plea to a poet

think deeply of the terror, man's strife
think long on the meaning of life.
point out the suffering, humility or pain
but remember to show us we can live again.
poet, whoever you are,
guide us to your gleaming star,
and let us look upon its face
so that we can compete in life's ugly race
with one spark more of humanity,
with a firmer grip on our sanity;
with an insight into our souls.
though we may have conflicting goals,
guide us through your words of wonder
poet, do not tear us asunder!
