The old man
Had Kept Chickens
Two cocks
Eight hens
The hens made
4 eggs a day
He had scrambled eggs most mornings
The feeling that he was a farmer
Was something never far from his mind
He had left his home country to come here
As a student
He wanted to one day own his own farm
But now
He just owned Cocks and Hens
And a cat
And a mangy dog
He thought of his wife
Now dead
At least his two sons
Were doing well
He was on the scrapheap
Biding time before his death
How it would come he did not know
But come it surely would
Would he see his sons' grandchildren?
He did not know
He would just try and take care of himself
His Dog, his Cat
His hens
And his Cocks.
