THE SIXTIES GIRLS
Beehive hairstyles, stiletto shoes,
Daring train robbers in the news,
The Beatles in their trendy suits,
Screaming fans and high-heeled boots.
Arriving home at twelve was late,
Mums and dads were in a state,
We'd been jiving, twisting, shaking,
Thought the rules were meant for breaking.
The local dance hall was a must,
Couldn't see us girls for dust,
We had partners by the score,
Now, how could we ask for more?
By day we'd work, by night we'd play,
Keeping all the lads at bay,
We were picky, we were choosy,
Not one of us they'd call a floozy.
We'd stumble home with aching feet,
From keeping rhythm to the beat,
So what happened to the girls
Whose life was fun and full of whirls?
We had laughs, giggles a plenty,
Then came the day when we hit twenty,
We'd had our turn out on the town,
Now we ought to settle down.
We were married one by one,
Two in rain and two in sun,
Our hands were sore from washing nappies,
Cleaning and cooking for our chappies.
The swinging sixties, we were there,
Mascarared eyes and back combed hair
Now we've all reached fifty three,
Jenny, Penny, Sue and me.
Who would ever guess us four?
Once the belles of the dance floor,
Would ever age, become quite frumpy,
Slender figures turning dumpy.
We don't care, no, we don't mind,
Because for all we've left behind,
We four hold happiness in our hand,
All mums and grans will understand
