Lost

I don't know what you hide,
Or what battles you have fought.
But there is a side to your character
That you keep under lock and key and
I don't understand why.

You suddenly close down when I talk to you,
When I alight upon an undiscovered subject,
And I can almost touch the barrier
That keeps me from reaching you and
I don't understand why.

I'm lost in a fog of doubt,
I don't know where you are,
And I know it isn't any of my business to
Intrude, but I've known you for years and
I don't understand why.

You pretend everything is fine,
And perhaps you are oblivious to it by now,
But it seems at times that you are as lost as I.
I would lead you to safety, but you shut me down and
I don't understand why.

So, maybe, we'll carry on like this forever,
And I won't say what I really mean because
I know that it could hurt you.
But, still,
I don't understand why.
