To All The Iraqi Vets Who Are Mad At Me

I always ask them the same question, "Why did you go to war?"
It seems to offend them, like I should already know
Somehow I'm challenging their very core
and going somewhere I shouldn't go.
I delve into death and violence
For a chance to understand
Covered in masks of silence
Why they travelled to that distant land.
But I refuse to be stopped in my quest
Because don't you see
Bound into an eternal rest
Somehow those soldiers died for me.
For my right to question and state
While their families mourn
I'm not sure they deserved their fate
And it leaves me so torn.
Thank you for giving so much for me
But I'm not sure if you understand
Those foreign peoples right to be free
Involves much more than what flows under their land.
