[Continuing the hymn-for-Sundays series]
He walked with God upon this earth,
his King-Companion with him,
his Maker-Friend whose will he loved –
delighting in obeying.
Not as with a ‘theophany’ –
not God as man or angel:
communing, sharing thoughtfully,
comforted by His counsel.
And then, one day, he was not there –
God took him up to heaven,
his place of residence thus changed
– no change of close Companion.
… and he was not, for God took him. Genesis 5:24
Tune: 87 87 iambic eg ‘Dominus regit me’ by John Dykes, tune of ‘The King of love my Shepherd is’ by Henry Baker
