me

I am a boy much like every other on this planet today, I do stupid things, I have a low attention span and I find falling funny. Girls frighten me and the very mention of homework sends shivers down my spine. Like other males, I wanted to be a solider, a doctor, a police officer, a fireman. But with age these childish fantasies fall away and are replaced by more 'mature' more 'applicable' professions. This is where I stray from the pack, I want to be a hero, I want to save the day, I want to be bathed in glory, I want to be great. Unlike people my age I am unsure of what I want to do when I'm older, the only thing I am certain of is the fact I want to be great, I want to be fundamental to the evolution of the twenty first century. This may be a childish dream but it is my driving force, its' what set me on a course to a Rhodes education. I love animals, I'm good at writing, I like movies and most importantly I love to escape into my own imagination. To go to a world of my own creation where everything is as it should be and nothing is out of place. Where flying komodo dragons are the norm and every second person is named Ricky. I believe it’s these attributes that make me an aspiring writer, more importantly an aspiring journalist. My talents may not hint at a career of journalism but I believe it’s my calling, to write about what I love, whether it be video games, movies or extreme sport. To be able to highlight the travesties in nature and bring about change through my writing. I don’t know where I am going because unlike my dreams, I can’t fly and I can’t see the future but I am certain of one thing, a journalism degree at Rhodes opens doors and teaches skills that are applicable in widely differing careers. In three to five years’ time I would like to have a degree in my hands that puts into ink what I have always believed to be true, that I am bright, that I can succeed, that I have a future. My goals for the duration of my university adventure are to meet new people, try new things and open my mind to the wonders of the world. It would be a bonus if I managed to acquire the elusive skill of talking to girls. One thing that university has showed me is that it’s in the awkward situations that you learn the most, the times when you feel like turning inside that you learn what you made of. If there’s anything that I want to know more it’s what I am made of, sure I could hit my head against a wall and find my pain threshold but it’s not that that interests, I want to know how strong my psychological resolve is, I want to know how far I can push myself emotionally. To understand who I am and where I am going is the greatest gift the next five years could give me. So while I open my mind to the wonders of the world and learn new and exciting things through the literature that I'm bound to read, hopefully I can expand everything else about me and become a whole person, lacking nothing, and with ample context to understand even the most mind boggling of situations.
