THE SCARECROW
Standing with his eyeless head looking down the rows of baby peas
The peas as attractive to the pigeons as a piece of bread
Sitting waiting watchful from the distant trees
Poor scarecrow in the cold spring winds blowing through his vest
Waiting until the peas are full two feet high
They may go to Birds-Eye if they are the best
Growing steadily amidst bits of rye
Eventually when his work is done for another year
He will be taken down and thrown in the barn
His jacket now has another tear
If he is lucky he may get a darn
If unlucky in the barn the mice will nibble at his clothes
He really needs a new shirt and coat
So that next year he won't look scruffy on the rows
Surely he doesn't want to look as if he has been half eaten by a
goat
