Waiting
Eddie sat in the back of his car.
Two miles away his girl would be waiting for him. She didn't know that
yet.
He had spent a considerable amount of time ensuring that.
His hand fingered the heart-shaped box that dangled from the ignition
key.
He thought about what he was going to do and unwrapped another stick of
Doublemint.
He checked his water-proof watch and started the car. On the radio The
Everley Brothers were singing 'Bye Bye Love' as he pulled out of the
parking lot.
He looked to his left, and his hand shook slightly. He saw the town
clock and cursed; his water-proof watch was two minutes fast. He pulled
into a nearby bus-lane and corrected the problem with his water-proof
watch. He indicated to pull out and waited patiently until a truck had
passed him, then rejoined the road again.
A while had gone by until he noticed that he had ran out of
chewing-gum. He pulled into a Shell petrol station just as Jimi Hendrix
was finishing 'Hey Joe'.
He exited the car, retied his left shoelace, and walked into the
shop.
He moved past the magazine rack towards the counter where the
chewing-gum was kept.
The sales assistant was having trouble with the man in front of him, as
he seemed to have left his wallet in his car. He apologised and
indicated that Eddie should go before him.
Eddie thanked the man and took three packs of Doublemint from the
shelf. He payed the sales assistant, got into his car, and drove away
again.
He was getting closer now, so keeping one eye on the road; he reached
into the dashboard and pulled out a pair of gloves.
He drove for some time and eventually pulled up near a phone box
oppersite a building site.
The Who were singing 'My Generation' as he exited the car and crossed
the road.
Checking that no-one was watching; He found what he was looking for and
returned to the car.
He hummed along to 'American Pie' as he drove the rest of the way to
his girl's house.
Pulling up to her house he briefly thought of what might have been. He
exited the car as Alice Cooper sang about 'Poison'.
Pushing her bell he glanced down at his mud-splatted jeans, and
wondered if he would ever get them clean again.
She eventually answered the door and stood still for a moment as though
slightly surprised.
He pushed her through the door, slammed her against the wall, and hit
her over the head with a brick.
She slumped to the floor still looking slightly quizzical. Eddie stayed
silent and hit her repeatedly until the brick was broken.
To his surprise she was still twitching, so he dragged her through the
hall to the kitchen; opened the cutlery drawer, and stuck a bread knife
through her eye.
When she had eventually stopped moving, he phoned the police and walked
in the lounge.
He switched the television on and waited.
