Super-String Theory by J.B. Pravda
Vladimir, the royal Court puppeteer, was in a rage, his service to the
Czar's family having been faithful and long; on this, his 25th year as
said puppeteer, his was a reward found lacking. A Russian Doll was his,
no grant of land, no happy cottage near the Black Sea! His ire could
scarcely be contained and he determined, like his older adventuresome
cousin Meesha, of whom he had heard, that he would seek his fortune in
America, when the next ship did sail. The day had come, and he was
careful not to betray his plan to anyone, not even his fellows in the
customary hide where his trade he plied. Bags packed, his day of
leisure was to be his last in the service of the ungrateful monarch.
Waiting until the royals had taken their daily air, he made for the
rail station, passage in hand. As he boarded the train, he felt a tug;
turning to see who had found him out----he had been so
careful!----there was no one in sight, not a soul, save the string
which pulled him out of the rail
carriage&;#8230;&;#8230;&;#8230;&;#8230;.and back, through
the snow, to his 'place' in the surly hand which guided his steps, now,
ever so life-like, it did seem, back to his hamper,
&;#8230;&;#8230;&;#8230;&;#8230;.. awaiting his next
'performance'.
