The captain and the crew said goodbye to you ,
and left you standing there alone at the quay

The potato crop had failed so to America we sailed
as our heads all toured away to the sea  .

The leaving is so hard and the grieving cannot guard

the courage that a thought can take away

Though we’re far apart you will always be in my heart

and my thoughts of you will often kindly stray

Upon a stark cobalt, my tears tasted just like salt,
as I thought about the last thing that we said

As we stood there by the quay , you smiled and said to me
will you remember me kindly when I’m  dead .

and my thoughts of you will often kindly stray

Though life unkindly dealt the emotions that I felt,
hung like dark clouds waiting for the sun,
but if you could kindly wait ma while until I find a smile
maybe then I will forget the damage done  .
