The Song My Mother Sang
The song my mother sang to me
had neither notes nor rhymes,
but reason filled she whispered it
more than a million times.
It spoke of joy and faith and prayer,
of cabbages and kings,
of futures filled with peace and hope,
of many other things.
She sang it soft, she sang it low,
she shouted it out loud.
She made me hear the song she sang,
I'd like to hear it now.
Her wisdom spanned a thousand years,
her heart was open wide,
and every time she sang her song
I felt it deep inside.
My mother sang her song to me,
her song of fear and pain,
while holding tight to what she knew,
she softly called my name.
Now looking back I realize,
that deep within her heart,
she wanted what was best for me,
what best she could impart.
She sang it soft, she sang it low,
she shouted it you see;
because it was her song of life
my mother sang to me!
