Chapter 4, Deep Trouble
That night Ruby and Ariala walked for four hours non stop. The air was
cold, and Ruby's arms and legs shivered, and her teeth chattered. They
took refuge under a nearby tree, and fell asleep.
Dawn broke, and it was soon clear that Ruby was dreadfully ill. 'I
feel really hot, I can't stop sweating!' said Ruby. Ariala was worried
out of her wits. Nobody in the group had ever been ill, as such. Cy had
had a splitting headache often enough, Nathan a cold, Ariala the
chickenpocks, but not one of them had been really ill.
Ariala felt Ruby's head. It was very hot. An awful thought passed
Ariala's mind. Ruby had a fever. The thought did not go away, but stuck
until it burned a hole through everything Ariala had taught Ruby, and
everything Slink stood for.
'I'm going to get help,' Ariala said to Ruby, and she ran to a phone
box. Ruby passed out. The ambulance came, and by then Ariala was
fighting her feelings.
Her feelings said that she was terrified and should never have phoned
the ambulance. They told her to run as fast as she could. But another
thought said that Ruby would not have lived if she had not made the
phone call. And anyway, it was about time she gave herself up. She
couldn't carry on running.
When the police arrived, she let herself be carried away. She told
them she'd had enough. Five years of robberies and vandalism, and
running away from home. She couldn't take it anymore. And sadly,
neither could Ruby. Ruby died.
