what, Kyree? Riley asked.
"Anything, man. A party or somethin', shit. I know niggas be groovin' on Thursday nights. Riley took a few moments to think.
"Aha! You haven't been to the Baller's Hall yet, huh?
"The what? Kyree asked.
"It's a new nightclub downtown. The shit's fire. I see your sad ass is in desperate need so I guess I can take off a few hours. Let's go get faded my man.
"That's wassup, said Kyree, kicking back in his seat. The club scene was one of Kyree's favorite pastimes. It was exactly what he needed to relieve the God-awful stress he had been under lately.
******
When Riley and Kyree pulled up in front of The Baller's Hall, Kyree's eyes lit up in amazement. The venue looked more like a big-ass spaceship from the future rather than a night club.
"Damn son! I should have had on my best fit to roll up in this muthafucca! shouted Kyree in excitement.
"I had a feeling you would like it, said Riley, happy to see his boy smiling, "but we haven't even got inside yet so let's make a move. Strobe lights on the roof of the building shined every which way as a long line of fine-ass people stood outside, hoping to get in the club. The atmosphere was off the chain.
"Damn, this shit is packed, said Kyree, fixing up the Sean John sweater he had on, "you would think it was a Saturday night or somethin'.
"Every night is a Saturday night at this muthafucca, said Riley, popping a mint to freshen his breath. "Plus it's ladies night. So you know it's about to be crackin' inside.
"Hell yes! shouted Riley. The two friends had no problem getting into the club. Kyree was surprised to see how connected Riley had become in the city. Before he went away, Riley was just another soldier working for Kingdom. Now it seemed like he was a king of his own. The bouncers gave Riley daps and allowed him and Kyree to pass through the front doors. The inside of the club was even more spectacular than the outside. The sound system was booming, causing Kyree's bones to jiggle without even trying. The club consisted of three floors: On the first floor was the main dance floor. It was crowded with hundreds of people dancing to the grooves of the latest 50 Cent joint. Up the spiral stairs, which circled around the entire first floor, were stripper stages. Gorgeous ladies seductively danced on and around poles, working their naked bodies to the bass-throbbing beat. On the floor above that was the VIP section. All the big ballers, athletes, and drug lords were kicking it up there with the flyest women in town.
"How did I not know about this shit! yelled Kyree, nodding his head to the beat.
"Because you've had your head stuck up the cooperate ass every since you got out the joint, Ky. Take some time to get yo party on, nigga! Riley shouted, doing the cabbage patch like it was still in style. Two light-skinned girls dressed in tube tops and tight skirts walked past Kyree and Riley, their fat asses following behind them.
"Good¦Lawd! shouted Riley, gnawing at his fist as he zoomed in one of the lady's asses. "I might have to take the whole night off, Ky!
"You ain't never lied, said Kyree, admiring the same ass Riley was, "come on, potna. Let's go hit the bar. Kyree and Riley made their way through the pack of people to the bar up the ramp to the side of the dance floor.
"Long Island Ice Tea, said Kyree to the bartender, taking a seat on one of the stools.
"Apple Martini, said Riley, taking a seat next to him. Kyree looked at Riley with a raised eyebrow.
"Apple Martini? Nigga, youz a bitch!.
"Fuck you, Ky. They taste delicious. The two friends enjoyed a long laugh together.
"So how are you and Roslyn doin'? Riley asked, waiting for his drink. Kyree shook his head.
"I swear that woman drives me up the wall. I think she was fuckin' wit this one nigga while I was in jail because he keeps comin' around lookin' for her.
"Say what? Riley asked in disbelief.
"Hell yeah, son. Nigga ain't got no respect for me and mines.
"What did Roslyn say about the whole situation?
"She's acting like she has no clue as to what the fuck's goin' on. I'm bout tired of that shit.
"You better put yo shawty in check, Ky, said Riley accepting his drink from the bartender, "You know that she knows exactly what the fuck is goin' on.
"Hell, I know it, said Kyree. "But fuck all that, I wanted to get out tonight so I wouldn't have to think about that. So let's just have a good time and do us.
" I feel that shit, Riley said taking a sip of his drink. Kyree spun around to check out the crowed on the dance floor while sipping on his Long Island. Focusing his vision, he noticed a beautiful Puerto Rican chick eyeing him from the midst of the crowed.
"I think shawty's eyeing you, Ky, Riley said, smiling at his boy.
"Is she? Kyree asked, unsure. The beautiful lady began to approach Kyree in what seemed to be slow motion as people danced to the beat around her. Kyree had to admit, shorty was fine as a muthafucca. Fuck that. She was finer than fine. She had long curly hair and vibrant light skin. Her lips were thick and beautiful and her body¦curved to perfection. She had on a revealing red dress which hugged her body like a second skin. Her neckline plunged down just above her stomach, displaying her giant, juicy breast, which were being smooshed together by her outfit. My god Kyree thought to himself as he felt his manhood hardening.
"Hola, papi, the seductive young lady said as she walked up on him.
"Wassup, ma, Kyree replied, trying to play it cool.
"Wassup girrrl, Riley said, playing the background.
"Hey, she answered with a grin. "So, is this seat taken? she asked pointing at an empty seat next to Kyree.
"Do you see a booty in it? The lady laughed.
"No I don't.
"Then take a seat, Kyree gestured. The young lady happily jumped in the seat next to Kyree.
"Nice night, huh? she asked, taking in the sights and sounds of the nightclub.
"Yeah, it's off the chain up in here, said Kyree. "So what's ya name, ma? he asked, sipping his drink.
"I'm Nicole. You?
"The name's Kyree. Pleased to meet you, Kyree said, shaking her hand.
"Likewise, papi.
"I'ma leave you two alone, Riley whispered in Kyree's ear as he stood up to go look for some ass of his own. It didn't take him long to notice a cute little chocolate thang eyeing him in the corner.
"So you and ya boy are just here to relax, huh? Nicole asked.
"You could say that, Kyree answered. "Just trying to relieve some stress.
"Ah, from¦?
"Work, Kyree lied.
"That's cool.
"What about you, Nicole? Nicole looked down at her feet and bit her bottom lip.
"I just got out of an abusive relationship. I guess you can say I'm out to relieve a little stress as well.
"I'm sorry to hear that, ma.
"Ah, it's nothin'. Anyways, I like that shirt you rockin', pa.
"This old thing? Kyree said, like he didn't just buy it two days ago.
"Yeah, that old thing. Nicole smiled. Kyree chuckled.
"Thanks, ma. There isn't a need for me to tell you how good you look in that dress.
"Hell, I know, boo, Nicole said, feeling cocky at the moment. Kyree laughed.
"Conceited ass.
"Naw, not me, papi. I was just playing.
"Ain't nothin' wrong with tellin' the truth, said Kyree, admiring Nicole's wonderful bust line. Nicole blushed.
"So, do you have a girl, Kyree?
"Who me? Kyree asked dumbly.
"Yes you! It was in a man's nature to be untruthful when it came to a fine-ass woman asking him if he had a girl and he did. But being the good man that he was, Kyree dug deep inside to honor his boo.
"Yeeaah I gotta girl. She's a pain in the ass though.
"Most of us are, said Nicole, "but don't worry. If she's the right one for you then everything will work itself out.
"I sure hope so, Kyree sighed, finishing off his drink. "Anyways, who are you here with?
"Would you laugh at me if I said myself?
"Are you serious? Kyree asked in disbelief.
"I know it's not cool to go out alone, but some people find peace in being with themselves, you know?
"I can¦ kind of feel that, said Kyree as the two began to chuckle in unison.
"Don't make fun of me, Kyree. One being a loner is nothing to joke about.
"I'm not laughing at you, ma. It's just that¦the only women I know of who go out to clubs alone¦are the ones who aren't planning on going home alone. It took Nicole a quick second to realize what Kyree was saying.
"Oh, hell no sweetie. I'm not that type of girl. I'm just here chilling. Doing me. If that's what you think of me then I guess I made a mistake approaching you. Nicole got up and went to walk but Kyree stopped her short, gently grabbing her by the arm.
"Don't leave, Nicole. I'm sorry for real. I didn't mean to insult you in any way, okay? Nicole looked as if she didn't believe him, so Kyree continued. "Look ma, just come sit back down and let's talk. I'm really, really sorry, okay? Besides, if you walk off, the bartender here is gonna laugh his ass off at me for getting played like that. Nicole looked at the bartender who looked like he was ready to bust out laughing. She wanted to walk off and let Kyree's ass be embarrassed, but he was just too cute for that. Tonight was his lucky night.
"Well we don't wanna give Mr. Bartender that satisfaction, do we?
"Hell naw, said Kyree smiling. Nicole smiled and retook her seat next to Kyree. "So what you drinkin, ma? he asked her. The two sat at the bar, sipping drinks and talking about everything from politics to fried baloney and egg sandwiches. Nicole was a cool-ass female. She came off as real and down to earth to Kyree and he loved that about her. Not to mention she was the flyest bitch he had seen for a minute. Nicole liked Kyree too. She thought he was kind and very smart, which was a big turn-on for her. She was tired of the same lame ignorant-ass niggas who tried to use their money or cars to reel her in instead of their brains. After getting to know him better, Nicole was somewhat upset that Kyree had a girlfriend. Four hours after they had arrived at the club, Riley had broken off his piece of ass in the bathroom and was ready to go back to West County to hit the block. Kyree explained to Nicole why he couldn't give her his number but asked for hers. They were just "friends of course. Kyree reluctantly said his goodbyes to Nicole and ventured off back to the car with Riley.
"What did you think about the club, my nigga? Riley asked, starting up the Blazer.
"Shit was fire, yo. Especially Nicole. I swear that's one bad bitch.
"You need to fuck with her, Ky. Roslyn can be ya girl, but that bitch in there is the type of bitch that only comes around once a lifetime. I'd beat the brakes off that pussy!
"I don't know, Riley, said Ky, pulling on his chin hairs.
"What is there not to know? Did you see all them niggas in there grilling you because you had shorty locked down?
"Hell yeah I noticed that shit, Kyree chuckled, "but¦Roslyn is my boo man. I couldn't bear hurting her like that.
"You mean like the same way she's hurting you? Riley's words hit Kyree hard. Kyree could tell that Roslyn had fucked and probably still was fucking Maurice. He was trying desperately to give her the benefit of the doubt but he wasn't fooling shit. A bitch was gonna be a bitch so a nigga was gonna be a nigga. As Riley pulled the car off, Kyree thought deeply about his boy's last words. You mean like the same way that she's hurting you?
Chapter 6
Three weeks had gone by and Kyree was finally employed¦as a muthafuccing janitor at a fast food restaurant. The shit was wack, no doubt, but it was the only job that called him back. Kyree had worked at Paco's for two weeks now and had finally received his first check. It read $85.29.
"What the fuck is this? Kyree asked himself, standing at the bust stop looking at his check for the first time. "Ah, hell naw! I busted my ass everyday for two weeks and this is all I get? Kyree had never had a legal job before, so he didn't know anything about how checks were broken down. Hell, he was expecting something around 300 dollars at least. "Man this is bullshit! A black elderly woman sat at the bus stop next to Kyree, looking at him through thick glasses as if he were crazy. When Kyree got home, he was surprised to see Roslyn soundly asleep in her bed.
"Roslyn! Kyree whispered loudly. "Roslyn! he said again, shaking her.
"Huh? she said, waking from her deep sleep, "W¦What is it, Kyree?
"Da hell is you doing in bed?
"I'm fucking sleeping, what does it look like?
"Don't get smart with me, Roz. Why aren't you at school?
"Because I'm tired, Ky, Roslyn said, rolling onto her side, "I'm tired and I need some damn rest. I've been busting my ass working, going to school and taking care of Darent. I just need some damn rest, Ky so please¦let me be. Kyree just shook his head and got prepared to take a shower. The relationship between Kyree and Roslyn was suffering to say the least. Two weeks ago, when Roslyn found out that Kyree screamed at Darent, she was furious. Kyree was just angry with the fact that Roslyn was mad at him when she was the one who had niggas coming over looking for her. Roslyn insisted that Maurice was lying about her making arrangements to see him and told Kyree that she called him and cussed him out about it. Supposedly he apologized and promised that it would never happen again. The fact that Darent seemed to know Maurice on a personal level kept Kyree from talking to Roslyn at all for an entire two weeks. The two would just go on with their day, not saying a single word to one another. Roslyn cried a couple of nights over the fact that her relationship was struggling, but Kyree would just put a pillow over his head and ignore her. Whenever he asked her if she had fucked anyone at all since they had gotten together four years ago, her answer was always no. For some reason Kyree still had a feeling that she was lying. Darent had gotten over the fact that his father had yelled at him for the first time, but he was still leery of him. Darent wouldn't talk to Kyree or hang around him as much as he did before he was yelled at. Their relationship had gone back to what it was the very first time they had met; blank stares and shy hellos. Kyree took a shower and then reluctantly crawled in bed next to Roslyn. Tomorrow I'll cash my check and by a snickers bar he sarcastically thought to himself as he tried to doze off. Moments before he fell into a deep sleep, Roslyn, who he thought was sleeping, turned over to face him and asked "Baby, do you love me?
"What are you talking about, Roslyn Kyree sighed, rubbing his tired eyes.
"Kyree, do you love me?
"Of course I love you, Roslyn. But I swear you can be a bitch sometimes.
"Kyree, I have not and never will cheat on you. Like I said, me and Maurice were friends. He came over and chilled a few times and that was it. Ask mama. She will tell you that nothing was up between me and him. Now obviously Maurice was having a hard time understanding that I had a man and never wanted him like that, and I apologize to you for that. But I'm allowed to have friends, Kyree. Besides, my girl Tasha said she saw you in the club a couple of weeks back chilling with some Puerto Rican bitch but I didn't say anything about that, did I? Kyree was caught off guard with that one. Maybe if he stayed quiet, he wouldn't have to explain why he was at the club chilling with Nicole and had been going to her house every now and then just to kick it and get high. "Kyree I love you with all my heart. You're my baby and I plan on being married to you one day. All I ask is that you trust me, Ky. Trust that your woman loves you and only you. I've been there for you when a lot of girl's wouldn't have and all I'm asking is for you to support me the same way I support you. At first, Kyree didn't want to hear what the fuck it was that Roslyn had to say. But after listening to her, he was once again reassured that Roslyn really did love him and wasn't fucking around on him. Roslyn always knew what to say to make Kyree forgive her for whatever it was that he was mad at her about. One thing that Kyree was full of was jealousy and he was slowly beginning to realize that if he didn't find a cure for his jealous ways, then he might loose one of the most incredible women that he had ever met. Roslyn's teary eyes looked into Kyree's and the two embraced in a slow, passionate kiss. Kyree knew that he loved Roslyn with a passion and never wanted to lose her, no matter how mad he got at her. Roslyn was definitely one of a kind and loosing her would be the dumbest thing a man could accomplish.
"I'm sorry, Roslyn, Kyree said with sincerity in his eyes. "I've been trippin' over nothing lately. It's just hard for me right now, you know? This fucking job, not knowing if I'ma be able to provide for you and our son; I mean that shit is fuckin' depressing.
"Baby, don't worry about it, said Roslyn, sniffling like crazy, "As long as you got me by your side you'll never have to worry about being without. As long as we both work, we'll be fine. Darent's eating and that's all that matters.
"But, Roz, I want to be able to give you and Darent the world. Not just a 10-piece bucket of chicken every other night. You guys deserve so much and it's my job to supply it for you.
"Ky, things like this take time. I can tell you that I know you're going the right direction in life, baby, just keep it up. Most niggas get out the pen and go right back into the streets to do the same thing that got them locked up in the first damn place. But not you, baby. You're on your grind, but in a genuine way. Better jobs will come, baby. I know that God has a great future planned for us but we have to be patient, baby. Patience is a virtue. Roslyn always made Kyree feel better when he was down and he couldn't love her hard enough for that. With her on his side, he knew that he would never be alone in the world again.
"I love you, baby. Thank you for puttin' up with me, said Kyree.
"And I love you too, Kyree. I always will. Thankfully, Darent had fallen asleep in his grandmother's bed that night so Kyree and Roslyn had her room all to themselves. Kisses led to touching and touching led to making love. All night, Kyree satisfied his woman in every way possible. Roslyn had come like she had never come before and more than once. That night would be a night that neither one of the two lover's would ever forget.

The next day, Roslyn didn't have to go to work nor school so he barrowed her car for the day for a special occasion. Work was a bitch as usual. Mr. Morgan, Kyree's boss, stayed harassing him all day about the things he wasn't doing and the things he could've done better. After work, Kyree headed for the nearest grocery store to pick up some flowers and a birthday cake. Thirty-five minutes later, he found himself standing at the door of 1543 Maxwell Street in Riverdale, an hour away from where he lived. Kyree gave the doorbell three long rings and breathed deeply. He wasn't sure how she was going to react when she saw him standing outside of her door. Even though they hadn't been cool for sometime now, Kyree would always visit her on her birthday and on every holiday. The old beat-up door finally unlocked and slowly creaked open. Standing on the other side of the screen was Kyree's mother, Debbie.
"Hey, mama, said Kyree with a bit of tension in his voice. Debbie stared at Kyree long and hard trying to figure out who the fuck it was calling her mama. "It's me, mama. It's Kyree.
"Kyree? said Debbie in a shaking voice.
"Yeah, mama, it's me. Happy birthday.
"Boy, what the hell are you talking about? Debbie asked, confused. Kyree felt bad for his mother. Ever since his father had died, she had become a totally different person. A person cursed by the repercussions of smoking crack. Debbie had wrinkled dark skin and a short, slim body. Her hair was short and gray and her face looked to be a hundred years old.
"Mama, today is you're birthday. Did you forget? Debbie moved her jaw around in a circular motion as she thought to herself is today my damn birthday?
"Oh my goodness, said Debbie, "That must be the reason why the phone rang more then usual today. Kyree just shook his head.
"Can I come in, mama?
"Sure, baby, she said, opening the screen for her son. When Debbie first got on the glass dick, she began to cuss the world for all of her problems. The crack eventually led her to believe that Kyree was the cause of all of her problems too, even though he had nothing to do with them. Kyree was only fourteen when his mother started abusing crack, and the way she began taking out all of her frustrations on him, caused him to distance himself from her. At the age of fifteen, Kyree thought that he hated his mother. One night she came into his room cursing at him for letting his father die and Kyree couldn't take it no more. He cursed his mother back, then packed his bags and never came home again. From then on, Kyree and his mother never talked. It wasn't until Kyree turned 22, that he realized his mother was his mother, regardless of what she did to him and he was supposed to love her no matter what. Debbie and Kyree still weren't the best of friends, but they talked whenever Kyree decided to come by and see her, which was usually about four times a year. Kyree took a seat on the same couch that he grew up watching TV on and looked around his childhood home. Everything still looked the same. The place was small and raggedy. The wallpaper was pealing off of the walls and the floor was littered with empty cups, bowls, and cigarette ashes.
"Do you want something to eat, Kyree? Debbie asked, walking towards the kitchen.
"No thank you, mama. Come sit down. Let me talk to you for a minute. Debbie flashed a toothless smile and sat on the couch across from Kyree. Kyree hated seeing his mom look the way she did but whenever he would try to talk to her about going to rehab, she would cuss him and tell him to leave. "So how have you been, mama?
"Ain't shit changed, said Debbie, lighting a cigarette. "Just struggling to keep food in the refrigerator. That was an indirect statement telling Kyree that she needed money for food.
"Well, I brought you a cake. That's a start, right?
"Mmhm, Debbie mumbled blowing a ring of smoke from her mouth, "so how are you and Tiffany?
"Tiffany? said Kyree. "Mama, I haven't been with Tiffany for over four years now. I'm with Roslyn now, remember?
"Oh yeah, said Debbie in disgust, "that little fast-ass light-skinned bitch.
"You don't have to talk about her like that, mama, Kyree shot in a stern voice.
"That girl's no good for you, Kyree. She's fast, I know it.
"Whatever, mama, Kyree sighed, growing agitated very quickly. "I have some good news for you, mama. Would you like to hear it?
"And what is that?
"You have a grandson. Kyree didn't know how his mother would take the news, but he was hoping that it would brighten her day.
"I have a grandson? Debbie asked.
"Yup. His name is Darent. I plan on bringing him around here in the next couple of days to meet you. But if you're gonna be looking how you are now, then I don't think he'll want to”
"I'm not changing my ways for any damn body, Kyree, spat Debbie, staring at her son with a "fuck-you look on her face. "I'm tired of people trying to change me. If you're not happy with who I am well that's just too damn bad because I'm not changing for any damn body. Debbie's words almost brought tears to Kyree's eyes. He was hurt that his mother wasn't even willing to straighten herself up for her grandson's sake. Kyree couldn't do it anymore. He loved his mother to death, but she was completely gone. Love didn't live in her heart anymore and that's why she was a lonely old woman now and forever would be. Any hope of bringing out the beautiful person that she once was, was dead.
"I have to go, mama. Enjoy you're cake. Kyree tossed the cake on the kitchen table and headed for the front door.
"So you're just gonna leave me, Kyree? You're gonna leave your fucking mother on her birthday! Well if you do, don't you ever come back! You hear me? Ever! A lone tear ran out of Kyree's eye as he walked out of his mother's house and her life as well.
******
That night, Kyree lay in bed waiting for Roslyn to get home. He didn't know where she was at, but Janice and Darent were gone to so he figured that they had all went out together. Seeing his mother in that awful condition saddened Kyree. It was just terrible to see people turn to drugs for guidance instead of the Lord. Drugs couldn't do anything but worsen the situation you were in before you began taking them. If only people would wake the fuck up and realize what they were doing to themselves. Kyree had so much on his mind that he felt the need to smoke a blunt in order to calm his nerves. He thought about calling Nicole because she always had that fire at her crib but he didn't feel like leaving the house. Kyree sighed knowing he was gonna have to settle for a cigarette. Roslyn was always puffing on a cancer stick so he knew that she had one lying around somewhere. He checked the drawers and her coat pockets and found nothing. Glancing at the dirty clothes hamper, Kyree opened it up and began checking the pockets to a few pair of Roslyn's jeans. Roslyn never took anything out of her pockets before she tossed her clothes in the hamper so maybe he would find some cigarettes in there. Damn, my baby got a big booty he happily thought to himself, staring at the size 8 tag on one of her pair of jeans. As he checked the last pair of pants in the hamper, a pack of cigarettes finally fell out one of Roslyn's pockets, but with it, a piece of paper with a number on it. Kyree raised his eyebrow as he read the number to himself. He didn't recognize it and that made him even more suspicious. Being the jealous creature that Kyree was, there was no doubt in his mind that he was going to call the number and see who it belonged to. Kyree ran downstairs to grab the house phone and took it back up to his room. Probably just some lame-ass nigga who tried to holla at my boo he thought to himself as he jumped onto the bed and began to dial the number. She wasn't gonna call this nigga back anyways. She ain't that stupid. The phone began to ring and Kyree waited patiently for an answer. Getting his Sherlock Holmes on, Kyree thought back to when Roslyn wore the pair of jeans that he found the number in. Wednesday. Three days ago. He thought to himself. The phone rang one last time and went to the answer machine. What Kyree heard next sent his body temperature soaring into the sky.
"Yeah, you've reached Maurice¦A nigga can't get to the phone right now, so leave a message¦ If this is Monica¦Bitch, if you leave another message on my new shit I swear I'ma kill you
Kyree tried to stay calm but there was no way to conceal his anger. What was Roslyn doing with Maurice's NEW number? It was now obvious that she was still fucking with Maurice and Kyree had taken enough. Enough with the lies. Enough with the fraudulent "I love you's that came out of Roslyn's mouth everyday. Babymama or not, Kyree was through with Roslyn. Using his head, Kyree grabbed his coat and proceeded down the steps and to the front door. It was best that he took time to cool off before he saw Roslyn because if he didn't, he might've ended up strangling her in front of her son. Literally. Just as Kyree was getting into Roslyn's Honda, Janice's station wagon came cruising into the driveway.
"Where is he going? Roslyn said to herself as she watched Kyree get into her car and start the engine. Roslyn jumped out of her mother's car and ran towards the curb. "Baby, where are you going? I have a surprise for you! Kyree didn't even look at Roslyn. He put the car in drive and screeched the tires until he left a trail of smoke behind him as he sped off down the road. "What the fuck was that all about? Roslyn asked out loud.
"Did that boy just steal your car? Janice asked, unpacking groceries with little Darent.
"I don't think so? Roslyn said, unsure her damn self. When Roslyn got up to her room, she saw the phone lying on her bed, a tiny piece of paper lying next to it. Thinking nothing of it at the time, Roslyn tossed her keys onto her bed and removed a bra and a pair of panties from her drawer so she could go take a shower. Suddenly , the phone began ringing. Roslyn tossed her underclothes on the bed and answered the phone.
"Hello?
"Wassup, Roslyn. I see you finally decided to call me. My fault I didn't answer. I was in the shower.
"Who the hell is this? Roslyn asked, confused as a muthafucca.
"Don't play dumb girl. You just called me like five minutes ago.
"I'm sorry, man but um¦I think you got the wrong number.
"Roslyn! shouted the man on the phone. "It's Maurice! Damn, quit playin'!
"Maurice? What the hell are you doing calling me? I thought I told you” It suddenly hit Roslyn. The tiny piece of paper on her bed had a number on it. That number was Maurice's new number. The one that he gave her when she unfortunately ran into him at Burger King a few days ago and she swore to throw away when she got home. How the fuck could she forget!?
"Maurice, did you just say that somebody called you from this number?
"Uhh¦yeah? What the fuck's gotten into you, ma? Are you okay? Do you need come over?
"Why the fuck would I want you to come over, Maurice! Like I said, there isn't shit between me and you! Just leave me the fuck alone! Roslyn had tears in her eyes as she hung up the phone then pressed redial. Sure enough, Maurice answered the phone like she didn't just cuss him out and hang up on him. Kyree must have found the number and called it. That's the only explanation for the number being laid out on the bed. How could she have let this happen? When Roslyn saw Maurice at Burger King, she told him time and time again that she didn't want his new phone number. Realizing that he wasn't going to quit until she took it, she shoved the number in her pocket and promised herself that she would throw it away as soon as she got home. Roslyn ran downstairs, scooped her mother's car keys off of the kitchen counter, and ran outside. Without asking first, she hopped into her mother's station wagon and took off into the night. She had to find her man and explain to him what had happened. If she didn't, she might've never seen him again.
Chapter 7
Roslyn spent all night looking for Kyree. She had called up Riley and asked if he had seen him but Riley hadn't. She explained to Riley what had happened and he grunted like he didn't believe her. Roslyn begged Riley to call her if he saw Kyree and he reluctantly agreed to it. Roslyn tired herself out running around the city asking every nigga who she knew Kyree kicked it with if he had seen him. At 7:00 a.m. that morning, Roslyn returned home because she knew that her mother would be wanting to go to church. After cursing Roslyn out on that early Sunday morning, Janice got little Darent ready and hauled him off to church along with her. It was first Sunday so that meant that Janice would be gone all day because she always went out to eat after church and then back to her friend Marsha's house to gossip with the rest of the deaconesses. Roslyn's body wearied and she made up her mind that she was going the hell to sleep. Hopefully, Kyree would come home soon or at least call so she could explain what happened. Roslyn dragged her tired body up the steps and stretched out onto her bed. She was fast asleep as soon as her head hit the pillow.
******
Nine hours later, Roslyn awakened to the sound of the doorbell ringing. Wiping the sleep from her eyes, she slowly crawled out of bed and made her way down the steps. Please be my baby she thought to herself as she did what she could with her hair and unlocked the door. When the door swung open, Roslyn's stomach turned.
"Wassup, ma? said Maurice, standing outside of the door with a dozen roses in his hand. Roslyn was so angry that it took her a minute to spit out any words.
"Maurice? What the fuck do you think you're doing?
"What does it look like I'm doing? said Maurice, trying to invite himself into the house, "I know I've caused a few problems between you and your man so I'm making up for it. The last thing I want to see is you unhappy.
"Maurice, you can't come in here, said Roslyn, blocking his path.
"Why not? Is yo nigga here or somethin'?
"It doesn't matter, Maurice, you are not allowed in my house. Can't you see that I don't wanna talk to you anymore? I just wanted a friendship but you wanted more. When I kindly asked you to step back you stepped forward. I'm sorry, but you need to leave. Maurice listened around the house from the door frame and heard nothing but silence.
"Roslyn, he started, "I just want to make up for the drama I caused between you and yours. Can't you just give me a few minutes?
"No, Maurice! Roslyn barked. "You've made a big enough mess between me and my baby's daddy. Please just leave! The sincere look that was once on Maurice's face was quickly over taken by a look of anger and resentment. Roslyn was surely beginning to work on his nerves.
"Listen, bitch, Maurice snarled through clenched teeth, "You led me on to believe that we could've had something together. You called me all the time and you used to always tell me how much fun you would have when we kicked it together. Now you're just gonna toss me to the curb for some other muthafucca?
"Maurice, please leave! Roslyn continued to beg with tears in her eyes.
"I'm not gonna anywhere Roz, Maurice said with a mixed look of evil and lust in his eyes, "I love you Roslyn. And I'm not going anywhere until I get what's mines. Roslyn's eyes widened in fear as Maurice slammed the front door behind him and charged her like a crazed bull. She quickly turned to run for the phone but it was too late. Maurice grabbed Roslyn by her hair and tossed her to the ground.
"Da fuck up bitch! he spat as he pulled Roslyn to her feet and shoved her towards the stairs.
"Maurice, please! Roslyn begged with tears running down her face. Maurice slapped Roslyn across the face as hard as he could, then shoved her up the stairs towards her bedroom.
"How dare you not give Maurice the pussy, Maurice scowled, grabbing Roslyn by her hair and forcing her up another step. "I did everything for you and this is how your sorry ass repays me? Another slap across Roslyn's face caused blood to shoot from her mouth. Roslyn was doused in tears, begging for Maurice to stop as he continued to force her up the stairs. When she first met Maurice, he was the nicest guys in the world, like most niggas were on first impression. This side of Maurice was totally new to Roslyn. Maurice had gotten Roslyn up the stairs and shoved her into the room that he thought was hers. Roslyn had never allowed Maurice to come inside of her room because she knew that Kyree wouldn't approve of it, even though he was serving three years in prison at the time. Roslyn tried to run but Maurice grabbed her by her hair and tossed her onto the bed. When she sat up to get off, a hard punch to her mouth laid her back out on top of her sheets. Maurice climbed on top of Roslyn and began to kiss and bite all over her face. When ever she struggled to push him off, he would punch her either in the mouth or the eye to keep her still. Roslyn's nose was bleeding furiously and her eye was slowly closing up. Maurice began to kiss on her neck while unbuckling her pants. She could smell liquor on his breath, which was probably the reason why he was doing this. Roslyn got a good kick in between Maurice's legs, striking him right in the testicles. Maurice howled out in pain, placing a hand on his nuts. That would be a move that Roslyn would regret. With all his might, Maurice cocked back his fist and delivered a deafening blow to Roslyn's face. The punch knocked her out cold. Now running off of adrenaline and liquor, Maurice slid Roslyn's jeans off and began to penetrate her violently. He moaned and groaned as his big dick dug deeper and deeper inside of her love tunnel. Blood began to run down Roslyn's thighs as her attacker abused her insides. A few minutes later, Maurice released himself inside of her, enjoying every sickening bit of it. Roslyn's entire body was bloody and battered from the wounds on her face to the blood gushing from her vagina. Maurice took a few moments to gather himself then crawled to his knees, hovering over his victim's beaten body. Removing a gun which was tucked in the back of his boxers, Maurice cocked back his berretta and placed the barrel against Roslyn's forehead. If I can't have you no man will he thought to himself as he began to apply pressure to the trigger. Suddenly, the ringing of the doorbell spooked him.
"Darent, quit playing with that doorbell! Janice yelled as she walked up towards the front porch. Darent rang the doorbell over and over until Janice slapped his hand away from it then led him inside of the house.
"He sure is a livewire, isn't he? said Janice's friend, Sally, who had come over for dinner. When Janice walked into the house, she noticed a chair turned over and papers spread out all over the floor as well as roses.
"What the hell? Roslyn! Roslyn, what happened in here! Upstairs, Janice heard the sound of glass shattering. Moving Darent out of her way, she hurried up the steps and into Roslyn's room. What she saw would bring tears out of her eyes and vomit out of her mouth.
******
At seven o'clock that evening, Kyree finally decided that it was time to leave Nicole's house and head back home. Nicole had actually turned out to be a great friend. Kyree could talk to her about anything, even his problems with Roslyn. Nicole was cool with the fact that Kyree had a girlfriend who he loved. Besides, she had met a guy named Anthony and he was feeling her just as much as she was beginning to feel him. Kyree thanked Nicole for all of her help and took off. Nicole had told Kyree that he should talk to his girl first before he came to any conclusions as to what was really going on. Kyree was hotter than a little bit with Roslyn at first, but eventually cooled off and was now ready to talk to her face to face. If all went well when he got home, Kyree would even tell Roslyn about Nicole so he wouldn't have to hide their friendship anymore. Hell, Roslyn and Nicole would probably make great friends. Even Nicole's mother was cool. He had yet to meet Nicole's father because he was taking part in the war in Iraq but hopefully he was as cool as the rest of the family. When Kyree pulled up in front of Roslyn's house, two squad cars and Riley's Blazer were parked out front. What the hell's going on? Kyree thought to himself. He quickly parked Roslyn's Honda across the street and jogged back over to the house. Riley was sitting on the porch steps with his face buried in his hands.
"Yo, Riley! Kyree shouted. Riley quickly looked up and saw Kyree jogging towards him. "What the hell's goin' on man?
"Where the fuck have you been, Kyree! Riley snapped with anger in his eyes.
"What? Riley, what the fuck is going on? Where's Roslyn? Riley just shook his head. "Riley, where the fuck is”
"At the hospital, Kyree. Roslyn's at the fucking hospital. Kyree felt his stomach drop between his legs after hearing Riley's words.
"What? Riley, what the fuck is wrong with my baby! Riley looked as if he were going to cry before he spoke.
"She got raped, man. She got raped real fuckin' bad. Before Kyree knew it, he was crying and throwing up on Riley's sneakers.
"Riley, what the fuck happened to my boo? Who the fuck did this! Kyree shouted, grabbing Riley by the shoulders.
"Neighbors said they saw a man running from the house to a red escalade that was parked down the road. That's all I know about it. As soon as Riley mentioned a red escalade, Kyree knew exactly who it was. Maurice.
"Come on, said Riley, practically dragging Kyree to his Blazer, "let's let the cops handle their business and go see you're girl.
******
Kyree shot into St. Joseph's Hospital with Riley right on his tail.
"I was here earlier, said Riley, jumping in front of Kyree, "follow me. Kyree followed Riley up the stairs to the third floor. The two then hurried down the hallway, ignoring the doctor's and nurses who were asking them to slow down. When Kyree burst into the room Roslyn was being held in, he nearly fainted. Roslyn was lying in bed with all kinds of tubes in her nose and needles in her arms.
"My god, mumbled Kyree with tears in his eyes, "Oh, my god. Roslyn's face was so badly beaten, that it was almost unrecognizable at the time. Kyree tried to stop his jaw from trembling as he held his hand over his mouth. He hovered over his soon-to-be wife and gently placed his hand inside of hers. "Baby, I'm so sorry I let this happen to you, he said to a deaf Roslyn. "I'm so sorry, baby. I swear to you on my life that I'ma make this right. I'll never let this happen again, I promise. Baby, im sorry! Kyree couldn't help himself. He began crying like a six year old who just got a whipping. Tears fell freely from his face and sprinkled against Roslyn's.
"I'm sorry, baby! he cried, crumbling down to his knees.
"Get the fuck outta here! shouted, Janice who was entering the room. Her eyes filled with tears as well. "Get the fuck outta here, Kyree! This is all you're fault!
"My fault?! Kyree screamed back, "I love Roslyn! How could this be my fault!
"Because you're the one who brought all this bullshit around my house! You're nothing but a no-good piece of prison shit! Get your shit out of my house!
"I did not do this to Roslyn! Kyree shouted so loudly that his voice, squeaked. "I would never let some shit like this happen to her on purpose! What the fuck are you talking about! Roslyn started coughing and her respirator began to beep loudly. Both doctors and nurses struggled to break up the argument that was going on and to aid Roslyn.
"Get them outta here! shouted one of the doctor's brushing through the commotion to get to Roslyn. "Get these people out of here now! Two doctor's and a security guard escorted Kyree and Janice out of the hospital room and into the waiting room.
"I want you out of my fucking house by tonight, Kyree! Janice shouted, paying no mind to all the young children who were in the waiting room with their parents.
"Don't worry about it, I'll be out!
"Hey! shouted a nurse, "Officer Burton! If these two can't settle down then escort them outta the building!
"You ain't gotta do that, spat Kyree, I'm gone! Sally comforted Janice as Kyree stormed out the building. Kyree never noticed little Darent staring at him in the waiting room with tears in his eyes. How could I have let this happen? Kyree thought to himself. Kyree knew that Maurice was a piece of shit when he first heard the fucking name. Now Kyree felt just awful about everything that happened between him and Roslyn. He endlessly accused Roslyn of cheating on him with Maurice but the entire time she was telling the truth about it never happening. If Maurice had to rape Roslyn in order to get some, then it was obvious that she wasn't giving him any. Kyree tried to gather himself as he slowly climbed into the passenger side of Riley's Blazer. The two friends said nothing as they looked into each other's teary eyes. All Kyree wanted to do was raise a loving family and enjoy life to the fullest. Why wasn't God letting that happen? Riley stared deep into Kyree's eyes. It was as if the two were communicating through stares. Kyree stared back and shook his head back and fourth. Riley knew that Kyree was trying his hardest to stay on the straight and narrow, but something had to be done. Slowly, Riley reached under his seat and brought a brand new 9 millimeter berretta into view. The gun glistened off of the bright moonlight, shining like an unholy star. Letting the cold steel warm in his hands for a few moments, Riley then extended the gun out to Kyree. Kyree stared at the gun blankly for a few moments. Getting into some bullshit was the LAST thing that he needed and the FIRST thing that he promised himself never to get into again. He had two strikes on him and couldn't risk getting into any drama AT ALL. But someone put their dirty hands on his family and that was breaking the fucking rules. Taking a long, deep breath, Kyree slowly accepted the gun from Riley. The cold steel sent a haunting chill up Kyree's spine as he wrapped his hand around it and fingered the trigger. Rather he wanted to or not¦it was time to ride.
Chapter 8
Forgive me Lord for I am about to sin
"All she had to do was give me the pussy and none of this shit would've happened, said Maurice reclining back on Monte's couch to smoke a blunt. Monte owned a little townhouse over on 8th and Marshall. The town home was plushed out. On the floors were cream carpets and the couch and loveseat were a smooth baby-blue leather. The walls consisted of nothing but posters of nude models and Japanese swords that Monte often collected. A couple of them had actually been used to slice a few niggas up.
"Did you really have to rape the bitch, Reese? Monte asked, pulling the cap back on a beer and taking a seat across from Maurice.
"You just don't understand, Monte. Man, I thought I had somethin' goin' wit Roslyn. We was kickin' it for like a year almost on the daily. I knew she had a nigga on lockdown but I figured that it wouldn't take me long to make her forget about his ass. Obviously I was fucking wrong. After all the money I spent on that bitch, she owed me some pussy. That trick got what she deserved. Monte screwed up his copper-colored face and ran his hand over his dreads.
"Are you serious, Reese? If my facts are straight, Roslyn never asked you to buy shit for her. Matter of fact, she insisted that you didn't. If she wasn't gonna give you the pussy then you should've just quit right then and there. I mean¦the bitch is fine, but she ain't all that to be raping and shit.
"I love that girl though, Monte, said Maurice with sincerity in his eyes.
"So¦you show her by raping her, then beating her into a semi-coma?
"Would you shut the fuck up about the rape shit?! snarled Maurice. Monte had mad love for Maurice. They had been best friends since they met in second grade. Monte looked at Maurice like the older brother that he never had. He could tell that his man needed his help so he was going to be there for him.
"Look, Reese. You fucked up, my nigga. You raped a bitch who knows your phone number, where you live, and who your peoples is. Seeing how you didn't put a slug in the bitch's head, you know she's going to squeal as soon as she comes to. For goodness sakes, you even busted a trace of evidence inside her pussy. You needs to lay low for a while son. Get the fuck outta town. I'll hold down the operations while you're gone.
"I can't just leave the hood like that, Monte, said Maurice, shooting up to his feet, "these niggas need me. Andre and Fate will be two loose cannons if I ain't here to keep them niggas in line.
"I can control them niggas, Reese, trust. You might be the boss dawg around this muthafucca, but niggas know how Monte gets down. If anybody in the click tries to pull some scheming-ass bullshit because you're gone, I won't hesitate to murder them. Trust me, nigga, I can hold shit down. Maurice was somewhat skeptical of letting Monte hold the click down if he had skipped town for a while. Monte was a smart man, no doubt, but he also was a hothead. It didn't take much for him to loose his mind and shoot up somebody and they mama. But Monte was right. Reese had punked out and didn't finish the job after he had raped Roslyn. The sound of the doorbell ringing brought him out of the demonic mind state he had entered and back to reality. He was about to kill the woman that he claimed he loved. Now, there was evidence all over the place that could have him locked up for many years to come on a rape charge. Maurice wasn't feeling that at all. He had no choice but to lay low for as long as he had to.
"Alright, Monte, said Maurice, blowing a ring of smoke from his mouth, "I guess you're right. I gotta get my pretty ass the fuck up outta here. Do me a favor?
"Yeah, wassup, said Monte.
"Go to Shayln's house and tell her that Maurice needs the chicken from the pot. You remember where she lives, right?
"32nd and Laurence, true?
"True. She's gonna take you to her basement and lead you to about twelve ki's. Meet me back at my spot with the weight, ight?
"I got you, Reese, said Monte, standing to his feet. "You just be careful, ight? Maurice laughed.
"Nigga, don't worry about me. I'll be fine.
"I'm serious, Maurice, shot Monte, embracing his boy in a hug, "you've been like a big brother to me for as long as I can remember. If somethin' happens to you¦I'm not gonna know what to do.
"I'ma be coo, ight, Monte? You just make sure yo ass is at my crib in an hour. I gotta get the fuck up outta here ASAP.
******
Riley pulled his Blazer up in front of Roslyn's house and killed the engine. Before the car was even in park, Kyree was out on his feet and rushing up towards the house. A couple of cops were still inside of the house, just making sure everything was safe and in place.
"Excuse me, who are you? asked one of the policemen as Kyree tried to make his way up the stairs to Roslyn's room.
"My name's Kyree Warner. I live here, said Kyree. The cop looked at him strangely for a moment before he spoke again.
"I don't recall Ms. Sutherland having a son, shot the cop, blocking off Kyree's path up the stairs.
"That's because I'm not her son, Kyree spat back with a little more attitude then he meant to. "Roslyn is my child's mother and I've been staying here with her for a while now. Now if you will excuse me, I need to run upstairs and get a few things for Roslyn. Before the cop could say anything else Kyree swiveled left and ran up the stairs. When he got to the top of the steps he stopped short at Roslyn's closed door. Before he entered, he took a deep breath and readied himself for whatever he would see inside. As soon as he pushed the door open and flicked on the light, his stomach churned violently. The velvet sheets on Roslyn's bed were covered with dry, smeared blood. It looked as if someone had been murdered in the room. Roslyn's teddy bears, clothes, and CD's were scattered all over the floors and the window at the rear of the room was smashed out. Tears welled up in Kyree's eyes as he took in the horrific scenery. Before he could make it to the bathroom, he vomited again, this time, all over his own shoes. Kyree took a few moments to get himself together and then began searching for Roslyn's cell phone. He checked every drawer and counter surface in the room but found nothing. Kyree then looked at the blood-stained sheets on the bed. He didn't want to touch them but it was imperative that he found Roslyn's cell phone. Thinking between the lines, Kyree dropped to his knees and scanned the floor under the bed. Slightly lying under what looked to be a pair of his draws, rested a small plastic device. Kyree grabbed the cell phone and quickly shot out of the room. Ignoring the police officers as he made his way out of the house, Kyree promised himself that he would kill all responsible for what happened to his future wife Roslyn.
"You got it? asked Riley as Kyree climbed back into the car. Kyree didn't respond. The cell phone in his hand was evidence enough. Kyree scrolled through the phonebook in the cell until he came up on the name Sasha. He quickly pressed send then placed the phone against his ear. After what seemed to be four of the longest rings that Kyree had ever heard in his life, a ghetto-ass hood rat voice answered the phone.
"Wassup Roslyn!
"This isn't Roslyn. This is her man, Kyree. Is this Tasha?
"Kyree? Why are you calling me? Where's Roslyn? Tasha asked.
"Roslyn's been raped. She's at St. Josephs if you want to go see her. But before you do, I need to know where Maurice lives.
"What? shouted Tasha, confused. "What do you mean she got raped?
"Maurice raped her. I know you know him because Roslyn's told me you do. She even said that you had a thing for him at one time or another. Can you please tell me where he lives? So many things were going through Tasha's head that she forgot to give Kyree an answer. "Tasha! Kyree shouted.
"Oh, my god, sighed Tasha with tears in her eyes, "um¦Reese lives um¦Reese lives¦
"Hurry the fuck up! Kyree shouted.
"Okay, don't fuckin' yell at me! she shouted. "Reese lives on 54th and Mason in those town homes at the end of the block. I can't remember the exact apartment number but it's on the west end of the lot. You can't miss his Escalade. Without a simple thank you, Kyree flipped the phone closed and instructed Riley where to go. As Riley sped through the city, Kyree sat calmly; death in his eyes, berretta in his lap.
******
"This nigga Maurice is kind of a big deal, ya know what I mean? Riley asked Kyree. Kyree didn't respond. He kept his eyes on the road. "I mean¦from what I know, he's got a lot of friends. He's connected wit some of the craziest killas in town.
"Da fuck you tryna say, Riley? Kyree snapped, keeping his eyes on the road.
"All I'm tryna say is if you don't want to do this¦you don't have to. You my nigga, Kyree, and Roslyn's my homegirl. I know you're tryna stay on the straight and narrow so if you want, I'll gladly handle this business myself so you don't have to.
"I can handle my own business, Riley, Kyree shot, "I don't need anyone to do anything for me.
"I know that, Ky. All I'm saying is I'm built for this kind of shit. You ain't a street nigga no more. I know what you're trying to accomplish in life and I don't want you risking your future over this shit. I'm just trying to” Riley's statement was cut off by the sound of Kyree cocking back his gun as they drew closer to Maurice's place of residence. It was then that Riley knew there wasn't any talking him out of this. Kyree was ready for war.
******
Maurice placed his two remaining kilos of cocaine in a black duffle bag and shuffled back out to his living room. He tossed the bag onto the couch next to another duffle bag which was full of money; $250,000 dollars to be exact. While putting on his black leather jacket, Maurice heard a strange buzz in the air which sounded a lot like a vibrator. Looking around the living room, he noticed his glowing cell phone dancing around his kitchen counter. Damn, I forgot that shit was on vibrate he thought to himself. Maurice didn't recognize the number, but he decided to answer the phone anyway.
"Hello?
"Baby! shouted someone on the other line.
"What the fuck do you want, Tasha? Maurice said, sighing loudly into the phone.
"Where are you at, Reese? Tasha asked in a panicked matter.
"Why do you ask? I don't feel like fuckin' you right now. I'm busy.
"I don't want any dick, Reese! Kyree is own his way to find you! You have to leave right now!
"What? Maurice said, not knowing what Tasha was talking about.
"Kyree! Roslyn's boyfriend! He's coming for you! Probably to kill you! What Tasha was saying suddenly clicked in Maurice's head.
"What do you mean he's coming for me? This muthafucca don't know where I fuckin' stay.
"I told him where you lived, Tasha said as if she had done a good deed for Maurice.
"Fuck you mean you told him? Why the fuck would you tell my enemy where I lived, Tasha!
"Because I ¦I don't know, baby, Tasha said, beginning to cry, "I heard that Roslyn had gotten hurt and I was mad, but at the same time, I don't want to see you hurt and¦I'm¦I'm just confused right now. Maurice slapped his forehead then ran his hand across the waves on his head in distress.
"Out of all the dumb bitches I know, you have to be the dumbest, Tasha, Maurice said angrily.
"Maurice? Did you really hurt Roslyn like that? Tasha asked in a trembling voice. Maurice didn't bother to answer. He flipped his cell closed and stuffed it into his coat pocket. If any of what Tasha had said was true, then he had to get the fuck out of the house ASAP. Maurice pulled his nine from under his coat and cocked it back. He then stuffed it back into his pants and grabbed the two bags that he would need for the long journey ahead. After taking one last peak at the house to make sure he didn't forget anything, Maurice switched off the lights and bolted out the front door. The cold night air sent a chill down his spine as Maurice stepped outside and scanned up and down the block, making sure the coast was clear. The block was dark and calm. Maurice locked the front door and hurried to his Escalade which was parked adjacent to the curb in front of the town house complex. While stuffing the bags into the back of the truck, headlights behind Maurice appeared, causing him to spin around and reach for his waist. The lights were too bright for him to see whose car was approaching him so he drew his weapon and readied himself for whatever popped off next. Maurice's heart rate slowly calmed when Monte's Hummer pulled up behind his truck.
"Put that shit away, homeboy! shouted Monte as he jumped out of his truck, "what's got you hot in the ass, baby? Maurice sighed in relief.
"Shit, I guess I'm just a little paranoid, Maurice said, wiping a bead of sweat from his forehead.
"Cool out, player. Everything's gravy, Monte reassured him.
"That bitch, Tasha just called me. Talkin' about she told that nigga Kyree where I live and shit.
"What? Monte shot, "The fuck you mean she told him where you lived? Ain't that Roslyn's baby daddy?
"Hell yeah, that's her baby daddy. Why Tasha would rat a muthafucca out like that is beyond me. Then the hoe had the nerve to call me and tell me that she ratted me out. Maurice shook his head. "That's why I need you to run by and clap that stupid bitch as soon as you get back into the hood in the morning. She's useless now that her pussy has gotten old.
"No doubt, Monte said, noting it in his mind.
"Anyway, let's get the fuck up outta here, Maurice said, walking around his Escalade to climb into the driver's seat.
"Let me drive, Monte said, "It ain't like you know where I'm taking you, Reese.
"No one drives the Escalade but me, Monte. Just tell me how to get there. Maurice was always stingy when it came to riding his escalade.
"Suit yourself, Monte said, shrugging his shoulders and climbing into the passenger's seat.
As soon as Riley swung the truck onto 54th, he spotted two men climbing inside of a cherry Escalade which was sitting under a street light at the end of the block.
"Is that the truck? Riley asked, pointing down the block. Kyree peered down the street and surely enough saw Maurice's Escalade sitting on the right side of the block near the corner of Mason.
"That's it, Kyree said, readying his gun, "and I'm pretty sure that was him getting inside the truck.
"You sure you wanna do this? Riley asked Kyree one last time. Kyree looked at Riley with eyes full of anger, but also sadness, and said "I'm sure. With that being said, the game was on. Riley killed the lights and floored the gas pedal.
When Maurice started the engine, the stereo system came on, drowning out any sound outside of the truck. Monte relaxed his body, closing his eyes and nodding his head to the bass-booming sounds of Lil' John's latest single.
"Can I hop on highway 95 to get onto 225? Maurice tried to shout over the music.
"What? Monte asked, opening his eyes to turn down the stereo. It was then that a movement in the rearview mirror caught his attention. Monte turned to look out the rear window and saw a white truck speeding up the street behind them. Riley smashed his foot onto the brakes, causing the tires to screech as he pulled up to the side of the Escalade. In what seemed to be in slow motion, Maurice turned his head to the left to look out his window. The only thing he saw was Kyree's shiny berretta hanging out the window and aimed directly at his face. With only about five feet between him and Maurice, Kyree held his breath and squeezed back on his trigger. Kyree's pistol rattled to life, lighting up like the sky on the 4th of July. Several bullets crashed through Maurice's window and dug into his flesh. Maurice's body shook violently as bullet after bullet tore off chunks of his face and torso. Monte jumped out of the truck, pulling his gun and cocking it back before he even hit the ground. Tiny pieces of brain were clung onto Monte's face but he couldn't let that stop him. Without hesitation, he swooped around the back of Maurice's Escalade and fired of several shots into the back window of Riley's Blazer. Riley ducked down and pulled the car off as Kyree switched his gun into his left hand and fired towards the back of Maurice's truck. Monte dived from behind the truck and shot at Riley's Blazer as Riley peeled the corner and sped off into the night. Monte was going to pursue his best friend's murderers but had caught a bullet to his leg when he dived out of the car. The echoes of thunderous gunshots finally vanished into the air and Monte slowly drifted out of murder mode. The beast in his eyes fainted away and was replaced by salty tears. Monte slowly dragged himself to his feet and stumbled towards Maurice's window. Monte began to cry uncontrollably when he saw the remains of his best friend splattered all over the interior of the car. Maurice's entire face was gone, leaving nothing but a twisted mural of flesh, blood, and brain matter in its place. His body was laid out across the entire front seat, leaking with blood. Maurice was all that Monte had in the world. He was the only nigga who didn't fear the deranged young man and the only one who ever understood him. Monte had plenty of men under him who would now abide to his every word, but they still weren't people who would ever consider Monte a friend. The sound of sirens approaching in the distance alerted Monte that it was time to move.
"I promise you I'll revenge you, brother. Monte whispered, holding onto Maurice's bloody hand. "I promise. Within seconds, Monte was back in his bullet-ridden Hummer and struggling to speed off into the night. He had to go see his man to get stitched up.
"Dear Lord¦I know I promised you that I would stay on the straight and narrow, but I had a situation. God, this man raped the mother of my child and beat her like a slave. I tried to hold back my anger but it was useless. Lord, I'm trying to be a good man but the world keeps testing me. If I didn't shoot that man, he probably would have come for me next in fear of me retaliating with brutal force because he raped the one I loved. I pray that you forgive me for that awful sin I committed, Lord. I didn't want to kill him but he brought serious harm to my family and I felt it necessary to defend the ones I love. Besides, at the end of it all it would have been me or him anyways, right? Thank you for listening, Lord. Amen.
Chapter 9
Three days had passed and Roslyn was finally cleared to be released from the hospital. Her face was still swollen pretty badly, as well as her vagina, but a good amount of bed rest would be sure to heal all of her physical wounds. Kyree wasn't able to stay by Roslyn's side day and night in the hospital like he wanted to because it was a must that he worked. Janice had kicked him out of the house and had threatened to file a restraining order against him if she ever saw him within 100 feet of her home again. Riley had been allowing Kyree to stay with him but let it be known that Kyree had to get a place of his own and soon. One thing that Riley valued was his own space and though Kyree was his boy, he was violating the code. That morning, Janice was sitting in the hospital room with Roslyn, helping her get dressed, when Kyree knocked on the door and strolled in. Both Roslyn and her mother turned to look at him.
"Hey, baby, said Roslyn in a raspy voice, flashing a half-smile.
"Hey, Kyree replied dully, keeping his eyes on Janice who was grilling him with a passion.
"I thought I told you to stay away from my daughter? Janice shot, not even trying to hide her disgust for her daughter's "used-to-be boyfriend.
"Mama, leave him alone, said Roslyn, "you know damn well what happened to me wasn't his fault.
"The hell it wasn't, Janice fired, "It had to have been one of his hoodlum friends that did it, Roslyn. You didn't have a single problem with anyone until this¦animal was released.
"Animal? Kyree spat getting heated. "How dare you say some shit like that about me, Janice? I love Roslyn with a passion. Do you really think I would want something like this to happen to her?
"You don't love my daughter! Janice retorted, "Roslyn can do so much better than you. She needs a real man in her life. Not some little boy who mops floors at a taco joint. Speaking of real men, Roslyn, whatever happened to that young boy you used to talk to? What was his name¦Maurice? Kyree's blood temperature shot to a thousand degrees. A demonic presence became apparent in his eyes as he clinched his fist and grinded his teeth together. Roslyn's eyes grew wide as if she knew exactly what Kyree was thinking.
"Um¦mama, can you give me and Kyree a minute, please? Roslyn asked, standing from the bed.
"Hell no, I can't! Kyree, you need to leave! Janice barked, pointing him back towards the door. Kyree stood still trying his fucking hardest not to run up on Janice and crush her windpipe.
"Mama, please! Roslyn shouted. Janice turned to face Roslyn to say something to her but held back when she saw the tears forming in her daughter's eyes. Roslyn had been through a lot and knew that she loved Kyree deeply, but she still couldn't stop herself for blaming him for what happened to her daughter. But not wanting to hurt her daughter any further, Janice would allow her some alone time with the love of her life.
"Five minutes, Roslyn Janice spat.
"Five minutes, Roslyn repeated. Janice shot Kyree a more-than-dirty look as she walked past him and out of the room. When Roslyn looked back at Kyree, he was still standing there frozen with his fists clutched tightly.
"Baby, said Roslyn as she walked up on him and kissed him on the lips, "let it go, papa. I know what you're thinking and it's nothing like that. Kyree tried to fight it, but he couldn't stop himself from tearing up. Roslyn knew she had to talk to her man before she ended up losing him over some bullshit. "Kyree, please sit down, she insisted trying to guide him to a chair next to the hospital bed. Kyree didn't budge. Too many things were running through his mind and he didn't know what to do or say to anyone. Janice's words about Maurice had hit him deep. Once again he found himself unsure as to rather or not Roslyn had fucked with Maurice like that or not. But if he had to rape her to get him some, then Roslyn must have been telling the truth about never fucking him, right? "Kyree, please sit down, baby, Roslyn insisted again, "I know what you're thinking and I want you to know that it's completely untrue. Feeling a little faint, Kyree figured the best thing to do would be to sit down so he finally obliged to the idea. "Now listen, baby, Roslyn started as Kyree planted his ass in the uncomfortable chair, "me and Maurice had been good friends at one point. Yes, he came over the house a few times and my mother did take a liking to him. More then likely because he gave her money every time she asked for it. Baby, when Maurice tried to come on to me I told him straight up that you were my man. When he kept trying, that's when I stopped seeing him. Eventually he apologized and I felt it was sincere so I forgave him. But trust me, never once did we”
"I know Maurice did this to you, Kyree shot, cutting Roslyn off. Roslyn eyes grew wide in surprise. Yesterday was the first day she had spoken to anyone since the incident and she hadn't told anyone who it was that raped her. When she was questioned by police, she told them she didn't know the guy who had done it. Roslyn turned around and looked at the door making sure no one had been ease dropping.
"I¦I thought nobody knew? she said, taking a seat on the edge of the bed.
"I knew, Kyree shot. "Did you tell the police anything yesterday? Roslyn took a few moments to answer.
"No.
"Why not? Kyree questioned, "Are you trying to protect that muthafucca or somethin'?
"Lower your voice, Kyree, shot Roslyn, checking the door once more. "No, I'm not trying to protect him. I've never fucked with the police, you know that.
"You ain't got no reason not to cooperate with the pigs, said Kyree.
"Well fine, I'll tell them, okay! Roslyn said a little louder then she meant to.
"No need, said Kyree, looking away from her.
"What do you mean no need, Ky? Kyree looked into Roslyn's eyes wanting to see her reaction after saying this.
"Maurice is dead, Roslyn. The look in Roslyn's eyes said it all. It was a mixture of sadness, but also satisfaction.
"Are you serious, Ky?
"If you thought I was gonna let that shit slide then you don't know me very well, Kyree said, tearing up.
"Baby, what's wrong? asked Roslyn, taking a seat on his lap.
"I just¦can't believe I let that happen to you, ma. Kyree looked as if he were about to break all the way the fuck down.
"Aw, baby, Roslyn said, wiping his tears away with the back of her hand, "no one could have predicted this. I'm still shocked by it myself. But trust me, we'll get over this. Together. Kyree looked up at his girl and accepted her kiss.
"But look how he did you, ma, he said, staring at the many bruises on her face. Roslyn quickly looked away, suddenly feeling ugly. Kyree turned her head back to face him. "I just feel like an asshole for letting this shit happen. I found his number and your pants and flipped the fuck out for no damn reason.
"Baby, Maurice's number was in my pants because he gave it to me when I bumped into his bitch-ass at Burger King a while back. Trust me, I told him time and time again that I didn't want it but he wasn't about to get outta my face until I took it. It was my fault for not throwing it out right away.
"Don't worry about it, ma, said Kyree, kissing her on the lips. All is good now. You won't have to worry a damn thang anymore. Kyree and Roslyn just took a few moments to hold each other in each other's arms. Lately they had been letting all the bullshit around them cause damage to their relationship. But they both knew that their love for one another was true because whenever tragedy struck, they were there for each other no matter how mad they were at each other at the time.
"Can we go home now, baby? Roslyn asked, looking her man in the eyes.
"Didn't you just hear your mama? I'm not welcome at her house anymore.
"The fuck you mean? Roslyn spat.
"Your mom is blaming me for what happened to you. I guess she thinks it was one of my niggas who did it.
"Are you fucking kidding me? Roslyn shot, "What's gotten into that woman?
"Apparently cocaine, Kyree mumbled to himself.
"Kyree, you're not going anywhere. You're coming home with me and you're coming right now.
"I'm not dealing with ya mama, Roz. Besides, I'm staying with Riley until I can get us a place of our own.
"But I wanna be with you now! Roslyn demanded.
"Baby, there's nothing I can do about that right now. Your mother's mind is made up.
"This is bullshit, Roslyn spat, shaking her head back and fourth.
"Don't worry, ma. We'll still see each other on the regular. Plus, I still got my job at Paco's. I can start saving my money and soon we can get an apartment of our own. Kyree smiled as if Roslyn would be happy with his plan. It didn't take him long to realize that she wasn't.
"Ky, I want to be with you right now, baby. I need to lie down and wake up beside you more than anything at this point in my life. Don't take this the wrong way baby but you're making next to nothing working at that dead-end job of yours.
"Well god¦damn, Roslyn, Kyree spat, feeling like Roslyn just pissed in his face.
"Baby, all I'm saying is we would be waiting forever if we ran with that plan. I'm ready to settle down with you and work on building our lives together. You know¦as a family. Kyree thought to himself for a moment. That's when a great idea slapped him across the face.
"Well, I'm sure you got a little money saved up, right? he asked, Roslyn, "Plus, you have your job at the record store. Let's just put our money together and get a place. You know¦something little for now. The look on Roslyn's face reeked of disappointment. "Damn, what is it now, Roz? Kyree asked, growing angry.
"Kyree¦baby¦Morty fired me.
"What? shot Kyree, screwing up his face.
"My mama told me about it this morning. He called and told her to tell me that I was through.
"What the fuck did he do that for? Roslyn was scared to answer him, but she knew she had to.
"Well¦I had missed a couple of days of work to catch up on my school work. I was slacking a bit and I really want my degree. I guess these last few missed days put the rotten icing on the cake.
"But you got raped! Kyree shouted, "How can he fire you for missing a few days because of something like that? Roslyn began tearing up. She felt that her man was mad at her because she lost her job. "Why are you crying, Roz? he asked.
"Because you're mad at me, she responded between sniffles.
"Mad at you? said Kyree, not knowing where she got the impression, "Baby, I'm not mad at you at all. I'm mad at the silly muthafucca you worked for for firing you. It wasn't your fault what had happened to you.
"Baby, I just can't take this shit anymore, Roslyn cried, burying her tear-covered face into Kyree's chest, "I'm just so stressed out. I don't know what to do, Ky. Kyree wrapped his arms around Roslyn and hugged her tightly. Though he was struggling with life himself, Kyree felt even sorrier for his boo. All Roslyn was guilty of was trying to create a steady life for herself. Why did it seem like some of the hardest working people in life always got their faces spat in? So what Roslyn had been missing a few days of work; she was trying to earn her teaching degree so she could actually build a career of her own. The problem with the world today is that no one cares about shit but themselves. Sympathy and compassion are phrases of the past. People were expected to function like robots and what the world seems to forget is that people are human. Nobody on this earth is perfect so why are they expected to be?
"Calm down, baby, Kyree said as he patted a crying Roslyn on the back, "everything is gonna work out fine.
"No it's not, Kyree, Roslyn cried, drooling on his hoodie, "I only have enough money saved to get us by for a little while. Mama's struggling to make ends meet her damn self so I can't depend on her to take care of me and Darent as well. Baby, what are we going to do?
"I'm gonna think of somethin', okay, ma? Kyree ensured. "You just go home and get some bed rest, okay?
"I don't wanna go home, Ky. I can't go back to the place where he did that to me.
"The police are keeping a close watch on the house so you'll be fine. I'll come through later and scoop you and lil' D so we can spend time together, alright?
"Don't leave me, Kyree, Roslyn mumbled.
"What? he asked, looking down at the top of her head. Roslyn looked up into Kyree's eyes, her own full of pain and uncertainty.
"Promise me that we'll get through this, baby, she told him. Kyree took a few moments to answer. "Baby, promise me that everything will be alright. Kyree looked Roslyn dead in the eyes.
"I promise, baby.

Riley was up was up at 8:00 a.m. serving his early morning fiends. He had wasted a lot of block time fucking with Kyree's ass and there was plenty of money that he needed to make up for. Shit was fairly slow so he pulled out a square and decided to have a smoke. Lately, Riley had been doing a lot of thinking. He had been in the streets all his life and for the first time wondered if there was something better out there for him. All he knew was the ghetto. He hadn't gone one day in his life without having a city building sitting dead in his face. Just once he wanted to explore the world and see what life was like outside of the struggle. Riley's thoughts were interrupted when a tinted black Navigator on black on black 23's pulled up to the curb in front of him. He leaned his back against the brick wall behind him and exhaled a cloud of smoke as he watched Kingdom's right-hand man hop out of the truck. Rocco towered over six-foot-five and weighed what seemed like a ton. he had rough tar-colored skin and a shiny bald head. His face was always twisted up like he was ready to kill a nigga at anytime. Usually he was. Rocco was a beast of a man who was hardly ever tried in the streets. If his presence didn't intimidate a nigga, then his record did. Rocco had laid many niggas down in his day. He was a ruthless killer who showed sympathy to no man. Though Riley respected him, he knew like everyone else that Rocco was an asshole; a cocky son-of-a-bitch who stayed feeling himself like it was him who was in Kingdom's place.
"What's good, Riley? Rocco said, approaching the young soldier.
"Ain't shit, Rocco. Just out here serving these heads.
"I can dig it, Rocco replied. "What you smokin' on?
"Just a square. Rocco screwed his face up at the cigarette.
"Anyways, Kingdom wanted me to come out here and tell you what the plan was for tonight.
"What plan? Riley asked.
"Didn't I just say I was out here to tell you what it was?
"My bad, Rocco, Riley said, taking a hard pull on his cigarette.
"Kingdom's been setting up a little somethin' on the low. Only his best men will be a part of it. Everyone else will never even know about it.
"What's that gotta do wit' me? Riley asked, blowing smoke from his mouth, "I'm just your average soldier.
"You were an average soldier. You've been bumped up to general. Everything from here to 59th is under your command.
"Word? Riley said, growing excited.
"I wouldn't lie to you, Riley. You're a smart young man and your thieving game is hella-crazy. That's the reason you've been selected to take part in this job.
"Hell yeah! shouted Riley, happy to finally be moving on to bigger and better things. "So what's the job, Rocco?
"That I can't tell you right now. First, the all principles will have to be set up. The meeting's goin' down in the basement of the old warehouse off of Xavier and York, right next to the lake at midnight. Tell nobody about this and come alone. If word gets out that you put the bizz on the streets, I'll murder you, got me?
"Ain't shit to worry about, Rocco, Riley said calmly.
"There better not be. Rocco proceeded back inside of his truck and sped off. Riley was ecstatic that he was coming up in the world. Well¦at least in the hood. Being general wouldn't be an easy task, but it was much better than being a soldier. His money was going to be longer and his power was going to be greater. All the thought about maybe changing his ways went straight out the window as Riley happily strolled down the block to celebrate with one of his local bitches who lived a short ways away. He was so caught up in the moment that he never noticed the men sitting in the black van watching his every move.

Kyree walked into Hot Spins with a bitter look on his face. Passing by the CD shelves, he headed straight for the front counter where a young lady chewing the hell out of a piece of bubble gum was standing.
"I need to speak to Morty, Kyree shot. The young lady looked at him as if he were crazy, still smacking on her gum.
"And who are you? she asked rudely.
"Who I am doesn't matter. Just get me Morty. The young lady grilled Kyree for a few more moments before she rolled her eyes and reluctantly walked into the back. Kyree impatiently tapped his fingers on the counter as he waited to talk to the manager. Walking up and down the aisles were a few school kids, plotting on who was going to stuff the CD's in their backpack. A few moments later, the young lady came back out with a short, fat black guy on her heels.
"You Morty? Kyree asked.
"That's right, said the short man, sizing up Kyree, "may I help you?
"My name's Kyree. I'm Roslyn's husband. She told me that you had her fired recently. Morty rubbed his chin as if he didn't know what Kyree was talking about for a moment before he answered.
"Ah, yes, Roslyn. Well, Kyree, Roslyn has missed several days of work and I'm simply not having it. This is a business we're trying to run here.
"But can't you understand her situation? She's struggling to make ends meet and is trying to get her degree at the same time. Can't you show her a little sympathy? Morty giggled to himself.
"That's not my problem, young man. Everybody goes through shit in their lives. The world doesn't stop because Ms. Roslyn is having "hard times. Kyree shook his head.
"Roslyn has a kid to take care of and she's barely seeing any money out this muthafucca. She was recently raped and really has it bad right now. Would it really be that unreasonable to give her her job back? She really needs it, Kyree pleaded. Morty took a second to think about what Kyree was saying. He hadn't been aware that Roslyn had been raped and he really never had any problems out of her accept for her absences. He probably would have rehired her¦if she would have given him the time of day all of those times he tried to holla at her and was quickly turned down.
"I'm sorry, young blood. Roslyn ain't workin' here no more. This is a business and I cant conduct business when my employees decide that they don't wanna come to work. Kyree sighed deeply as he balled his fist together.
"You call this working? he said, pointing at the young lady who was now text messaging someone on her cell phone.
"Deja, get off the phone! Morty hollered.
"So you're really not going to rehire who I know was the hardest working employee you had? Kyree asked sincerely. Morty plainly shook his head back and fourth. "Alright, said Kyree. Before he left, he made sure to turn over every CD shelf in the store and stomped on as many CD's as he could, breaking them into pieces.
"You're gonna pay for that shit, muthafucca! shouted Morty as Kyree made his way to the front door.
"Fuck you, ya ol' fat-ass sack of shit! You probably just sour because my boo Roslyn wouldn't give yo' punk-ass any pussy. Kiss my nuts, bitch! Kyree spat on the floor then turned and left the store.

"You're late. Spat Mr. Morgan as Kyree walked through the front door ten minutes after his shift had started.
"Sorry, Mr. Morgan, said Kyree. "It won't happen again. Kyree went to walk around the front counter and into the back but was stopped short when Mr. Morgan cut off his path.
"This is the second time you've been late this week, Kyree, Mr. Morgan shot with fire in his eyes.
"I know, sir. It's just that I've been going through a lot lately and I'm trying to set everything straight all at once.
"Does it look like a care? Mr. Morgan snapped, "Kyree, this is a business. Problems outside of work, stay outside of work. I feel sorry for whatever's going on in your life but when it's time to work, you better have your ass here on time, you got me? Before Kyree could find the balls to slap his boss across the face, Mr. Morgan turned around and disappeared in the back. Why the fuck does a man manage a taco joint any fucking ways Kyree thought to himself as he followed suit into the back.
An hour later when Mr. Morgan had taken his break, Kyree snuck into the employee lounge to make a phone call. He pulled a little piece of paper out of his wallet and dialed the number that was on it. Three rings later he got an answer.
"Hello?
"Wassup, Nicole? Kyree said into the phone.
"Hey, Ky. Whatcha' doing?
"At work, ready to bust my boss's ass, he replied. Nicole laughed.
"Don't do that, man. Then you wont have a job!
"Actually, a job is what I called you about. Is your mother still the manager at Kroger's?
"Yea, Nicole answered, "why, what's up?
"Well you said she might have a few positions opening up, right?
"That's right. As a matter of fact, she was talking about hiring a few new sales clerks this morning.
"Good, said Kyree, "because Roslyn just got fired over some bullshit and she's going to seriously need a job. You think your mother might be able to help her out?
"Uhh, I don't see why not, Nicole said brightly, "my mother likes you so I'm sure she can help you out. I told her about what happened to your girlfriend and she was deeply saddened by the news. She wanted to call you herself and give you her condolences but we still don't know your number. Kyree chuckled.
"I meant to give you that. My fault.
"It's okay, Ky, said Nicole, "I forgive you, dumb ass.
"Whatever.
"Anyways, come through after work and you and my mama can discuss some business, okay? And if Roslyn's feeling any better, bring her too. I don't want her to think I'm some horny little bitch trying to steal her man.
"I'm sure Roslyn will love to meet you, Kyree said, unsure of his own words.
"Cool. See ya later, Ky
"Ight, later. Kyree hung up the phone and immediately got back to work.
******
Roslyn felt a cold chill run up her spine the second she walked back into her house. Visions still haunted her of Maurice forcing her up the stairs and raping her violently. Janice noticed the look on her daughter's face as she stared blankly towards the top of the steps.
"Sleep in my room, baby, Janice said, hugging her daughter from behind. "I'll go pick up Darent from daycare.
"Thanks, mom, Roslyn said, turning her head to give her mother a half-smile. Janice smiled back and turned to walk back out the door.
"Mom? said Roslyn, stopping her short.
"Yes, baby?
"I hope you know that it wasn't one of Kyree's friends who hurt me. You know as well as I do that Kyree would never allow anything like that to happen to me. Janice stared blankly at her daughter for a few moments. By now she was pretty sure that Kyree wasn't to blame for what happened to Roslyn but she still didn't like him. It wasn't until Kyree was back from prison that Roslyn's life started spiraling into the ground. From what she had witnesses Kyree wasn't even trying to be a part of Darent's life and that was purely unacceptable. Kyree was a no-good nigga and Janice would look at him that way until the day she died. Without commenting on her daughter's words, Janice turned around and left. Roslyn shook her head and slowly walked down the hall into her mother's room. Roslyn loved her mother with a passion but she was distraught with the fact that her mother couldn't see the good in Kyree. Of course Kyree had his dumb moments when he decided to act out like every other nigga in the world but his love for Roslyn was genuine. In Roslyn's eyes, her mother's problem was that she always focused on the negative about somebody rather than the positive. Kyree was a broke-ass nigga who had just been released from prison. In Janice's eyes, that was enough to make him a nobody. However, Maurice had himself a little paper and always broke Janice off a little somethin' whenever he came by to visit. In Janice's eyes, that made him a somebody. If her mother wasn't her mother, Roslyn wouldn't see any difference between Janice and the rest of the gold-diggin' bitches running around. Roslyn flopped down on her mother's bed and closed her eyes. She was in need of a shower but was to weak to stand any longer. Lately, life had been draining all of her energy away and it was drastically taking a toll on her body. Stressed and confused, Roslyn began crying silently to herself. Life was taking her on a ride that she didn't want to be on and she didn't know how to get off. What hurt Roslyn the most was feeling that she was the one to blame for Kyree killing Maurice. Kyree had been trying to change his life around for the better to escape the streets and all she did was get him back into some bullshit. All she could do was hope and pray that Maurice's death wouldn't cause anymore drama between her and her man. Within minutes, Roslyn had cried herself to sleep.

"Hey, Kyree! shouted Nicole as she opened the front door for him.
"Wassup, Nicole. The two embraced in a friendly hug and then Nicole welcomed Kyree inside of her home. Nicole lived with her mother, Diane, in a fairly large house on the Lou Hall strip. The house had two stories and a gigantic basement which was full of exercising gear and a small office that Diane used to do all of her paperwork.
"Would you like something to drink? asked Nicole as Kyree flopped down on her soft leather couch.
"Let a nigga get some Kool-Aid, Kyree replied.
"Red or blue! Nicole shouted as she ran off into the kitchen.
"Doesn't matter! Kyree relaxed and took a moment to admire the house. He had been inside of Nicole's house a few times already, but he couldn't help but gasp every time he stepped inside. The ceiling was high and had several skylights that peered up into the heavens. The walls were a glossy white and were decorated by several expensive paintings and unique African masks. To the right of the large living room was the staircase leading upstairs to three large rooms. Behind the living room was the kitchen and to the right of that was a small hallway which led to the master bedroom. Kyree loved spending time at Nicole's house. He didn't feel guilty about being inside of another woman's house because he and Nicole were strictly friends. She was just someone to hang out with and talk to when Roslyn wasn't around. Nicole came out of the kitchen with a large glass of red Kool-Aid. "Thanks, girl, Kyree said, taking a sip of the cold beverage.
"Don't spill that shit, Ky. Moms will come down here and beat that ass.
"I got this, said Kyree, taking another sip.
"Heeey, Kyree! shouted Diane, coming down the stairs. Diane had beautiful caramel skin and short curly hair that glistened off any light it touched. She was in her early forties but didn't look any older than 35. Diane was just about as fine as her daughter, having an athletic body and the curves to go with it.
"How are you today, Ms. Alexander? Kyree said with a wide smile on his face. Diane was one of Kyree's favorite people. She was intelligent, hardworking, and also goofy as hell which made her fun to be around.
"Oh, I heard about your girlfriend, Kyree, said Diane, her eyes full of true sincerity, "I'm so sorry that that happened.
"It's okay, Kyree replied, "she's recovering quickly and seems to be feeling much better.
"That's good, both Diane and Roslyn said in unison.
"Did they ever find out who did it? Roslyn asked. Kyree took a moment to respond.
"They have a few leads but nothing solid. Diane shook her head.
"Well I hope they find that son-of-a-bitch, shot Roslyn.
"Me too, Kyree replied. "Anyways, did Roslyn talk to you about my request, Ms. Alexander?
"Why, yes she did, Diane said with a smile on her face, "I'll be more than happy to help your girlfriend get a job over there with us.
"Thank you, Ms. Alexander.
"Kyree, how many times have I told you to call me Diane? Kyree chuckled.
"I'm sorry, Diane. It's a habit.
"Well break it boy! shouted Diane as she trotted back up the steps, "let me go get these papers for your girlfriend. Ill be right back!
"Your mom's a trip, Kyree chuckled as he took another sip of his drink.
"Yeah, her ass is off the hook, Nicole giggled.
"I swear you guys have the most beautiful home I have ever seen.
"You really think so, Ky? Nicole asked, looking around her large living room as if she's never seen it before.
"I really do. It's so¦relaxing, you know?
"I guess it is, huh? Nicole replied. "But it's nothing out of the ordinary.
"Yeah right, spat Kyree, "I don't even have a place of my own. To me, something like this would be all I would want. Just a little somethin' somethin' to raise my family in, you know? Nicole looked at Kyree and smiled as she shook her head.
"Aren't you two ladies scared living in this nice house by yourselves?
"Not at all, said Nicole, "remember that nine that I told you about in that vase in the hallway?
"You were serious about that?
"As a heart attack! Nicole shouted. Kyree laughed out loud.
"Ya'll think ya'll some gangstas, huh? he asked in a joking matter. Roslyn broke out laughing with him. Diane came back down the steps with a yellow folder in hand.
"Alright, Kyree. Let's go over a few things to save Roslyn some time. Diane flopped down on the loveseat next to Nicole and sat the folder on the glass table in front of her.
"Hold up. I gotta pee. Kyree said as he got up from the couch opposite of them and ran through the kitchen and down the hall beside it. Diane shook her head.
"And wash your hands when your done! Kyree slammed the bathroom door and pulled out his manhood. The urine flowed freely from his penis, causing him to close his eyes and enjoy the feeling. He didn't know what it was about taking a piss, but if he had held it in for long enough, letting it all out almost felt as good as intercourse. When he was done, Kyree shook his manhood up and down and then zipped his pants back up. He flushed the toilet then began to wash his hands.
"So, how's Anthony treating you? Diane asked Nicole as they sat on the couch next to one another.
"He's treating me pretty good. I think he's the one, mama. Nicole replied.
"Not if he's just treating you pretty good, Diane sighed, rolling her eyes, "he's supposed to treat you like the queen that you are.
"Mama you knew what I meant! Nicole shouted. Kyree opened the bathroom door and began walking back towards the kitchen. As soon as he stepped foot onto the kitchen tile, he heard the front door of the house being kicked off the hinges. When Kyree saw who it was, he took a step back and placed his back against the wall of the hallway. He had recognized the intruder's face but he couldn't remember from where. Monte walked into Nicole's house followed by three humongous men all wearing demonic looks on their faces. Nicole and Diane sat frozen on the couch, their eyes bulging in fear. Monte slowly looked left, then right, examining the living room.
"Wh¦who the hell are you? Diane asked in a trembling voice. Neither Monte nor the guerillas he had trespassed with said a word. "I'm calling the police, shot Diane, standing from the couch. Monte pulled a shiny desert eagle from under his hoodie and aimed it at Diane's face across the room.
"Sit down, bitch, Monte said calmly. Diane wasn't stupid. She quickly did as she was told. "Kyree! Monte shouted out loud, "Where the fuck you at, homeboy! Kyree was sure that the sound of his heart beating out of his chest was going to give away his position. He couldn't see anything but he definitely heard a gun click right before the intruder told Diane to sit down. Unarmed, Kyree began to study his surroundings in the hallway, thinking of what to do next. "Kyree, we know you're in here! Do you remember me!? They call me Monte! I was there the night you killed my brother Maurice in front of my fuckin' eyes! One of Monte's men shut the front door as they all took a step further into the house. It finally became clear to Kyree who the intruder was. Kyree had prayed that none of Maurice's homies would come back for revenge. Unfortunately his prayers had gone unanswered. "Kyree, come out, my nigga! Stop playing games before somebody gets hurt! Monte shouted, his voice echoing throughout the house. Tears ran down Nicole's face as her mother held her tightly.
"Please get out of our house, cried Diane with tears of her own now running down her cheeks. "There is no Kyree here. Monte looked at Diane and smiled. Though his mouth was grinning, his eyes showed no sign of sympathy.
"Do I look dumb to you, ma? I wouldn't be here if I didn't know my mark was here. And I know he's still here because my guys in the back haven't informed me otherwise. So tell him to show himself before someone gets hurt. Kyree heard everything that was being said but was too nervous to make a move. If he showed himself he would for sure be dead. If he didn't, innocent people could get hurt. Kyree knew that he had to do something. "You don't wanna come out? shouted Monte. He stood in silence for a few moments waiting for an answer that would never come. "Fine. Have it your way, Kyree! Monte raised his desert eagle to Nicole's face and pulled the trigger. Nicole's neck snapped back as her brains coated the wall behind her. Diane screamed at the top of her lungs, staring at the smoking hole in what was left of her daughter's head. "Do I have to kill mommy too, Kyree! Monte shouted. Tears ran down Kyree's face as he closed his eyes and prayed to God that he was dreaming. That's when something Nicole had said came to him. Remember that nine that I told you about in that vase in the hallway? Kyree didn't expect shit to be there, but his only choice was to look and find out. He picked up the purple vase next to him that was resting on top of a small decorative table and reached his hand inside. The cold steel sent a chill up his spine as he wrapped his hand around it and dropped the vase. The sound of glass shattering caused Monte to look back towards the kitchen area just in time to see Kyree left off several shots over Diane's head towards his direction. Monte ducked as the bullets zipped over his head and collided with the heads and necks of two of his soldiers. Monte and his last remaining man aimed in Kyree's direction and fired off their weapons. Diane didn't even try to remove herself from the crossfire. She held her daughter tightly and said her last prayers as several shots, which were originally intended for Kyree, went wild and tore threw her spine. Kyree let off several more shots then took off down the hall towards the master bedroom.
"Kill that muthafucca! shouted Monte, his boy in quick pursuit. It only took Kyree a few seconds to spot a window big enough for him to jump through that led to the side of the house. He leaped onto the queen-sized bed and shot out the glass surrounding his exit. Using the bed as a spring, Kyree leaped off the mattress and glided through the broken window above the bed. Before he hit the ground, he let off three shots towards the back of the house. Monte's guy had no chance as his body hit the ground the same time Kyree's did. As soon as Kyree climbed to his feet a loud boom led to a chunk of meat being ripped off from his side. As he fell back in tremendous pain, Kyree let off his last shot towards the back of the house, putting a gaping hole where the gunman's atoms apple once was.
"Get his ass, Stokes! Monte shouted as he struggled to follow his man into the master bedroom. Stokes leaped onto the bed and jumped out of the broken window. He hit the ground, rolled, and readied his gun as he looked around for the mark. Kyree was no where in sight.
"Shit! shouted Monte, his head peaking out of the broken window. "How the fuck did this nigga get away!
"I don't know, boss, Stokes said, climbing to his feet. Stokes looked towards the back of the house and saw both of the lookouts bleeding into the ground. "He got Pat and Lamar before he disappeared. Monte sucked his teeth. This man that they called Kyree had been highly underestimated.
Chapter 10
"Ahhhh! Riley, that's too deep, baby! shouted Wanda as Riley jammed his penis deeper in her booty. The two were in bed in a doggy-style position getting there nuts in for the night. Riley paid Wanda's cries no attention as he dug the pretty dark-skinned girl's back out. Seconds before he happily climaxed inside of her, he heard the front door of the apartment being forced open.
"Da fuck? Riley said, pushing Wanda away and grabbing the gun that was lying adjacent to them on the bed. Riley cocked the pistol and walked out of the bedroom not minding to put clothes on. As soon as he stepped out of the room, Kyree crashed into him with blood all over his white shirt.
"The fuck? Kyree, what happened, nigga! Riley shouted, using all his might to hold Kyree up. Kyree was gasping for breath as his eyes were beginning to roll into the back of his head. "Kyree! Riley shouted.
"Oh, my god, Wanda trembled, placing her hands over her mouth.
"Wanda, grab my cell and call Kina Harris. Tell her to get over here ASAP!
"Shouldn't we just call an ambulance, Riley? Wanda cried as her body began to shake a little.
"No! Just do what the fuck I say! Riley spat. Wanda nodded her head and ran back into the bedroom to search for Riley's cell phone. Using all his might, Riley tossed Kyree over his shoulder and carried him into the bedroom then laid him out across the bed. "What happened, pa? Riley ripped off Kyree's shirt and noticed a good chunk of flesh missing from his left side. "Oh shit, he mumbled to himself, grabbing a clean shirt out of the drawer to place over the wound. Kyree tried to fight of the darkness but it was too overpowering. He looked Riley in the eye and whispered a trembling "save Roslyn seconds before he blacked out.
******
Roslyn was awakened out of her sleep by the sound of the doorbell ringing. She stretched her tired body and slowly rolled out of the bed. Not wanting a repeat of what happened the last time she opened the front door, Roslyn made sure that she grabbed a meat knife out of the kitchen before she greeted her guest. Roslyn felt a little better when she peaked out of the window and saw Riley standing outside.
"Riley, what are you doing here? Where's Kyree? she asked after swinging the door open.
"Roslyn, you have to come with me, Riley demanded with a straight face.
"What? What are you talking about, Riley?
"Roslyn, Riley started, "there's no time to explain. All I can tell you is that Kyree's been shot and your life might be in danger as well. I need you to come with me.
"Shot!? Roslyn shouted. "What the fuck do you mean shot? The tears in her eyes slowly began to form.
"Roslyn, please just come with me, Riley begged. The sound of a car pulling up to the curb caught Riley's attention. He turned around only to see a police vehicle pull up behind his Blazer. "Fuck, he mumbled to himself. "Okay, Roslyn, listen. You and Kyree might be in great danger. Kyree's at my house and I'm having someone treat him right now. I need you to go to my spot and stay there until we can figure out what the fuck is going on, okay? Two cops, both being white, exited the squad car and casually began to make their way towards Riley and Roslyn.
"Riley, what's going on? Roslyn questioned in a worried tone. The tears in her eyes began to flow down her face. "Is Kyree going to be alright?
"Excuse me, sir! shouted one of the policemen, walking towards Riley.
"Everything's going to be alright, Roslyn. You remember where I live right?
"Right, Roslyn trembled.
"Good. Make sure you're not followed and go over there. I have a girl named Wanda who will be expecting you.
"Sir, we need to ask you a few questions, said the closest officer, placing his hand next to his gun.
"Fuck ya'll want wit me, man? Riley spat as he turned around.
"Sir, calm down, warned the far officer.
"Man, I ain't fuckin' wit you niggas. Unless you're charging me with some shit, get the fuck out my face.
"Fuck this, mumbled the far officer, removing his pistol.
"Alright, Riley put your fucking hands up!
"What? Riley shouted, "Fuck I do? The other officer drew his weapon.
"Put your fucking hands up! they shouted in unison.
"Do what I said, Roslyn, Riley said. Roslyn nodded her head and sniffled as Riley put his hands up and walked towards the officers. The officers pounced on Riley and slammed his face into the ground.
"I hope you two fat-ass pigs gotta good reason for arresting a muthafucca like this, Riley spat as the cops struggled to handcuff him.
"As a matter of fact we do. How about murder, buddy?
"Murder? Riley questioned.
"You're under arrest for the murder of Maurice Thompson. Witnesses place that very same truck you're driving fleeing from the scene of the crime. What ya got to say now, boy? Riley laughed.
"I ain't murdered any muthafuccin' body. You muthafuccas will be kissing my ass when my lawyer's through wit” Riley's statement was cut short when one of the officers decided to kick the wind out of his chest.
"Don't hit him like that! Roslyn shouted.
"Go in the house, ma'am! one of the officers demanded.
"It's alright, Roslyn, said Riley, a drop of blood running from his bottom lip, "just do what I said, ma. Ky's expecting you. The two policemen dragged Riley to the squad car and tossed him into the back. As soon as the vehicle sped off, Roslyn ran inside to grab a few of her valuables. She had to go see about her man.
******
Roslyn knocked hard on apartment number 415 at the Kenton apartment complex. Her hair was all over her head and her clothes were wrinkled. She didn't appreciate the stares that she received from several hungry men as she made her way up and through the apartment building but a wife beater and a pair of pink booty shorts was all she had time to put on. Moments later, the door finally unlocked and opened.
"Kina? Roslyn asked the pretty brown-skinned lady who answered the door. Without answering Roslyn, the woman whipped out a pistol and took a look up and down the hallway. Roslyn jumped a little when she saw the gun but she eased a bit when the lady brought it back down to her side.
"What's your name? she asked with much attitude.
"I'm Roslyn, Kyree's girl. Riley should have told you that I was on my way. Taking one more look up and down the hall, Kina's face softened a little as she stepped to the side.
"You weren't followed were you? The woman asked.
"No. Roslyn shot, becoming impatient with the woman.
"Alright, come on in. Roslyn admired Riley's apartment as she stepped through the door. He had one long black leather couch which wrapped around the left side of the living room and a big screen television sitting up against the wall. To Roslyn's surprise, there was no carpeting on the floor. The floors were a rich oak wood that glistened off of the sun gleaming through the window panes.
"Follow me, said Kina as she led Roslyn into the back room. When Roslyn walked into the back bedroom, the tears refused to hold themselves back. Kyree lay on the bed wrapped in white bandaging with a fairly large blood stain on his left side.
"Oh, my god, Roslyn sighed, placing her hands over her mouth.
"It looks worse than it actually is, said Kina, motioning for Roslyn to have a seat in the small chair next to the bed. "From the looks of it, a bullet took off a nice little chunk of flesh. He'll survive though. Roslyn sat down and placed her hand inside of Kyree's. Kyree's eyes were closed but it didn't look as if he were sleep.
"Baby, can you here me? Roslyn said gently. Kyree didn't budge. "Baby? Kyree slowly opened his tired eyes and focused his vision on the lady hovering over him.
"Hey, baby, he whispered as if it were his dying breath.
"Baby, what happened? Roslyn asked, her tears reappearing.
"He should save his energy, Kina said, standing by the door, "come out in the hall with me and I'll tell you” To Kina's surprise, Kyree raised his hand to silence her. Considering the amount of blood that he lost, she didn't expect him to be so mobile so soon.
"Tell her to give us a few moments, Kyree whispered to his love. Roslyn shot Kina a you-heard-what-he-just-said look. Kina nodded her head. "I'll make some tea, she said as she disappeared into the hallway.
"Now, tell me what happened, Ky, Roslyn demanded. Kyree took a moment before answering. He had little to no energy left but it was imperative that Roslyn heard what he had to say.
"Roslyn, we gotta leave, bellowed Kyree.
"What do you mean we have to leave, baby? You just need to lay here and get your rest.
"You not gettin' me ma, Kyree said, a little more active, "we gotta get the fuck outta town. It's too dangerous to stay here.
"What do you mean, Kyree? Who's after you? Kyree sighed. The last thing he wanted to do was explain everything that was going on to Roslyn. Why couldn't she just listen?
"Look, Roslyn. The hood is no longer safe for us. Maurice's squad came after me. They killed one of my dearest friends Nicole and her mother as well, basically in front of my eyes. Roslyn wanted to ask Kyree who the fuck Nicole was but pending the situation, she let it slide. "Roz, all I want to do is build a family and a life with you and our son. A normal life. But that's not gonna happen if we stay here. If we stay here, we'll probably end up dead.
"We? Roslyn asked.
"You're a target just like me, ma. For all these niggas know, Maurice died because you sent the word. I'm not taking the chance of you staying in harms way. We're getting the fuck outta West County as soon as possible. Roslyn was loosing all control. Her stomach was churning and her hands were shaking. Ever since she was a child, the only thing that she ever feared was dying. She had done some grimy things in the past and worried more then anything about God sending her soul to hell when she passed away. "Ma, are you okay? Kyree asked, noticing her body began to shake.
"I don't wanna die, baby, she cried, trying to wrap her arms around Kyree's body, "please don't allow me to die, please.
"Calm down, boo, Kyree said, using all of his energy to sit up and hold his "wife. Kyree loved Roslyn dearly and he'd be damned if he let anything happen to her. It suddenly became clear that an honest lifestyle wasn't going to be a choice right now in his life. Kyree was going to get his family out of the hood and he was going to do it no matter what it took. But before he began making any plans, he had to shut calm down his baby.
"Roslyn, Kyree said, placing his hands on her shoulders. Roslyn was crying her eyes out¦almost literally. "Roslyn! he shot, shaking her a bit.
"I don't want us to die, baby, she said, sniffling as she looked up at him.
"No one's gonna die, okay? Not a one of us.
"But you just said that if we don't leave, we could end up dead. Baby, we ain't got any money to leave! Kyree ran his hand down his face and took a moment to think. Followed by a deep sigh came these words.
"Baby, tell me where you want to go?
"What do you mean where do I want to go, Kyree? Roslyn asked.
"If you could be anywhere but here, where would it be? Roslyn just shrugged her shoulders, looking as she were about to break out in a loud cry again.
"Roslyn. Think about what I'm saying to you and just answer the question, please. If God came out of the sky and told you face to face that he would scoop you up in his hand and take me, you, and Darent anywhere you wanted to go, where would it be? Roslyn didn't know why the fuck Kyree was asking her this dumb shit, but she simply decided to play along. For her man's sake.
"I don't know, she sniffled, "California? I heard it was nice and sunny there.
"California, huh? said Kyree, well I'm making the promise to you right now that me, you, and little D will be living in the California before your 21st birthday. Roslyn looked up and stared at Kyree like he was remedial.
"Kyree, there's no need to try to make me feel better, baby. Don't worry about me. I'm more concerned about”
"I'm not playing, Roslyn, Kyree shot with an intense look of seriousness in his eyes. "I swear on my life that I'll have us living in California before you turn 21. Roslyn didn't know what else to do but laugh. What the fuck was this nigga talking about?
"Kyree, baby, I turn 21 in less than a week. We're broke as a bitch, nigga! How the fuck are we gonna be in somebody's California within six days? Kyree placed his finger over Roslyn's beautiful lips to quiet her.
"Do you believe in me, Roslyn? Kyree asked with nothing but love in his eyes. Something about the look in her man's eyes caught Roslyn's full attention. What Kyree was rapping about made no sense whatsoever but she had never seen someone look more serious in her life. "Roslyn, do you believe in me? Kyree asked once more, this time with tears in his eyes. It was times like this that Roslyn couldn't control the waterworks.
"I believe in you, Kyree, Roslyn said. The two lover's tears fell freely from their faces and developed several streams of love on there adjoined hands below.
"Then trust me on this one, ma, said Kyree. Roslyn broke out laughing even though she knew there wasn't a damn thing funny.
"Kyree, don't play with me right now. I've been trapped in the ghetto my entire life. All I know is project buildings and the struggle. Getting out of the hood and ending up in sunny-ass Cali is just a mere dream of mines, baby. I can't have you playing with my heart like that right now because”
"I would never play with your heart like that, ma, Kyree said, "I'm dead-ass serious about this shit. So I ask you this: Do you trust me? Roslyn was skeptical as to what it was Kyree was trying to do. She trusted her man but there was no way she was going to get her hopes up about being in Cali next week.
"I trust you, Kyree, she replied. Roslyn threw her hands around her man and hugged him tightly. For now, all she could do was hope that her ghetto knight in shinning armor could pull off a miracle.
Chapter 11
Riley stepped out of the West County cell housing facility at approximately nine o'clock that morning. He had been held for three days for questioning and overall harassment.
"I'll see you 'motherfuckers' in court! He shouted as he and his lawyer made their way out of the building.
"Thanks a lot, Mills, Riley said.
"No, problem, Riley. Just stay out of trouble and learn to keep your mouth closed, Mills shot, referring to the rude remark Riley had just shouted out.
"No problem, Mills. I'll see you in court next week. We're gonna get these muthafucca's for putting their hands on me like that. I told you they didn't have shit on me.
"You're just lucky you had a young lady to vouch for you, said Mills. Riley's alibi was that he was visiting a female "associate who just so happened to live a block away from where Maurice was murdered that night. He simply told the courts that he was at a stop sign heading back home when he saw an unknown man walk up to Maurice's window and start firing. When he heard gunshots, he fled the scene to get out of harms way. When questioned as to why he didn't contact authorities after witnessing a shooting, Riley replied, "I live in West County. I wake up and go to sleep hearing gunshots that take police hours to respond to. The incident wasn't anything out of the ordinary to me. All I was doing was trying to get out of harms way. The courts knew that Riley's story was 100% bullshit but without a murder weapon they had nothing on him.
"Sho' ya right about that, Mills Riley said as the two began walking down the avenue. Mills shook Riley's hand and headed off for his BMW which was parked under the lower level of the facility parking lot.
"I'll call you, Riley. Remember what I said! Stay outta trouble! Mills hollered as he and his client went there separate ways. Mills had been Riley's lawyer for several years now via Kingdom. Speaking of the devil, a burgundy stretch-Escalade swooped up to the curb next to where Riley was walking. Rocco stepped out of the passenger side of the car, looking like a pro wrestler in a wife beater and jeans, and approached Riley.
"You just can't keep your monkey ass outta trouble, can you? Rocco said sucking his teeth.
"Whatever, Rocco. What is it that you need? Riley asked.
"You missed a very important meeting last week, Riley. As you can guess, Kingdom is very unhappy with you. Riley's stomach bubbled a little after hearing Rocco's statement. He hadn't had any contact with Kingdom ever since he missed that "top secret meeting and had been wondering what his consequence would be for that.
"I know. I got caught up in some shit, yo. I've been meaning to holla at Kingdom but I've been stuck up in a cell for”
"No need to explain to me, Rocco shot, cutting Riley off, "tell it to the man himself. Ike hopped out of the driver's seat and made his way to the back of the stretch-Escalade to open up the back door. At first Riley was a little skeptical about getting inside. Getting on Kingdom's bad side was the last thing any man wanted to do. He couldn't help to think that if he got inside of the car, he would be sealing his own fate. "Hop in, Riley, Rocco uttered. If Riley tried to run, he knew that he would be gunned down in a matter of seconds. He had put in much work with both Rocco and Ike and point blank, the muthafuccas could shoot. Riley's best bet was to get inside the car and hope to God that his brains would still be in his head at the end of the day. Riley took a silent deep breath and climbed into the Escalade. Rocco followed in behind him as Ike returned behind the wheel and put the vehicle in drive. In the blink of an eye the Escalade took off down the road and disappeared into city traffic.
******
Kingdom sat opposite of Riley in the stretch, smoking on a large Cuban cigar. Rocco was seated to Kingdom's left, looking like the cold-blooded killer that he was.
"Riley Tulips, said Kingdom, blowing a cloud of smoke into the air, "how art thou? Riley stuffed his hands into the large front pocket of his hoodie so Kingdom couldn't see how nervous he was.
"I'm good, Kingdom. Just having a little problem with the white man, ya know? Kingdom didn't bother to respond to Riley as he took a hard pull on his cigar.
"Do you recall Rocco informing you about a very important meeting you were supposed to attend a while back? You know, the same day I bumped you up to general?
"I do, Kingdom, said Riley trying his best not to start sweating, "but my boy's girl got raped that night and we had to go ride on a nigga.
"I don't give a fuck if ya boy's mama suffocated on a dick after a nigga broke into her house and raped her fucking throat, Kingdom shot, piercing his eyes into Riley's, "let me explain something to you, Riley; I'm not going to go into details but because of you missing that meeting, three of our top generals were murdered and four of our bakeries were robbed. I needed you to fill in for Logan's shift while he was out of town on other business. Since you weren't present to know this, I had to have Rimz fill in for Logan and we all know that Rimz isn't built to be a general. Turns out that Rimz was actually affiliated with a fellow enemy of ours and he ended up crossing us the first opportunity that he got. Now that wouldn't have happened if you would have been on the shift like you were expected to be, right, Riley? A lump big enough to clog a drain developed in Riley's throat. Beads of sweat began forming on his forehead as he suddenly felt death's shadow crawl over him.
"That's my fault, King. You know I would never intentionally bail out on you like that. You've been like a father figure to me for years and I would” Kingdom raised a hand to silence him.
"It's cool, baby, Kingdom said, blowing smoke into the air. For the first time since he got in, Riley took a look out the window and noticed that they were no longer in city traffic but on a isolated back road which led to nothing but Alcott Creek and a local dump yard.
"Da fuck's goin' on, Kingdom? Riley asked, no longer hiding his feeling that something wasn't right. The doors to the Escalade suddenly locked themselves as the vehicle continued down the vacant road. "Yo, Kingdom, what the fuck is goin' on, man! Riley shouted.
"You've been slipping lately, Riley, Kingdom said calmly, "you've been a general for a while now and we haven't even seen yo ass since your promotion. I can't have guys like that working for me. Riley shook his head and looked out the window.
"So you're gonna kill me, he asked plainly. Kingdom shrugged his shoulders.
"It's business, Riley. I'm sure you can understand. I mean, you're a business man, right? Tears began to gather in Riley's eyes. However, these weren't tears of fear. They were tears of defeat. For a while now Riley had been wondering what life would be like if he never played this unholy game. When he first started hustling back when he was thirteen, he only did it because he felt that he had too. He had no money, no education, and no future. Kyree had opened Riley's eyes and exposed him to the truth which was that there could be life after hustling. Unfortunately for Riley, he knew that he would never be able to see what that life was like. He had played the only game in life that didn't allow a forfeit. There was a good four to five feet between Riley and Kingdom so if he lunged for him, he would more than likely be dead before he touched him. "I'm sorry to do this, Riley, said Kingdom with a sincere look on his face.
"Do what you gotta do, Riley said, staring blankly into space. Riley felt like it was his time to go and wasn't going to protest against God's will. Kingdom looked over at Rocco and nodded his head. With one swift move, Rocco whipped out a silenced nine millimeter and aimed it at Riley's face.
"See you in hell, Rocco groaned as he began to apply pressure on the trigger.
Click.
Rocco looked at the gun, confused for a moment, and then pulled the trigger once more.
Click.
He got the same result.
"What the fuck's wrong? Kingdom asked, "Kill him! Rocco pointed the gun at Riley one last time and pulled the trigger. Again nothing happened. Riley wasn't retarded. He immediately jumped up and bashed Rocco in the face with a closed fist. Before he could yank the gun away, Kingdom delivered a deafening blow to Riley's temple, sending him sailing back to his seat at the back of the Escalade. Rocco aimed the gun once more and pulled the trigger. This time it shot, but strayed inches away from Riley's face and blew out the back window. Without hesitation, Riley turned around and lunged out of the broken window, bouncing of the trunk of the car and skidding into the street.
"Shit! Kingdom, shouted, "Ike, stop the fucking car! Riley had injured his leg pretty badly but if he was going to live then he had to get up. God have given him a second chance in life and he planned on making good with it. It had to have been the grace of God that jammed the gun that was meant to take his life. The stretch Escalade skidded to a stop fifty yards in front of Riley and began to back up. Running off of pure adrenaline, Riley stumbled to his feet and headed towards Alcott Creek which was on the opposite side of the steep hill to the left to him. With all the high weeds and trees, it would be a good spot for him to make his getaway. Rocco hopped out of the stretch and began to chase Riley on foot. He shot wildly at him but Riley was too far ahead to get a good aim. Riley stumbled down the grassy hill and into a tall weed garden which led to the Creek. Rocco went into the weeds after Riley firing every which way until his clip ran out.
"Riley! Rocco shouted, not able to see over the tall weeds, "where the fuck you at, Riley! Don't make this shit hard! Just give the fuck up!
"How about no, said a voice behind Rocco. Rocco turned around and saw nothing but tall green and yellow weeds. Riley jumped out of the weeds from behind Rocco and positioned his hands on Rocco's head accordingly. With one swift move, Riley twisted Rocco's head 180 degrees around his body until a sickening crunch followed by a loud snap occurred in his neck. Rocco's body limply dropped and smacked into the ground face first. Kingdom and Ike dwelled around the large weed garden. Ike had a sawed-off shotgun in hand, mad that he hadn't been able to use it earlier.
"Da fuck these pricks go? Kingdom asked, staying close to Ike. It was then that Kingdom tripped over something. Both Kingdom and Ike's temperatures skyrocketed when they looked down and saw Rocco's slain body laying face down in a puddle of mud. Ike readied his weapon but would momentarily find out that he didn't need it. All the two men heard next was the sound of the stretch-Escalade screeching away as Riley sped back into the city.
******
Kyree awakened around eleven o'clock that morning. He didn't mean to sleep in at all but a tired man is a tired man. Kyree's side was still aching but the pain was manageable now. Stretching his soar body as he yawned, Kyree then rolled over to cuddle with Roslyn. That was until he saw that she wasn't there. Darent lay next to Kyree soundly asleep but Roslyn was nowhere in sight. Seconds later, Kyree heard a door being forced open in the living room. He quickly grabbed the gun that was kept under the mattress and jumped out of bed to go investigate. Kyree poked his head out of the bedroom and saw Riley down the hall standing by the front door with desertion in his eyes.
"Riley? said Kyree as he tucked the gun in his sweat pants. Riley didn't even look at Kyree. He slowly made his way to his couch and flopped down on it. "Yo, Riley, what happened to you? Why is there blood all over yo shirt, nigga? Riley slowly looked up at Kyree who was now hovering over him. "Riley! Kyree shouted, placing his hands on Riley's shoulders. Riley took a deep breath and finally spoke.
"He tried to kill me, Ky, he said softly.
"What? Who tried to kill you? Riley took a moment before answering.
"Kingdom.
"What? Kyree asked, confused. "What do you mean Kingdom tried to kill you?
"I mean what I said! Riley shouted. "Kingdom tried to murder me about an hour ago. He had me, Ky. He had me staring down a barrel but the gun didn't go off. I mean¦that was a miracle right? The gun jammed when Rocco tried to shoot me. Riley still had a deserted look in his eyes which scared Kyree. He had never seen his boy look so distraught in his life. Kyree shook his head and ran his hand down his face. "Kyree, we gotta get the fuck outta town, man, Riley said.
"So, you're really telling me that Kingdom just tried to have you murdered?
"How many times do I gotta say it, Ky! Riley shouted as he stood from the couch.
"Well, if this is true then why the fuck is we here? By now, Kingdom probably has niggas waiting outside for us, man! Kyree barked angrily.
"Naw, Riley started, "nobody knew where I lived but you, Roslyn and my nigga Roach. Like I said, I'm very big on having my own space. But it ain't like niggas can't find out where the fuck my space is at so you're right, we gotta get the fuck up outta here.
"Let me grab Darent, Kyree said, heading back towards the bedroom.
"Yo, where's Roslyn? Riley asked as he gathered some important papers from a drawer in the kitchen.
"Shit! Kyree spat, "I don't know where she's at. I told her ass to stay here this morning but when I woke up she was gone.
"Call her, said Riley, "there's no time to wait here for her. We gotta go pick her up. Riley tossed Kyree a cell phone that he pulled out of the drawer. Kyree held the on button down as he walked into the bedroom to get Darent ready.
"Darent, wake up, man, Kyree said as he shook him to life.
"I¦I don't wanna get up, Darent cried, rubbing his tired eyes.
"Son, this really isn't negotiable right now. Daddy needs for you to get up, okay? Darent continued to wine as Kyree forcefully pulled him up out of bed. "Go get your shoes on, D, and do it fast. We have to go pick up mommy. Kyree dialed Roslyn's cell phone number and waited for an answer.
"Hello? Roslyn answered normally.
"Roslyn! shouted Kyree, "where are you!
"What's wrong, Ky? she asked.
"We don't have time for questions, just tell me where you are?
"I'm just at my mama's house, damn, she replied.
"Didn't I tell you not to leave this fuckin' house? Kyree shot as he gathered up a few of his clothes.
"Kyree, what's going on, baby? Roslyn asked starting to get nervous.
"Just stay at your mother's house, okay? I'm on my way to pick you up. Kyree ended the call and stuffed the cell in his pocket.
"What the hell was that all about? Roslyn asked herself, flipping her cell closed. Roslyn stood from the living room couch to go tell her sleeping mother that she had to leave. That's when she noticed a black van with tinted windows sitting across the street from the living room window. Thinking nothing of it, Roslyn went about her business.
*****
Riley turned onto 54th avenue in a hot Honda Accord and accelerated up to 55 miles per hour. Kyree sat in the passenger seat tapping his foot like a mad man.
"You alright back there, D? Kyree asked, looking in the rear view mirror. Darent didn't respond. He was sound asleep in the backseat.
"Yo, Riley, hurry it up, man, Kyree said impatiently.
"I'm goin' as fast as I can, Ky. We can't risk being stopped by the police. I'm sure Roslyn's fine. Kyree looked out the window and took a deep breath.
"I'm sure you're right. I just gotta bad feeling in my gut, you know?
"You and me both, my nigga, Riley said.
"Yo, Riley, started Kyree, "if I told you that¦I was gonna rob a bank in two days, would you believe me? Riley looked over at Kyree like he was insane.
"No, he answered plainly. Kyree just nodded his head and gazed out the window. Something about the look on Kyree's face was suspicious to Riley. "Kyree, Riley started, "You're not thinking of robbing a bank are you? Kyree looked in the back to make sure that Darent was still sleeping.
"I've been planning it for a while now. I never thought I'd have the guts to actually try it until I became stuck between this rock and this hard place.
"Kyree, what the fuck is you talking about, man? Riley asked as he turned on to Baltimore Street.
"I gotta get my family out of here, man, Kyree shot with serious eyes, "the hood ain't for us.
"Kyree, I will personally kill you myself if you try to rob a bank, Riley said in all seriousness, "niggas don't get away with that shit. There are too many principals involved. Besides, we're leavin' the hood together. I've been doing a lot of thinking about what you've been saying lately. There is life after hustling. When Rocco had that gun pointed directly at me and it didn't go off, that was God telling me that my time wasn't over yet. God has given me a second chance in life, Ky. I believe that he wants me to be something better than what I am. Hell, I want me to be something better than what I am. For years, all I knew was the streets. I want to get out of them, you know? Explore the world. Do something positive with life. So I'ma take this second opportunity that God has given me and run with it, you feel me?
"I feel you, Riley, said Kyree, "but I can't have you paying a nigga's way. I'm my own man and need to make my own cash.
"That's true as fuck, Riley shot, "but I'm not about to have my nigga rob a bank just to have a little cash when I got a little stash of my own. Never that.
"What did I just say, Riley? Kyree retorted, "I promised Roslyn that I'd have us in Cali at the end of the week.
"So what! Riley shouted, disturbing Darent's sleep. "Kyree, you're not robbing a bank, stupid negro. I want to go to Cali too, so we can all go together. Kyree shook his head. Though Riley was one of the grimiest nigga's he knew, he was also one of the most sincere.
"I love you for that, Riley, Kyree said.
"Shit, I'll believe it when you pay back your debt. Kyree laughed and shook the top of Riley's head.
"I love you, nigga!
"Yeah, whatever, Riley sang, "let's just hurry up and cop Roslyn so we can hit the airport.
Chapter 12
-Final Chapter-
Riley pulled the Honda up in front of Roslyn's mother's house and killed the engine.
"See, nigga, said Riley, "I told you everything was alright.
"Yo, Darent, go inside and get your mother, said Kyree. Darent hopped out of the backseat and ran towards the front door.
"Let me ask you somethin', Ky, started Riley.
"Yeah, wassup?
"Is Roslyn good?
"What? Kyree shot. Riley laughed.
"You know¦in bed¦is she good?
"Do I have to beat the black of yo retarded ass? Kyree scowled, "what the fuck kind of question is that?
"I'm sayin, Ky, you got a bad lil' mama. Thick lips, fat ass. A nigga can't help but to wonder what it's like.
"Fuck you, Riley, Kyree said, punching his boy in the arm. "But if you must know¦my shorty got that bomb, son!
"I knew it! Riley shouted. "Just wait until she realizes I'm the better man for her.
"Yeah, right, Kyree said, waiving his ignorant homie off. The front door opened up and Roslyn came out onto the porch.
"Give me a few minutes, alright! she shouted to the car. Kyree cracked his door open so that she could hear him.
"Hurry the hell up! Riley sat looking at Roslyn when a cold chill ran up his spine. He had what was like¦a sixth sense which enabled him to feel when something wasn't right. Being in the streets for practically all of your life would do that to you. He began looking around, both up and down the road and noticed a black van sitting across the street in a neighbor's driveway. Riley had been over Roslyn's house only a couple of times but he never remembered seeing a black van sitting in the driveway across from Roslyn's crib.
"Yo, Kyree, Riley said, nudging his arm, "look. Kyree looked over at Riley who was staring at a black van out of his window. "Have you ever noticed that van parked in that driveway before? Kyree leaned over Riley's body to get a better look.
"Hell naw. An old woman lives there and that most definitely ain't her volts wagon.
"I'll be back in a little while, mom! Roslyn shouted as she and Darent walked out of the front door.
"Bring me back some cigarettes! Janice yelled from her bedroom.
"Oh, mommy, can I go get my toy truck? Darent said right before Roslyn shut the front door behind them.
"Oh, Lord, hurry up, boy. Darent shot back into the house and took off through the living room towards the kitchen. Roslyn shook her head and looked towards the street where Riley and Kyree were parked. That's when she noticed a man dressed in all black creeping up behind Riley's Honda.
"Kyree! shouted Roslyn as she ran towards them. Both Kyree and Riley turned there focus from the van to Roslyn. That's when a blur in the rear view mirror caught Kyree's attention. Kyree looked behind him only to see a figure creep up to Riley's driver side window.
"Riley, duck! Kyree shouted, removing a gun from under his seat. Riley looked to his right just in time so see a gun aimed at his chest. Riley reached for his pistol as the masked man fired two shots into the car. Kyree aimed over Riley's head and squeezed back on the trigger. The masked man grabbed his stomach and dropped into the street. Roslyn dropped to the ground and began crawling back to the front porch with tears of fear in her eyes. Three more men suddenly jumped out of the van across the street. One of the men was equipped with a shotgun, the other two with AK-47's. Kyree's eyes filled with sorrow and anger when he saw the blood seeping through the front of Riley's white t-shirt.
"Riley, no, Kyree mumbled, the tears forming in his eyes.
"Fuck me, Kyree, shoot! Riley shouted as he aimed his gun out of his broken window and popped off. Bullets sailed every which way as Kyree and Riley fired at the three men across the street. Kyree dove out of the car and used it as a shield as he fired over the roof of the Honda.
"Baby, hurry up and get back in the house! Kyree shouted as Roslyn continued to crawl towards the porch.
"Mommy! shouted Darent. Roslyn quickly looked up and saw Darent on the porch with fear written all over his face.
"Baby, get down! Roslyn screamed. Without thinking twice, Roslyn stood up and ran towards Darent. Several shots zipped past Kyree's head as he took cover behind the Honda. Two shots whistled past Darent's head and sparked off of the front door behind him. Roslyn ran up the two steps that led to the cemented front porch and wrapped her arms around Darent. Using her body as a shield, she tried to carry Darent back into the house. That's when a stray bullet whizzed past Kyree and tore into Roslyn's back. Riley was able to drop one of the masked men only to be rewarded with another bullet to the chest. His body jerked back against the seat as he gasped desperately for air. This needs to end Kyree thought to himself, not realizing that Riley had been shot again. There were two men left and they were both approaching the Honda. Keep me safe, Lord Kyree thought to himself as he dove from behind the car and let off his pistol. One of the men dropped immediately as a bullet tore through his torso. With only one man left, Kyree jumped up and fired his gun until the clip was empty. The masked men looked at the blood on his hands before he collapsed to his knees and smacked face first into the middle of the street. Kyree stood on the sidewalk holding his right arm which had taken a bullet. Kyree immediately ran to the Honda and flung open his door to check on his boy. The tears overflowed when he saw Riley's body slumped across the front seat. Riley's dead eyes stared into Kyree's as the blood continued to seep through his shirt. He had taken three shots to the chest.
"Riley, no, Kyree cried as he looked over his best friends slain body. Kyree cried freely for a few minutes. Riley had been by his side for as long as he could remember and now he was gone. The young boy had so much potential and could have done so much more with his life but ended up as just another statistic of the streets. "I'll always be with you, my nigga, Kyree said before he kissed Riley on the forehead and closed his eyes. That's when he heard the screams of Janice coming from behind him. Kyree turned around only to see his lover and his child sprawled out on the front porch.
"NOOO! Kyree shouted, running towards them as fast as he could. Kyree could have swore that he saw Roslyn make it inside with Darent. How could this have happened? How could this be!? Kyree dropped down to his knees beside his boo and his only son. The same hollow point that tore through the back of Roslyn's shoulder came out of her chest and struck little Darent in the heart. He had died instantly. Roslyn was lying as stiff as a board on the cold concrete with most of her right shoulder missing. Surprisingly enough, she was still alive. Her eyes were full of tears as they coldly looked into Kyree's. Kyree couldn't say anything at all. There were so many tears in his eyes that he was completely blinded.
"I love you, Kyree, mumbled Roslyn with tremendous pain in her eyes.
"I¦I love you too, baby. I love you and I love our son so much. Kyree was shaking uncontrollably. He held his hands in Roslyn's and squeezed tightly. Janice fell to her hands and knees crying her heart out. She cried so hard that she began to choke and throw up all over porch area.
"I'm so, so sorry, baby, Kyree cried as he gazed into Roslyn's eyes, "I never meant for any of this to happen. I love you so fucking much. Roslyn wanted to tell Kyree so many things but knew that there wouldn't be any time. For her, it was judgment day and she could only hope that God would accept her.
"I'll see you in heaven, baby, Roslyn whispered, "Never forget about me and your son. Kyree's lover grinned one last time before her grip on his hand became loose and her eyes glazed over.
"No! God, please give me back Roslyn! Kyree cried so loud that his voice squeaked. Janice looked up at Kyree and her anger grew viciously fierce.
"This is all your fucking fault! she snarled at Kyree, spitting at his face. Kyree didn't bother to look at Janice. He kept his eyes closed as he lay on the ground next to his family. "Get away from them! Janice spat. "Get the fuck away! Kyree not bothering to pay Janice any mind only sparked her anger into an incredible rage. The image of her only daughter and grandson lying on the ground dead took the sanity right out of her head. Janice stood up and picked Kyree's gun up off of the ground. Kyree didn't bother to stop Janice from whatever it was she was planning to do. He simply closed his eyes and began to mumble a prayer for his family's souls:
Dear Lord, I know I wasn't the best person in the world and probably won't make it to heaven, but I pray that you accept my girl and my son with open arms. Watch over them, God. Bless them as they dwell in your Kingdom. I'm sorry for the wrong I've done. I was just trying to make it. I was just trying to make it, Lord. I did the things I did to protect my family, and that's it. I'm sure you won't but please except my soul. Realize that I lived in a cruel world and only did what I did to survive. In your name I pray¦
"I hope God damns you to hell, Janice scowled as she aimed the gun at the back of Kyree's head. A police officer came to a screeching stop in front of Janice's house just in time to see her blow a young man's brains out.
******
The next morning, Monte sat smiling as he read the morning newspaper. Though his men had died, he was happy that Kyree, Roslyn, and Riley had all been murdered as planned. Kyree had escaped Monte once, but fate wasn't going to allow it a second time. It wasn't really a must that Roslyn had died, but fuck it, she was the main reason for Maurice's death. Monte tossed the newspaper onto his coffee table and reclined back to smoke a joint. His next move would be to formulate a flawless plot to have Kingdom murdered and eventually work his way up to become the new drug lord of the city.
******
Janice was eventually charged with the murder of Kyree Warner and was sentenced to fifty years in prison. She wouldn't be around to serve her time though. Janice eventually passed away a month after her sentencing from what doctors described as "emotional exhaustion.
End.
