"Grandad, what's an office?"
"What was what, sweetheart?"
"What's an office, Grandad?"
"Well, love, it's a place where people go to work."
"What sort of a place?"
" It's like a big room in a building, and people sit behind desks and
talk on the telephone."
"What do they do that for?"
"Um, well, they do that for their job."
"Is that what Daddy does in his job? Does he sit in a big room and talk
on the tellyphone all day?"
"Er, yes, love, I suppose he does do that quite a lot. But he does
other things as well."
"What other fings, Grandad? What other fings does Daddy do for his
job?"
"Um, lots of things. He has meetings and?.
"Who does he meet, Grandad? Does he meet the Electricity man? Does he
meet the postman?"
"No, he doesn't meet those people. They have different jobs. He meets
people, um, who work in offices, like he does."
"Does he meet Mrs Higgins from church?"
"No, I don't think he would meet Mrs Higgins. She doesn't work in an
office. She doesn't have a job any more."
"So she's stopped working in the office now, Grandad?"
"No, sweetheart, she's never worked in an office. What makes you think
that, love?"
"I heard Mummy tell Daddy that Mrs Higgins finks she knows it all and
she can stick her ideas up that office where the sun don't shine. Is
Daddy's office sunshiney, Grandad?"
