Who's your audience, Ice?
I'm glad I asked.
Let's start with you, the current reader. You're here so far and I'm glad you're here. I don't know how you got here but that's kinda immaterial. The fact is that you are here now so this one is for you. I hope to keep you here right up to the end which will be roughly 500 words from now. I may or may not know you. You may or may not have been part of my previous audience. Maybe this is the first time that we've ever met but I doubt that. Pretty sure you might be one of the two dozen who show up here with some regularity to see what I'm up to next or the hudreds who have bought my books; the fullfilled seeking to fill fuller.
If you're here for the first time then welcome as you are part of my unintended audience. I don't know you yet because if I did, you would move into my intended audience. If you let me know who you are, I'll add you to my intended group. I will keep you somewhere in my mind when it's time to compose. Each time that I re-read, I'll read as if we're reading together.
Then there's my intended audience which you may be already part of or on the way to becoming. My intended audience automatically manifests itself in my creative focus, every time that I begin to write in the way that I'm writing right now. I might even be writing about you. If there's a joke imbedded somewhere within my words, I'm sure that you're going to catch it. You're also the one who can transform my writing from cryptic to crystal clear because "ya nome sayn" and ya "get" me. You're probably nodding right now. I'm winking righ backatcha.
Then of course there is the universal audience, the millions of people who might be reading this right now or might have read something of mine in the past or will read something of mine in the future but most likely don't know who the hell I am or what I'm trying to accomplish. I know you're out there but I'm not aiming at you. Perhaps, you'll stumble in and become part of the unintended audience but most likely you will never see any of these words nor will you be aware of their very existence. The only way the universal audience becomes activated is through a mysterious spark which activates the fuel and turns on the motor.
The biggest disappointment occurs when the intended audience doesn't read any of these words. I have one member of my intended audience who has read a few scratchings and has himself been "disappointed" wit them. Although it hurts a little bit, I prefer that reaction over no reaction at all.
My audience is hip, cool, smart, kind, handsome, enthusiatic, selective, articulate, imaginative, flexible and supportive, just like you yeah and that's why we're here in the first place.
I know that I'm gonna see some of you again next time this particular light goes on in this particular lighthouse.
Whaddya think about all that?
