Desert Night

It's a long, long road through the thristy land,
swirling over tarmac and endless sand,
winding and twisting around sharp sudden turns,
struggling through dust-storms and sunshine that burns,
aching for water and a cool place to rest,
running from those who think they know best,
wondering where you're next going to sleep,
safe from the nightmares and shadows that creep,
squinting through harsh light with stinging eyes,
the reflection before you shrivels and dies,
the oasis of life that shimmers so near,
can wither to sand and all but disappear,
your hopes and your dreams wilt under the sun,
from what will I do to what have I done,
skin under magnified, intensified pain,
hoping and praying you'll see it again,
everyday things are all but forgot,
focused on sweating and your mind that feels hot,
the harsh, scorching sand is tormenting your feet,
while sun-creatures run and flee from the heat,
blinking your eyes, the tears nearly imitate rain,
your hot tortured mind hoping to see night again,
but when you think that your troubles are old,
just as the light is hot, the darkness is cold,
creeping around you till you want the sun back,
the icy wind penetrates like a thumb-tack,
piercing your skin and your ears with it's cries,
piercing your mind with it's millions of eyes,
alone in the dark, you curl up to the fire,
shaking and shivering till you perspire,
although you may be glad now to be rid of the light,
how do you know that you'll survive the night?
