Road to Nowhere

Road to Nowhere
I never got to hold your hand,
kiss your sweet lips
or feel the warmth of your skin
as it was never meant to be.
Yet through my state of deep emotions
and turmoil past you kept the story unfolding.
Until you vanished on the breeze
leaving me standing alone
stripping away all I had built you up to be.
See that fresh mound on top of the hill
where the largest maple tree sits
and the road leads to nowhere,
where the image of the lovers appear
every Mid Summers Eve,
she lays her head upon his shoulder
as he read words of what she needs to hear,
just the same as our own plans,
that is where I buried you.
"What did you just say?"
"You are not dead."
Not your body did I bury
but my own heart and soul
a forged key of gold,
with a bundle of memories
tied together with lies.
The key you gave me
never did fit your heart.
The memories I have seem so distant
for the path I trod to your door
is now full of stinging plants
and poisonous weeds.
The magic carpet ride
won't take me to the desert,
no one can look at us
for there is nothing left to touch.
Gifts of love never were given,
the ultimate kiss never exchanged,
two souls never to merge as one
and make the angels sing
as it was never meant to be.
