Hypothesis
In open chain exercises Non Euclidian action around gross parameters has little or no carryover to function (in plain English you must use the right tools for the job). There for gravitation and central balance must always be expressed (muscle force action is always a tangent of primary sensory function which must be integrated in a positive manner, taking into account gross and fine motor skill and rate of skills acquisition ). Muscles and the central nervous system and related neo cortex and are all primarily sense organs which gathers data for pattern recognition and determinate status.
Overview
Brain and movement cannot be separated out this is Descartes thinking (dealing with the mind body problem 17 century thinking) and is not applicable to action (it’s a mechanical world view). Exercises can be either open or closed chain. Historically most sports are open chain (using the whole body) whist from the 1940s onwards most gym based exercises have been closed chain (splitting the body into parts). In physio treatment both modalities are applied. In the sporting world also both modalities are used, Closed chain exercises are easy to learn , but so are simple open chain exercises , the difference then truly lies in which has more functional carryover to both sports and tasks of daily living and the answer is clearly open chain exercises. The problem with the teaching off open chain exercises in a health club setting is that often function instability is introduced to soon often in an extrinsic manner ill suited to the individual and their unique needs. Physiology is only one factor and more often psychology and emotion play more of a key role in exercise selection than applied physiology.
Some facts which most always be applied to programming
1) Gross motor skills are easier to learn than fine motor skills, but fine motor skill develop grace under pressure and so are key to muscle reception , both can and must be trained
2) Mind and body create unity of action , therefore intentionality is key to both form and function, distraction switches of the neo cortex(never a good thing except in zazen meditation were it is bliss creating an alpha timeless brain state which recharges the central nervous system)
