Four (Stooges) Is a Crowd by J.B. Pravda
The critics were all in agreement------Moe, Larry, Curly had balance,
rhythm, but, now, the producers had gone too far. The newest member,
added for an aging audience, was meant to somehow argue for reasoned
by-play as opposed to the sometimes brutal and otherwise exhaustingly
disturbing violent slapstick.
But the studio had enlisted increasingly influential psychologists who,
it was thought, would act as governors of propriety and good conduct in
the now adolescent audience viewing the Stooges in their
pubescence.
And, so, when Reggie---as in regulator-----was added to the cast, the
veteran stooges reacted with uncertainty; before long, their
performances were judged tentative at best, with Larry, the usually
battered member, with or without cause, given to bouts of depression on
the set.
The director, equally frustrated, knew what had to be done: during the
next day's shooting of " Curly Cue", the director gave the signal and
the three regulars descended upon Reggie with eyepokes, slaps and
general mayhem------the boys were back, the audiences were thrilled and
Reggie was dead, leading to manslaughter charges against the much-loved
actors, later acquitted of all counts; it seemed that Reggie sported a
short thick mustache, reminiscent of Hitler; in subsequent bits, a
psychologist was featured, cautioning peaceful resolutions, always
topped with the three united against the shrink.
