Embers of Obligation

Kindling phrases to the fire of our friendship
Quick, it flickered then surely fanned the wind
Upon the plains that form our common ground
Shaped upon the current of the air
And as we burned, the rest stood back
Mere satellites, cold planets to the sun we had become
But blinded by the brightness of our flames
We couldn't see their ice cold stares
Warmed by the heat of our bright flames
We couldn't feel their ice cold stares
One day came winter, friendship was on trial
But we had lost all our hot sick intent
To promise us to no one but ourselves
And Silence whispered lies to our demise
For though we knew each other and our pasts
Our fire had no fuel to make us last
All that's left's the embers to oblige
Us to stay stagnating by each other's side
I stand alone and watch the ashes glow
Awaiting my coup-de-grace by letter or telephone
