I done it the next day. Gerry was called into work early at seven in the morning. I got up an hour later and packed the kids off to school. When I made sure they were completely gone, I went back up to my bedroom and packed a couple of suitcases. Then I put them by the front door, ready to tell Gerry as soon as he got in.
He didn't get in til twelve, by which time I was getting agitated. I'd already texted May to tell her I was coming over a couple of hours ago.
When Gerry got in, I was expecting him to see the suitcases and deand to know what was going on. I was in the kitchen at the time, and I could hear him on the phone.
"Yes, yes, Tom! I'll tell Sarah and the kids tonight. The kids might take it badly, but Sarah won't, we've been having to many arguements lately. Oh, Tom, I want us to be together forever!"
I choked on my coffee. What! What the fuck was he talking about! From what I could gather, my husband was having an affair, and now he's leaving me for the another person. The fact that it was another man made me feel sick. How could he do this to me? Didn't he love me?
Gerry had hung up by the time he got to the kitchen. He looked startled to see me.
"Sarah! Darling" What are you doing home?"
"Took the day off work," I said bluntly.
"You - You didn't hear what I was saying on the phone, did you?"
"Yes, Gerry. Yes, I did. You're leaving me for some bloke called Tom."
Gerry looked grief-stricken.
"Oh, Sarah! Is that what you believe?"
"Don't play the innocent with me. Well, I have some news for you. I've been having an affair as well!"
Gerry looked gobsmacked. "Who?" He asked, bleakly. "You don't have any mates, not really. Apart from..." Then he stopped, as if he realized something. "It's May, isn't it? You've been having an affair with May!"
"Yes." I stood up. "Did you notice the suitcases by the front door? That means I love May more than I love you. And I'm going to leave you, and move in with May."
I left the kitchen and headed for the front door. I heard Gerry running up behind me. "Wait, Sarah! We can talk about this!"
"What's there to talk about?" I turned to look at him. "You've been having an affair with another man, and you want to leave me for him. I love May more than I love you, and I'm leaving you to go live her."
I picked up my suitcases and headed out to the car.
"But what about the kids?"
"What about them? I was always looking after them. You only ever looked after when it suited you. Now, it's your turn."
Gerry shouted a whole load of other things at me, but I didn't hear him; by this time, I was already in the car, and driving to May's.
She looked surprised to see me when she answered her door.
"Sarah, I was expecting you two hours ago." Then her eyes fell on the suitcases. "Is that what I think it is?"
"Yes. I've left Gerry."
May's eyes sparkled. "Oh, Sarah, that's great news. Come on in, we need to sort out a place for you."
"But, I've left him. For you."
"I know. I meant a place here, of course. So, how did Gerry take it?"
"Oh, he wasn't happy. But I beat him to it."
"What do you mean, beat him to it?"
"I found out he'd been having an affair with someone behind my back."
"The swine! Did you find out who?"
"Yes. Another bloke. Called Tom."
"What? Another bloke? Oh, how terrible for you."
"Yes."
We couldn't think of anything to say for a few minutes, then May clapped her hands. "Well, then, I think we need to sort out your sleeping place. There's a spare room upstairs, next to Lauren's room. You can stay there. We can't have Lauren knowing about us."
"Of course not," I said. "She wouldn't like it."
"What about your kids."
"Wel, now I've run out on Gerry, He's got no choice but to look after them."
"Oh. Right. Let's take your things upstairs." May grabbed one suitcase, I grabbed the other, and we both went upstairs...
Meanwhile...
I watched Sarah leave in her car. I went back inside, still in a daze. After a few days of planning to leave her, and she beat me to it! How long had she been knocking about with May? The whole time they'd known each other? Or was it a recent thing, like Sarah looked at May one day, and realized, 'she's the one for me?'
I was really mad about it. How dare she humiliate me! I was supposed to leave her! She found out I was having the affair first. What was I going to do now? She'd insisted I'd take care of the kids, well, that was certainly never going to happen.
The kids got home from school at the same time, which was a rare occurence for them. At thew time, I was lounging on the seetee, watching TV, when they came bursting in.
"Hi, Dad!" They both yelled out, before leaving again.
"Mum? Mum" We're home!"
Larry and Lisa came hurtling back in. "Dad? Where's Mum?" Larry asked.
"She's gone out for a bit," I answered. "She'll be back later."
"Where's she gone?" Lisa now came in the room. "When will she be back?"
"I dohn't know whee she's gone. And I don't know when she'll be back." Suddenly, the presence of the kids started to piss me off. It wasn't them I wanted to keep me company. It was Tom.
"Dad? What's for dinner? I'm starving."
"I don't know, go look in the freezer."
Larry came back with a pizza. I sighed. Cooking for a long amount of time. Joy!
After I cooked the pizza, and shared it between the three of us. We all sat down to watch TV together. I was starting to get moire and more hacked off. At one point, I did think of just walking out the front door, and leaving the kids to get on with it, but I didn't. I stuck it out.
I rang Tom on his mobile, but it went straight to voicemail. I left a message on his phone to tell him I wasn't goling to leave Sarah after all.
"Dad? Wewren't you listening?" Lisa whined.
"Hmm? Sorry, what? I wasn't listening."
"Oh, Dad! All I said was that my mate Bianca, she's got a new mouse. She called it Ricky. Isn't that silly? I said she should call it Mickey, do you know why? Because thee's this Disney mouse, right? And he's called Mickey. Mickey Mouse. Have you heard of Mickey Mouse, Dad? Have you?"
"Yes, dear." 'Shut up!' I screamed inside my head.
"Oh look" Tracy Beaker's on!" Lisa suddenly squaled. I sighed and had to endure a half hour of children's crap. Tracy Beaker was a silly programme about a young girl who lives in a Childrens' Home. From what I could gather, she was a silly girl with frizzy hair who lied and shouted a lot. And there was this naff animation crap involved as well.
And that was it! That was when I got my brilliant idea!
