Ode to a Corporal

He didn’t look at peace

    or like he was

    asleep 

He looked very dead

    fetal and small

shot in the head 

Small as if his mortality

    was already being

    ascended away into

Heaven?

Who am I to say?

His baby girl he would no

    more tuck away

    and from his faith he

Never became asunder

Yea though I walk through the

    Valley of the Shadow

    of Death
