Safe and Sound

When was the last time you felt safe? Do you remember? When was the last time you didn't feel so restless? So out of breath? So scared of everything and everyone? Can you tell how long it has been since you last slept the whole night through? Without waking up with cold sweat, shaking after another awful nightmare? Without hearing the screams in your head? The cries? Without seeing the blood and the helplessness of those surrounding you? Without smelling death?
Where is the simplicity? The triviality of day-to-day life? That routine you used to hate so much? Where did they all go to? This is not what you signed up for. This is not what you had dreamt about when you pictured the future, your life, the world, adulthood. How could this reality be the truth of our petty existence? Of our guest-for-a-moment existence?
We take so much pride in our modern medicine; in our state-of-the-art technology. We are top of the food chain. We build buildings that define gravitational laws; we find new ways to cure incurable diseases; we fly in the skies with mechanic birds; we can create life both naturally and artificially. Yet with all those magnificent achievements we value so much; with all that sense of superiority we possess, when it comes to simply living our lives, we fail miserably. Because nowadays, more than ever, no one has time. We are always so busy; so diverted by an endless chatter of stimulations; of constant noise somewhere in the background. We struggle so hard to survive in this insanely violent world, there's just no time to sit back, relax, and live our lives.
When did you stop believing in destiny? When did you stop believing that all human beings are good at their core? Where can you find that comforting feeling a warm blanket on a cold rainy night induces? Where can you find those hugs, promising you that it will all be alright? Why are you so indifferent to the great forces of nature? To the blossoms of spring? To a new life entering the world? Why do you feel so empty of yourself? So useless? Why can't you stop running, even though you know it's only a matter of time the ground under your feet will vanish? Why is that bridge, hanging over the abyss below, so loose? Why can't it lead you to the other side of the cliff? Why can't it lead you to safety? Why do you have to eventually fall, like the rest of them do?
*I dedicate this story to those who had been scarred forever by terrorism.
