Pray for Rain

When you look out and see the grass
has burnt up to an orange-tan crisp,
you look to the sky and
pray for rain.
When you look out and see anger
in the face of the farmer as he looks over
his crops in the mid-day sun&;#8230;you
pray for rain.
When the soil under your feet
swirls into miniature dirt devils
that won't hold root nor seed,
pray for rain.
When you look into your circle
silent and void of voices,
laughter and the cry of a child-
pray for rain
I look up into your brown eyes
longing for a long, strong storm
of nourishing moisture, I clench my muscles and
pray for rain.
Laying there drenched, after the rain,
legs clenched tightly closed
against the flood, I
pray for rain
to get the job done.
