Death In The Cabinet
By
Wormcharmer
The Prime minister lay still in his bed with blue lips and round,
bulging eyes. Rigor mortis has set into his muscles. One of the maids
walked in, dropped the tray that she was carrying and screamed. Within
a few minutes everyone had rushed in to see what the noise was about.
The house at Chequers had never seen murder before. Everyone appeared
shocked, especially Mrs Carding, the Prime minister's wife, and Mark,
his son. After a long silence the butler chirped up,
"I suppose that we had better call the police then", and went off to do
it.
We all followed him out except for Angellina Carding and her son who
stayed behind watching her dead husband and crying silently with tears
running down her face.
A while later Inspector Arosmith arrived from the police station. First
he interviewed the Prime minister's family. To begin with I couldn't
speak, but, once I started I soon told him all I knew. After the
interview I decided to ask the Inspector what he thought of the
case.
"Er?.good morning?.er, Mr?"
"Mr Arosmith", answered the Inspector.
"Yes, good morning, I was wondering what you thought of the er? case."
I asked.
"Well I'm positive that the PM was poisoned. Could you ask everyone to
meet me in the library at once?"
"Yes Inspector", I said, and hurried off.
A little later we were all assembled in the library. Passing round
glasses of wine to everyone poured from an identical bottle of wine
found next to the dead PM the Inspector began by proposing a toast to
the deceased. As we all took a sip from our glasses Inspector Arosmith
suddenly shouted out to Mrs Carding and Mark,
"You haven't touched your drinks! You thought that they were poured
from the same bottle which you had used to murder your husband and
father! Don't worry the rest of you, it is not the same bottle, just
one very like it."
Angelina Carding and her son, both broke down, confessed and were led
away to the police station.
I went up to the Inspector again.
"How did you guess from the start", I asked.
"I knew that he was poisoned and that it was the wine, so all I needed
to find out was who had done it."
"But why would his family want to murder him?", I asked.
"Wouldn't you if you had to live with our Prime Minister all the
time!!" he replied.
